ENGINEERING SYSTEMS INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES NEW VERSION OF PAM-STAMP
SOFTWARE WITH AUTOMATIC MESHING FEATURES

(Troy, Michigan; October 12, 1994) Engineering Systems International will
introduce version 95 of the PAM-STAMP stamping simulation software package
at the Autofact '94 trade show in Detroit this November. The new Version
95 offers automatic tool meshing capabilities which greatly reduce the
time required to create a stamping operation simulation. In the past, a
simulation often took weeks to create, with the process engineer spending
most of that time creating finite element meshes manually. With Version
95, after IGES tool geometry data is imported, all tool surface meshing is
done automatically by computer in a fraction of the time.

PAM-STAMP is designed to help the process engineer, at an early stage prior
to tool manufacturing, evaluate the formability of complex components and
iterate tool geometry and blank-holder designs. Many of the organizations
that beta-tested the program over the last several years have purchased
the commercial release and become regular users. These companies include
British Steel, BMW, ILVA, Fiat, Mazda, Peugeot, Volkswagen, GM, and Budd.

Initial simulations may be performed in 2-D, using a strip to represent a
given cross-section, assuming that the material flow in the direction
perpendicular to the strip is negligible. Next, special attention is paid
to the areas where difficulties are expected, by analyzing those in 3-D
with partial models. The full model is run as a final step. The phases
which are modeled by the simulation include: 1) binder wrap; 2) holding;
3) forming 4) trimming; and 5) spring-back simulation.
