New Company Teaches Japanese Culture Disguised as Tour

October 18, 1994 -- DragonLord Software, a new multimedia company, is
teaching Japanese culture by disguising the lessons in the form of a
guided tour of Nara, Japan's first permanent capital.

"It looks like a 4-hour-long tour of one of Japan's most beautiful cities,"
says the DragonLord, the reclusive head of DragonLord Software. "You
choose which way you want to explore, and then your beautiful tour guide
explains what you've found.
"In actuality, however, we're teaching bits of Japanese culture and history
to our viewers.

"Here is a country which is currently the second-largest economic power in
the world. And yet, how much do we know about it? Why do we still have
continuing cycles of trade friction?

"I think much of our trade friction springs from ignorance. This causes
poor marketing and inaccurate decisions. I think most Americans don't know
the basic, fundamental facts of the Japanese lifestyle-what kind of
clothes the people wear, what kind of food they eat, how wide the streets
are, how old the country is-let alone the more advanced everyday consumer
values. For instance, many people are surprised to find the tour guide
wearing cutoffs in the hot summer weather, instead of a kimono. But you
wouldn't wear a $2,000 prom dress to a picnic in America, unless you're
working at Disneyland or something similar. Unfortunately, it seems as if
many Americans have a Disneyland view of what Japan is actually like.

"Our plan is to raise the basic awareness of Americans by showing them the
roots of Japanese culture in an extended fashion. Sure, it's like teaching
someone about America by giving them a tour of Independence Hall in
Philadelphia--it's not much, but it's a start. We let them see what Japan
is really like--a lot more similar to America than expected in many
respects, and yet much more different in others--and hopefully, we let
them understand that there really is this separate country out there. If
we can teach some of the basic culture, and get people to think, then
maybe some of the unnecessary trade friction can be avoided.
