October 19, 1994 (Pickerington, OH) JEC TECH is introducing a new signaling
device for use with asyncronous dialup modems on leased telephone lines.
Leased lines are dedicated lines between two points and provide the user
with a circuit which usually has -16 dB of loss in it. Leased line modems
for these types of circuits provide the necessary signaling between both
ends and a pair (one for each end) can cost over $800.00.

Garden variety dialup asyncronous modems can be purchased for under $100.00
each, but they require external signals from the phone company to function
properly. You can 'fool' them to go on line when using leased lines, but
that takes someone at both ends. Experience has shown that these types of
connections will not stay up continuously. Eventually, one of the
mysterious things the phone company does will knock the connection down
and you're faced with re-establishing the connections at both ends.

The Model LL-1 Leased Line Signaling Unit will allow you to re-establish
these connections from either end. Here's how it works:

This assumes you have a Model LL-1 at each end of the circuit and that you
have both modems configured to auto answer.

1. Give the modem on the originate end the ATD command which
puts it on line waiting for modem tones.
2. Operate the signaling control on the LL-1 for about 5 seconds.
3. This rings the other end which goes off hook and generates the
   modem connect tones.
4. A connection is established after the modems agree on baud
rate. Hang up at either end disconnects.

Several companies are using this arrangement to achieve a throughput of
about 75k using a 5 to 1 compression mode. Granted, the actual baud rate
is just the baud rate the connection was established at (i.e. 14.4k), but
the compression mode does increase the through put drastically. A pair of
the Model LL-1 Signaling Units sells for $185.00 plus $8.00 shipping.
