Spec Integrates DSP Into Windows

Aimed at 32-bit Windows platforms, such as the forth-coming Windows95,
Microsoft has released a DSP software architecture and Resource Manager
Interface (RMI) specification. The RMI offers a mechanism for managing
signal-processing resources, such as those found in digital-signal
processors (DSP's). It's a three-layered architecture that provides
device-independent resource management while simulateously preserving
DSP-specific capabilities.

The top-level interface is sued by Windows device drivers to interconnect
tasks and resources to perform functions on DSP-based platforms. The
middle layer organizes the tasks and resources in a multitasking
environment, including concurrency issues and resource conflicts. The
bottom layer implements the physical connection to the DSP platform.

The specification is being endorsed by a host of major computer-component
suppliers, including AT&T Microelectronics, Creative Technology, IBM,
Intel, and Spectron Microsystems. The Resource Manager supplies a common
interface for DSP architectures, enabling driver and application
developers to bridge their development investment from one product
generation to the next. A copy of the specification can be obtained by
sending electronic mail to MSDSP@Microsoft.com, or by accessing the
Windows Extensions Forum on CompuServe (type GO WINEXT), library 15,
DSPRMI.
