BLACK LABS SHIPS FIRSTCLASS RETRIEVER

Enhanced Newton MessagePad Client Now Available to Users of FirstClass
Group Communications Software.

Boulder, Colo., October 17, 1994 -- Black Labs, Inc. is now shipping
FirstClass Retriever+, an enhanced Newton MessagePad client for the
popular FirstClass e-mail and conferencing system from SoftArc Inc. of
Markham, Ontario, Canada.

A significant upgrade, FirstClass Retriever+ allows users to navigate
FirstClass workgroup conferences (not just private mail) using the Newton
select and tap interface. FirstClass Retriever+ displays files, folders
and other conferences located within each conference. FirstClass
Retriever+ automatically stores retrieved messages temporarily for
off-line reading after being disconnected from the FirstClass host. These
messages may be permanently stored by the user.

FirstClass Retriever+ also allows the user to access the powerful search
capabilities of FirstClass to search a mailbox, conference, multiple
conferences, or the entire FirstClass system for information. Options can
be configured by the user to allow bodies of messages and message envelope
areas to be searched.

Like Black Labs' initial product FirstClass Retriever, FirstClass
Retriever+ operates in two modes: Connect and Xchange, corresponding to
the two most frequently used operating modes for electronic mail systems.
In Connect mode, the user can selectively read and respond to messages
while on-line with a FirstClass server. Xchange mode invokes an automated
session allowing the user to quickly download messages for later review
and upload messaged created off-line in batch mode.

"We are enthusiastic about the pairing of FirstClass Retriever+ and
products such as the wireless MessagePad Grouper from Digital Ocean," said
Doug Swartz, president of Black Labs. "For the first time, users can gain
immediate access with a Newton, not only to personal mail but also to
corporate information--no matter where they are, on the road, at a client
site or in a meeting."

FirstClass Retriever+ incorporates all the features of the FirstClass
Retriever product that has been available for the past seven months from
Black Labs, including the ability to automatically retrieve, read and
reply to mail from remote FirstClass servers using a Newton MessagePad
with either an internal PCMCIA modem, an external serial modem,
modem-emulating wireless transceivers or AppleTalk. FirstClass Retriever+
also shares with FirstClass Retriever the capability to create messages
offline for later transfer to a FirstClass system, the ability to
permanently or temporarily store messages for viewing off-line and the
ability to permanently store access profiles for multiple FirstClass
systems.

FirstClass Retriever+ has suggested a retail price of $99. Registered
owners of FirstClass Retriever may upgrade to FirstClass Retriever+ for
$40.
