ONTRACK RELEASES FREEWARE NLM VOLUME REPAIR DETECTOR

Educates users on safe options for recovering from NetWare volume
corruptions

October 11, 1994 -- Minneapolis, MN -- Ontrack Data Recovery today
announced the release of its freeware NLM Volume Repair Detector which is
designed to inform NetWare supervisors and system administrators about
safe methods for recovering from NetWare volume corruptions. The package
contains two sections, a Novell NetWare NLM that detects the loading of
VREPAIR (NetWare's volume corruption repair utility), and a slideshow
presentation which educates users on data security. The product file,
titled DETECTOR.EXE, is available free-of-charge on Ontrack's BBS by
dialing 612-937-0860.

For users running NetWare version 4.0. 4.01, or 4.02, the operating system
automatically loads VREPAIR and repairs errors without any advance warning
or opportunity for intervention from systems personnel. This is dangerous
because VREPAIR's process of creating a mountable volume may result in the
permanent loss of valuable data through the deletion of corrupted but
recoverable file and subdirectory information (see enclosed article).
Ontrack's detector will recognize the loading of VREPAIR and warn
supervisors to make certain that backups are adequate before attempting
any repairs that could permanently damage critical files.

Ontrack Data Recovery engineering manager Stuart Hanley reports, "Ontrack's
data recovery service has dealt with numerous NetWare users whose
otherwise recoverable data has been made irretrievable by volume
corruption repairs. When a NetWare volume corruption occurs and users have
no backups, we advise them to contact a professional data recovery service
immediately; before repair attempts are made, the corrupted data is
usually still recoverable. For those highly technical users who want to
attempt data recovery and volume repair on their own, I recommend using
Ontrack Data Recovery for NetWare (ODR for NetWare)." Developed in the
labs of Ontrack Data Recovery, ODR for NetWare allows users to copy files
from a downed server volume to other servers or volumes on the network.
This process ensures that data will remain safe while volume repairs are
made.

The second part of the Ontrack package is a slideshow which reviews screen
shots of ODR for NetWare, showing how its use is a secure option for
recovering data. In addition to copying files, ODR for NetWare gives users
the ability to perform file recovery and file system repairs without
bringing the file server off-line. In addition, users can prevent possible
data loss situations with a complete array of diagnostic, maintenance, and
data recovery routines.

Ontrack Data Recovery services specialize in recapturing data from any hard
drive, network, tape backup, floppy diskette, or alternative media
suffering from electro-mechanical failure or data corruption. Its parent
