Asia/Pacific and Latin America Region Software Sales Reach $214 Million for
Q2 1994

Sales Growing Three Times Faster Than In North America and Western Europe

September 26, 1994 (Washington DC) - The Software Publishers Association
(SPA) announced today that sales of personal computer application software
reached $214 million in the Asia/Pacific and Latin America regions in the
second quarter of 1994. Sales increased 46% from the second quarter of
1993. For the first half of 1994, sales were $428 million, an increase of
47% from the first half of 1993. Unit sales increased 91%% for the
quarter, and 102% for the half.

"It is easy to see why the US software industry is pressing for better
intellectual property protection in the Asia/Pacific and Latin American
regions," said David Tremblay, SPA's Research Director. "US companies'
sales in these regions have been growing at three or more times the rates
seen in North America and Western Europe. The industry has achieved this
growth in spite of piracy rates ranging from 50% to over 90% in these
regions. Relative to other industrialized areas of the world, Asia/Pacific
and Latin America personal computer markets are less developed and less
penetrated. These regions have tremendous future potential for the
software industry - but we need to address their software piracy problems
there before the potential can be fully realized."

Asia/Pacific Region Fastest Growing

Overall sales in the Asia/Pacific region were $177 million for the second
quarter of 1994, a 47% increase from the second quarter of 1993. For the
first half of 1994, sales were $366 million, a 49% increase from the first
half of 1993.

Japan, with sales of $105 million for the second quarter (up 52%) and $233
million for the first half of 1994 (up 71%), was the largest market for US
software firms outside North America and Western Europe. For the second
quarter, US companies' sales in Japan increased on strong gains in the
sales of Windows and Macintosh application, up 85% and 78%, respectively.
Sales of DOS applications were off 8% compared to the second quarter of
1993.

Sales in Australia and New Zealand were $47 million for the quarter, a 20%
increase from the second quarter of 1993. For the first half, sales in the
region were $82 million, a 17% increase. These increases were on par with
North America and total Western Europe increases for the period.

Latin America Growing, but Still a Small Market

While still fairly small in absolute size, sales growth in Latin America in
the quarter was solid. Sales were $35 million (up 41%) for the second
quarter and $62 million (up 32%) for the first half. Brazil led this
region, with sales up 183% for the second quarter and 92% for the year.
Sales results in Mexico were less spectacular: off 6% for the quarter, but
up 5% for the half. Sales growth in other Latin American regions were
solid: Up 85% for the quarter and 76% for the half.

Sales data reported are from the SPA's International DataProgram, and
represent total revenues in these regions of the 39 primarily US-based
software firms participating in the SPA's International Data Program. The
companies submit their confidential sales data to the accounting firm of
Arthur Andersen, which prepares the report for the SPA. Among the
participants are Aldus, Borland, Claris, Lotus, Microsoft, Software
Publishing, Symantec, and WordPerfect. While US companies have the
dominant market share in most of these regions, the figures reported
should not be taken as an estimate of the total market size. Rather, they
represent total sales of the reporting companies.
