IBM LAUNCHES ATM CAMPUS SOLUTIONS

Industry-leading offerings enhance LAN performance, from the desktop across
the enterprise

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Oct. 25, 1994 . . . IBM today brought full-network ATM
closer to reality with a set of products that provide rich ATM support for
interconnecting LANs in a campus environment -- a critical requirement for
customers who want to harness the many advantages of ATM for making
networks simpler, faster and more powerful. Today's announcements also
provide users with powerful options for managing and integrating ATM with
existing networking investments.

As businesses outgrow their networks, many are looking to ATM, or
Asynchronous Transfer Mode, as the technology that will allow them to
include solutions that require greater transmission speeds, help to
eliminate network bottlenecks, and facilitate applications such as
multimedia, image processing, document control and real-time backup. ATM's
speed is scalable, and so can be tailored to match backbone, desktop or
wide-area-network requirements. Its flexibility also promotes
cost-effective network expansion.

Today's announcements include:

o An ATM Backplane and ATM modules that allow customers to add
   ATM functions to the IBM 8260 Multiprotocol Intelligent
   Switching Hub and thus build high-speed backbones and provide
   much-needed higher bandwidth for servers and workstations;

o An ATM LAN Bridge that lets users reap the benefits of ATM
   without altering existing Token-Ring or Ethernet LAN
   configurations and applications;

o An ATM Campus Manager for AIX that provides a graphical user
   interface to facilitate the management of ATM networks within
   an enterprise.

"IBM is leading the industry with easily-upgradeable, cost-effective
solutions that let customers enhance LAN performance with ATM
technologies, from wide-area networks down to the desktop," says Antoine
Granatino, IBM division director of Campus Networking. "Today's
announcement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to a comprehensive ATM
strategy."

In June, IBM announced the broadest set of ATM products in the industry
--including wide area switches, ATM LAN emulation, and LAN adapters --
that enable customers to begin to adopt ATM as a full-network solution.
In addition to ATM, IBM offers customers a full range of networking
options that includes hubs, concentrators, switches and remote access
products and a versatile set of adapter products.

Chipcom Corporation also will offer the ATM hub solutions next year as part
of a marketing and development alliance signed by IBM and Chipcom in
Sept., 1992.

The 8260 ATM Switching Hub Model A17 will be available Nov. 11, 1994 for
$12,000. The Model Conversion Kit will be available March 31, 1995 for
$5,000. The 8281 ATM Bridge will be available May 31, 1995. The other ATM
hub products announced today will be available March 31, 1995.

Other prices are as follows:

  o    8260 Switch/Control Point Module - $14,500;
  o    8260 4-Port 100 Mbps Concentration Module - $8,000;
  o    8281 ATM Bridge with two LAN ports - $8,999;
  o    2-Port LAN Adapter - $1,999;
  o    100 Mbps ATM Adapter - $999;
  o ATM Campus Manager for AIX Version 1 - $6,500.
