NEC TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES MULTISPIN VALUE LINE IN RESPONSE TO SOARING
DEMAND FOR CD-ROM READERS

NEC now targets growing mainstream consumer market segment

Wood Dale, Ill., Oct. 4, 1994--Recognizing the need for an affordable and
easy-to-use line of CD-ROM readers for the growing consumer market
segment, the pioneer of double-speed CD-ROM technology, NEC Technologies,
Inc., today announced the introduction of its MultiSpin 2V line of CD-ROM
readers.

The MultiSpin 2V line, which is targeted at the increasing number of home
and business users entering the market, offers double-speed NEC CD-ROM
technology at an affordable price. The products are specifically designed
for consumers who want an easy-to-use, easy-to-install CD-ROM reader.

"The V in our MultiSpin 2V line stands for value," said Marc Miller, NEC
Technologies' vice president of Advanced Media Products. "We are making it
easier for consumers to take advantage of CD-ROM technology by offering a
one-stop-shop, easy-to-use product at an affordable price. We're including
everything from our Simple Start installation kit to Microsoft's Encarta
Multimedia Encyclopedia and offering it all in one package."

According to Dataquest, an industry analyst firm, approximately 17.5
million CD-ROM readers will ship worldwide in 1994. This figure more than
doubles the 6.7 million CD-ROM readers sold in 1993. "Without question,
consumers are turning to CD-ROM technology more and more, and NEC is
targeting this growing consumer market segment with an affordable,
easy-to-use, easy-to-install product," said Miller.

In 1992, NEC was the first company to break the single-speed barrier and
enter the world of double-speed CD-ROM technology. One year later, the
company introduced the first 3X CDROM reader. In 1994, NEC led the
industry again by introducing the world's first stand-alone 4X CD-ROM
reader.

To ensure users of a hassle-free installation experience, NEC is including
its Simple Start installation kit with the MultiSpin 2Vi and 2V Deluxe
products. The Simple Start kit features concise, easy-to-understand
installation tools including an instructional video, a poster-sized
installation guide, a user manual and a Windows-based installation program
that allows users to choose either automatic or custom-installation of
their CD-ROM reader. Because of the MultiSpin 2V Mac's
ease-of-installation, all its installation package requires is the user
manual.

The NEC MultiSpin 2V product line will provide 300 KB/second data transfer
rate (two times the 150 KB/second data transfer rate of traditional or
single-speed readers) and a 320 millisecond access time. Like other
members of the MultiSpin family, 2V CD-ROM readers have a user-friendly
design and unmatched NEC quality. The product line will also be backed by
a two-year warranty and toll-free direct customer support.

All three CD-ROM readers within the MultiSpin 2V line meet MPC Level 2
standards, are XA Ready, and are compatible with QuickTime CD-I, VideoCD
playback and Kodak Multisession Photo CD standards.

MultiSpin 2Vi

This internal double-speed CD-ROM reader features Microsoft's award-winning
Encarta Multimedia Encyclopedia along with Animotion MCS CDMaster Lite
audio player software. The package comes complete with a Simple Start
installation kit (poster guide, manual, video and windows-based
installation program) and a 16-bit interface card and cable.

MultiSpin 2V Mac

Built specifically for the Macintosh, this external CD-ROM reader includes
Microsoft's Encarta Multimedia Encyclopedia, the new NEC version of
DriveCD from Casa Blanca Works, Inc., CD-Player software, and the
necessary cables for Macintosh hook-up. Because of its
ease-of-installation, the user-friendly Simple Start user manual is all
that is needed with this package.

MultiSpin 2V Deluxe

The MultiSpin 2V Deluxe offers a complete double-speed CD-ROM package,
providing all the equipment needed to experience the full capabilities of
multimedia computing. This internal double-speed CD-ROM reader features
deluxe, state-of-the-art, brand name components, providing great value at
a low price. This package includes all of the elements of the MultiSpin
2Vi, but also features three of the most popular CD-ROM software titles
available: MYST, Sim City and Microsoft' s Encarta Multimedia Encyclopedia
along with a 1 6-bit Creative Labs sound card and multimedia speakers.

According to several focus group studies, NEC learned that consumers prefer
the value of receiving a select number of quality software titles instead
of getting a large quantity of titles they may not use. NEC responds to
this by providing three high-quality award-winning programs, giving
end-users a quick start into multimedia. At the same time, this gives
end-users a software base to build on so that they can tailor a software
library that is oriented to their own specific interests.

If customers purchased three top-rated CD-ROM software titles, a 16-bit
sound card and speakers, they would expect to pay almost $300. With the
MultiSpin 2V Deluxe, customers receive software, sound accessories, an
interface card and a high-quality NEC CD-ROM reader. This combination,
plus the reliability, service and support NEC is known for, makes the
MultiSpin 2V Deluxe the best CD-ROM value available.

Shipping, Warranty and Pricing

The MultiSpin 2V CD-ROM readers will be available on October 4, 1994, and
may be purchased through NEC's nationwide network of authorized resellers
and select super-stores. All MultiSpin CD-ROM readers come with an
aggressive two-year limited warranty and toll-free technical support.

Estimated selling prices (ESP) for the MultiSpin 2V Series are as follows:

Model U.S. Pricing

MultiSpin 2Vi $189
