New Multimedia Company Staffed by "Evil Dwarfs"

October 18, 1994 -- Santa has his elves. The DragonLord has his "Evil
Dwarfs".

The workers of DragonLord Software, a new multimedia company specializing
in Asian-culture education, have taken to calling themselves the "Evil
Dwarfs". There are "The Evil Dwarfs of the Art Department", "The Evil
Dwarfs of Marketing", and even "The Evil Dwarfs of the Software
Department".

It all started when the staff was on location in Nara, shooting the
pictures for their new title, DragonLord's Guide to NARA, Japan. There
they saw many ancient statues of Buddhist deities standing heavily on
snarling devilish imps---Evil Dwarfs. The crowning touch was a
thousand-year-old massive incense burner composed of a heavy bronze bowl
supported by three straining Evil Dwarfs. "Look-it's just like the work
that we do!" observed one of the workers, who has asked not to be
identified. "Difficult, tedious slave labor! Toiling in the background to
make sure things work right! Holding up the world on our shoulders with
incredible stamina! And never complaining at all!!" And thus were born the
"Evil Dwarfs" of DragonLord Software.

In actuality, the Buddhist statues represent the serious theme of the
triumph of good over evil. They are similar to the medieval statues of St.
George and the Dragon. However, it is obvious that their master Japanese
sculptors had a lively sense of humor, and it is this that the "Evil
Dwarfs" at DragonLord Software have picked up on, with no intention of
irreverence. The whimsical name fits the intensely creative staff well.

"The 'Evil Dwarfs' truly are heroic," says The DragonLord, the driving
force behind DragonLord Software. "Our Guide to NARA was produced in about
a year's time, even though it contains more than 1,200 pictures, more than
300 mixed sound recordings, and it takes 4-6 hours to run through
completely (including the Japanese language lessons). A 4-hour long
Hollywood movie would have taken more than two years to produce at the
very least, and it wouldn't contain the complex branchings we had to embed
in order to capture the layout of the city, nor a 300-entry index."

The spirit of the "Dwarfs" is captured in the title's cheerful "Theme Song
K", called the Kembutsu Uta or "Sightseeing Song", but unofficially known
as the "Evil Dwarf Marching Song". This happy whistling tune communicates
the pride of the "Dwarfs" in performing their work: making superior
sightseeing tours of little-known places in Asia, to promote better
understanding in the world. And, if they have to go live in Japan for
weeks at a time while taking pictures of drop-dead beautiful locales,
well, it's a thankless job, but someone's got to do it.

DragonLord Software is a leading supplier of quality Asian-culture
education software.
