The SPA Supports Educational Alliances with Cable and Telephone Companies

A new publication maps out potential partnerships

October 19, 1994, (Washington, D.C.)- The Software Publishers Association
(SPA) announced the release of a new publication on the converging
channels of the educational software, cable, and telecommunications
industries. The report, "Educational Content on the Big Wires:
Partnerships Between Developers and the Cable and Telephone Industries",
provides information about potential partnerships between educational
software publishers, cable, and telephone companies .

Why is there a need for such a publication? Due to growth in the
educational market, cable and telephone companies are forming business
alliances with educational content publishers. To make education materials
available to all home learners, cable and telephone companies are readying
themselves for the interactive marketplace of the future. Educational
software for home and school use is in great demand. The home education
software market has grown more than 120% in the past two quarters, 27% of
all Americans have installed personal computers in the home, and CD
software sales increased by 366% last quarter.

"These optimistic trends reflect consumer demands for home education and
the inevitable growth of an interactive marketplace. It is a foregone
conclusion that educational software will ultimately find its way to the
big wires of the cable and telephone industry, " said Ken Wasch, SPA's
Executive Director.

John Kernan, Chairman and CEO of an interactive educational television
(ITV) company Lightspan Partnerships, Inc. said, "Interactive television
will certainly be a big market for educational software publishers in the
future, but no one knows when or how. The big opportunities are many years
away, but publishers can, and should, educate themselves about the market
now."

In response to this expanding market, the SPA report compiled information
about the potential educational projects to be undertaken by the nation's
leading cable and telephone companies. The SPA's guide familiarizes
educational software vendors with the enormous opportunities for software,
cable, and telephone company alliances.
