U.S. ROBOTICS ANNOUNCES SCALABLE LAN ACCESS SOLUTIONS FOR ENTERPRISE-WIDE
NETWORKS

Corporate Remote LAN Access and Internet Service Providers:
Key Markets for Integrated LAN Access Platforms

SKOKIE, Ill., -- September 12, 1994 -- U.S. Robotics, Inc. (NASDAQ: USRX)
today announced its Total Control NETServer products for enterprise-wide
remote LAN access. The Total Control NETServer Card is the first LAN
access product integrated into a scalable chassis, providing powerful,
multiport LAN access for central sites and flexible solutions for smaller
networks or branch offices. Like all Total Control products, the new
NETServer also provides extensive management capabilities.

Additionally, the company is offering the dual-port Shared Access
NETServer/2 for smaller branch office applications. The product provides
an inexpensive solution with the same feature set as the Total Control
NETServer. The Shared Access NETServer/2 will be available in November,
1994.

The Total Control NETServer Card? which will also ship in November, targets
two key markets:

** Corporate enterprise networks with a need for telecommuting, remote LAN
access and LAN-to-LAN connectivity. Supports single-user IP/IPX remote
node clients, IP terminal server access, and dial-up LAN-to-LAN IP/IPX
routing.

** Internet access service providers, both for centralized dial-in sites
and remote points of presence, providing SLIP, PPP and Telnet access into
IP networks.

"Corporate network access represents much of the anticipated LAN access
market growth," said Todd Landry, U.S. Robotics LAN access product
manager. "We also expect that a significant portion of this growth will be
attributable to Internet access providers' entry into the market. It's a
natural fit for Internet service providers to include corporate network
access services as part of their offerings. An enabling platform such as
the Total Control NETServer Card will allow them to continue building
their Internet access business and also pursue opportunities in corporate
remote LAN access."

Total Control NETServer Card

The Total Control NETServer Card completely integrates remote LAN access
into U.S. Robotics' fully manageable Total Control Enterprise Network Hub.
This WAN/LAN communications platform combines U.S. Robotics' high-density,
robust V.34 modem technology for analog and digital communications with
high-performance gateway cards, including X.25, Ethernet, Token Ring and
T-l . The NETServer Card provides the added ability to handle dial-in IP
sessions, including support for PPP, SLIP and Telnet, with powerful
filtering and security mechanisms. It also includes an unlimited license
for remote node client software, allowing IP and IPX clients remote node
access via Novell's ODI interface.

The NETServer Card works in conjunction with U.S. Robotics' Total Control
ITU-T V.34 modems to provide 28.8 Kbps remote LAN access. Remote calls are
routed through U.S. Robotics' V.34 quad modems over the company's
proprietary high-speed bus to the NETServer card in the Total Control
chassis. The NETServer then routes the traffic to the network.

"There isn't a LAN access product on the market that offers this level of
integration," added Landry. "The architecture of the Total Control
Enterprise Network Hub has been designed for exactly this type of
technology integration."

The Total Control Enterprise Network Hub/16 (16-slot chassis) combines with
NETServer for multiport access into a central site; the Total Control
Enterprise Network Hub/6 (6-slot chassis) provides a flexible solution for
smaller installations or mid-size branch offices. The Total Control
NETServer Card will be available in 24- and 48-port versions, priced at
$5999 and $9999, respectively (Ethernet versions). U. S. Robotics will
also offer a software upgrade to bring the 24-port Total Control NETServer
Card to 48 ports.

Shared Access NETServer/2

The Shared Access NETServer/2 is a two-port product with the same
functionality as the Total Control NETServer Card. The product can be used
to connect smaller office sites as well as for dial-in LAN access. The
Shared Access NETServer/2 includes integrated V.34 modem technology and is
completely FLASH upgradable. The product is priced at $1995 for the
Ethernet version and $2495 for Token Ring.

NETServer Provides Remote Manageability and Upgradability

All NETServer products are FLASH ROM-based, allowing feature upgrades and
configuration changes to be administered from a central location.
NETServer products also provide local and remote manageability. The Total
Control NETServer Card and Shared Access NETServer/2 will include both
UNIX and Windows-based management tools that allow management through the
local network or via dial-up into the devices. U.S. Robotics will also
provide MIB extensions for customers using SNMP management packages such
as HP Openview, SunNet Manager, and NetView 6000.

The Total Control Enterprise Network Hub enables organizations with remote
locations, telecommuters and mobile employees to aggregate dial traffic
onto T-1 lines, route it onto a local area network and provide access to
corporate resources. The product is based on a 1 Gbps midplane, with
circuit and packet-switched buses to minimize processing time. Through
downloadable software-defined technology, U.S. Robotics can easily modify
and enhance the product to take advantage of new technologies.
