BRADLEES TAPS SYBASE AS ENTERPRISE STANDARD

Northeastern Retailer to Integrate Enterprise-Wide Operations with SYBASE
Technology

EMERYVILLE, CA, September 26, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that Bradlees, Inc., a major
Northeastern department store chain, has chosen to standardize on SYBASE
technology as the foundation for its enterprise client/server information
system. Bradlees' selection of Sybase is part of a large-scale, multi-year
project, called Bradlink, designed to create an enterprise-wide
client/server computing environment.

The new system is expected to support all aspects of Bradlees' operations,
which include nearly 16,000 employees in 127 retail stores, corporate
offices, and warehousing sites. By introducing client/server systems
across its entire enterprise, Bradlees expects to achieve significant
benefits, including improved access to information, reduced system
development time, and long-term cost efficiencies. Bradlees will
standardize around the entire family of SYBASE products and utilize
applications and development tools that work with SYBASE.

"Sybase has the only database designed from the ground up to run
client/server," said Judy Newdom, Bradlees senior vice president of
information systems. "Sybase has the best products, and its connectivity
offerings are unmatched. With Sybase, we will be able to run an integrated
database and display it to the customer in a very straightforward fashion.
The Sybase architecture provides the ability to collect data that may be
cross-functional or cross-departmental and make it easily accessible."

"The flexibility and openness of the SYBASE architecture in combination
with the interoperability software needed to integrate heterogeneous data
sources, platforms, and networking products will bolster Bradlees' ability
to stay competitive in the future," said Richard Yanowitch, Sybase vice
president of corporate marketing. "Our consulting group will work with
Bradlees to ensure that the architectural design of its information
systems accurately reflects Bradlees' business structure and effectively
supports its operations."

Bradlees is working with the Sybase consulting organization, Worldwide
Professional Services, to execute a systems migration plan focusing on
organizational structure, applications, technology, and data definition
and modeling. The plan will address a comprehensive array of key
enterprise business challenges, including:

* Transformational issues, including new methods for analysis and design of
data, introduction of IT to new user groups, and re-engineering of
business work flows.

* Tactical operations, including sales, inventory, distribution, and
purchasing.

* Support functions, including personnel, benefits, cost accounting,
general ledger, labor scheduling, and office automation.

* Strategic systems for executive decision-making and analysis.

The migration plan will provide for the integration of Bradlees' mainframe
hardware and legacy application software, distributed networks, personal
computer platforms, and distributed client/server components. All
applications, including legacy applications, will be totally re-written to
take advantage of the Sybase architecture.

Initial projects slated for 1994 include a labor management system designed
to help the company more effectively deploy personnel and a system to help
plan product promotions and pricing. Bradlees will also utilize the
recently announced SYBASE Navigation Server for managing large volumes of
sales and inventory data. SYBASE Navigation Server is a high-performance
relational database system designed for massively parallel processing
computers, and provides unlimited scalability for data-intensive
applications such as decision support and data mining.
