COGNEX LAUNCHES ON-LINE APPLICATION ENGINEERING SUPPORT FOR VISION SYSTEMS

AE On-Line Provides Real-time Vision Development Assistance

ASSEMBLY TECHNOLOGY EXPO, Rosemont, IL, September 27, 1994 -- Cognex
Corporation (NASDAQ:CGNX) today announced "Application Engineer On-Line,"
a unique multimedia customer support service for it's machine vision
systems.

Application Engineer On-Line (AE On-Line) enables Cognex customers to
receive real-time assistance during application development and
installation from Cognex engineers via a high-speed modem. Over this
remote link, the customer and Cognex engineers can together review actual
video images of the parts being inspected, as well as the vision program
being developed, eliminating the travel cost and time delays in
conventional on-site support. This new service is available directly from
Cognex or it's authorized system integrators.

To use the service, customers call a Cognex hot-line or their system
integrator using a combination of software and hardware that sets up a
real-time link through which an engineer can remotely operate and monitor
the customer's vision system. Being able to actually see the video image
which the vision system is analyzing allows Cognex engineers to quickly
assess lighting and optics issues, as well as check on the customer's use
of the vision system's software tools.

"It is an effective way of enabling users and developers to fine-tune
complex vision applications," notes Steve Weaver of United Technologies
Automotive (Peru, Indiana), an early user of the service. "In our case,
the help we received from Cognex through AE On-Line enabled me to quickly
resolve several small problems that might have delayed the deployment of
an important application."

"Like many vision system users, I'm not a C-programmer or an expert in the
technology," continued Mr. Weaver. "This is proving to be a really useful
service for me."

AE On-Line supports all Cognex vision systems, including the new Checkpoint
system, as well as Cognex's complete family of C-programmable and
application-specific products. AE On-Line includes six months of phone
support, software, a high-speed modem, a plug-in video capture board for
installation on the application development PC, and all required cables.

The package sells for $5,000 and is currently available for shipment.

Cognex Corporation designs, develops, manufactures, and markets a family of
machine vision systems that are used to replace human vision in a wide
range of manufacturing processes. To date, the company has sold more than
20,000 machine vision systems worldwide. Headquartered in Natick,
Massachusetts, Cognex has support facilities in California, Illinois,
Minnesota, Japan, France, Germany, and the U.K.
