PowerBASIC Does Windows

CARMEL, Calif. ---- PowerBASIC, Inc. announced the initial retail shipments
of its PowerBASIC Developer Kit for Windows (PBDK). Now, developers can
move DOS programs to Windows quickly and easily, since they're no longer
forced to jump headlong into event-driven programming. With PBDK, they're
given a choice: procedural programming, event-driven methods, or even a
combination of the two. Coupled with the fast execution speed of native
machine code, PBDK seems certain to gain wide acceptance.

The PBDK offers new features not found in other development tools for
Windows. For compatibility with existing code, programmers can link
industry standard object modules (OBJ), as well as newer dynamic link
libraries (DLL). Truly unique is the singular ability to run multiple
programs concurrently, with true preemptive multitasking.

"The PBDK allows programmers to maintain their investment in code they have
created and third party toolkits they have purchased" reported Ethan
Winer, noted magazine writer, book author and developer of the Crescent
QuickPak toolkit. "Programmers will appreciate not only the time and money
they save with PBDK, but also the ease of moving their applications to the
Windows platform."

Over 350 predefined functions in the PBDK provide access to Windows
resources like menus, dialog boxes, controls, windows, graphic operations,
printing, clipboard, DDE channels, and much more. As few as a dozen of
these 350 functions will enable developers to write their first
PBDK/Windows application. Furthermore, developers will still be able to
edit and debug applications from within the familiar PowerBASIC IDE and
avoid the slow P-Code generated by other Basic languages.

The PBDK also supports advanced Windows features such as metafiles, virtual
screens, owner draw combo and list boxes, self-resizable controls, drag
and drop, MDI windows (Multiple Document Interface) and more. This makes
it easy to launch Windows applications from within PowerBASIC
applications, and even create child tasks running with preemptive
multitasking, synchronized through semaphores and common-named memory. An
extensive on-line help system is provided, along with two volumes of
printed documentation.

The Symantec Resource Toolkit (a $199 value) is also included as a special
bonus for charter purchasers. This industry-standard toolkit will let
programmers design dialog boxes, menus, icons, and bitmaps of applications
interactively.

"The PBDK is ideal for BASIC developers who have a large investment in
existing DOS code and find it difficult to move that code to Windows with
existing tools," explained Bob Zale, President of PowerBASIC, Inc.
"Programmers can continue to use procedural programming techniques; not
forced to fit their code into a purely event-driven model."

The PBDK is available to PowerBASIC customers as an upgrade for $149 by
calling (800) 780-7707 or (408) 659-8000 or by FAX at (408) 659-8008. It
is also sold as part of PowerBASIC Pro which includes the PowerBASIC 3.0
compiler, as well as the PowerBASIC Developer Kit for Windows at a
suggested retail price of $299. Applications developed with the PBDK are
royalty free, as a license to distribute the PBDK server is included. A
free demo disk set is available upon request. PowerBASIC, Inc. is a
privately held software company based in Carmel, California.
