IBM ANNOUNCES PASSPORT TO INFORMATION VIA WINDOWS AND LOTUS NOTES

SOMERS, N.Y., Oct. 11, 1994 . . . Successful business decisions hinge on
having access to the right information at the right time. With multiple
data sources, users often do not know what data exists, where it is, what
it means or how to access it. To help them find that information quickly,
IBM today announced two new additions to its DataGuide family of
information catalog products. DataGuide for Windows and DataGuide for
Lotus Notes provide powerful business-oriented solutions to help customers
locate enterprise data, describe it in business terms and launch
applications to access it.

Based on a graphical user interface (GUI) consistent with the operating
environment, DataGuide offers users of Microsoft Windows and Lotus Notes
an easy-to-use tool for finding and accessing data that is shared across
an organization. Both information objects, such as spreadsheets, report
and query outputs, documents and images, and data objects, including
tables, views and columns, can be catalogued in DataGuide.

Turning Data into Information

Once an object is identified, DataGuide can then invoke decision support
and desktop tools, such as spreadsheets, query/report writers, charting
packages, word processors and multimedia software programs, to retrieve,
process, analyze and present the data -- effectively turning it into
useful business information. With such capabilities, users in workgroups
and in data warehousing environments can now easily locate and access
information.

"By helping users quickly put their hands on the data they need, DataGuide
increases productivity and improves decision making in organizations,"
said Chris Arnold, vice president of data management, IBM Software
Solutions, and site general manager of IBM's Santa Teresa Laboratory. "Our
new tools also help reduce costs by promoting reuse of data."

Organize Data from Common Point of Control

DataGuide's administrator function, with its extensive set of utilities to
extract object definitions from various sources, provides a single point
of control for gathering and organizing objects to form an information
catalog. These catalogs reside in either a DATABASE 2 (DB2) for OS/2
(DB2/2) or DB2 for MVS database.

Pricing and Availability

In addition to Version 1.0 of DataGuide for Windows and DataGuide for Lotus
Notes, DataGuide is also available for OS/2 and MVS platforms. The new
versions will begin shipping on Oct. 24, 1994, with pricing set at $2,495
for a DataGuide for OS/2, DataGuide for Windows or DataGuide for Lotus
Notes starter kit, which includes an administrator and four users for
either OS/2, Windows or Lotus Notes environments. Additional user licenses
for any of the environments can be purchased in packs of 10 for $2,395 or
packs of 50 for $11,345.

Database Management

IBM's world-class distributed database family helps users create solutions
to manage data on mainframes, minicomputers, RISC workstations and
personal computers. IBM is the largest producer of database management
software in the industry.

Based in Somers, N.Y., IBM's Software Solutions Division develops, markets
and services a broad line of database management, application development
and workgroup computing solutions for a variety of industry-standard
operating systems and platforms, both IBM and others.
