PIXELAB ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF A HIGH-CAPACITY FILE SYSTEM USING DAT TAPE
DRIVE

NAPERVILLE, IL (September 29, 1994) -- Pixelab, Inc. has announced the
release of DATMAN, a software package that transforms a 4mm DAT tape drive
into a high-performance multi-gigabyte MS-DOS file system.

The DATMAN file system supports up to 8 Gigabytes of on-line storage. Over
256,000 files and over 16,000 subdirectories can be created on a tape
cartridge. It provides an MS-DOS compatible file system so that most
MS-DOS and Windows applications can read and write files on the tape
directly. Directory searches on the DATMAN tape are instantaneous since
the directory records are kept in memory with an advanced caching
algorithm. Once the DATMAN device driver module is installed in memory,
the tape drive will behave like a floppy disk, except for its gigantic
storage space and the high throughput on large volume data transfer
operations which exceeds 16 MB/min.

DATMAN distinguishes itself from traditional tape control software (mostly
backup programs) by its unparalleled flexibility in file accesses. Its
unique file cataloging method is especially suitable for the so-called
"incremental" backup scheme. Any files, whether incrementally saved or
not, even including those once deleted, can be quickly brought back for an
examination or retrieval. The traditional incremental backup methods have
been particularly cumbersome and time-consuming to restore files.
Retrieval of previous versions of files is also available.

DATMAN is compatible with ASPI, which has become the industry standard SCSI
device interface. Therefore, virtually any SCSI host adapters can be used
for tape drive interfaces. The DATMAN resident module can be loaded to and
unloaded from memory at any time. In addition, DATMAN can load the ASPI
manager if it has not been loaded. This capability allows one to install
and remove the on-line DAT volume without editing the CONFIG.SYS file or
rebooting. The DATMAN file system with a portable tape unit interfaced
with a parallel-to-SCSI adapter can serve as a genuinely portable file
repository.

The DATMAN package includes a number of useful utility programs many of
which are useful for day-to-day needs and are not limited to tape-based
files. DATMAN supports most major DDS-compliant DAT drives, including
Hewlett-Packard, Sony, Conner and WangDAT models.

DATMAN version 1.0 is now available directly from Pixelab at $150 per copy.
A full DAT tape subsystem including the DATMAN software, a tape drive, a
SCSI host adapter, cable, etc. starts at $1199. Also available is the
DATMAN API kit which is a collection of file access functions which allow
system integrators and application developers to write programs in the C
language to access files on DAT tape directly. Universities and other
academic institutions may contact Pixelab for a complimentary DATMAN
software package. A free demo diskette with the file manager utility
program is available upon request.
