New Wireless Bridge Sets Throughput, Effective Range Records

AirLink Bridge guarantees full throughput speed up to 15 miles

September 1, 1994 -- Sunnyvale, CA -- Cylink Corporation today unveiled the
AirLink Bridge, a remote Ethernet wireless bridge that sets industry
benchmarks for robustness, throughput and range.

Based on spread spectrum radio technology, the AirLink Bridge guarantees
useful throughput up to its fully-rated speed. At 1,872 64-byte packets
per second wireless link capacity, the range is over 15 miles. At other
capacities, ranges can reach up to 20 miles.

By "vetting" packages at full wired Ethernet speeds, the bridge ensures
that only the appropriate packages cross the wireless link.

Because it is full-duplex, there are no end-to-end collisions which degrade
throughput and cause re-transmission. Together these insure that the user
obtains maximum benefit from the wireless link.

The AirLink Bridge is priced under $9,000 and will be available in the
fourth quarter, 1994.

Designed specifically for outdoor, interbuilding connectivity, the AirLink
Bridge provides simultaneous bi-directional transmission of Ethernet
packets over a robust link which maintains full throughput at maximum
range.

The AirLink Bridge incorporates both radio and bridge management under SNMP
protocols, giving the network manager maximum control and monitoring
capabilities. The AirLink Bridge is robust and reliable, delivering better
than a 10E-10 bit-error rate. Its spread spectrum transmitter distributes
the signal over a bandwidth far wider than that used by conventional
modulation techniques. The receiver decodes the desired data and resists
interference from extraneous sources.

Based on technology specifically designed for interbuilding applications,
AirLink Bridge quickly establishes a link within a building or across
town. Line-of-site links can effectively reach up to a record-setting 30
miles with a directional antenna.

All Cylink bridges are easy to install and support all networking operating
systems and protocols including Novell (IPX), TCP/IP, DECnet, XNS, SNA,
IBM LAN Server, Microsoft LAN Manager, Banyan VINES and 3Com 3+ Open.

Other features include remote software download, redundant wireless or hard
wired link and automatic switchover from/to wired alternatives in case of
an emergency. Back panel ports accommodate all LAN wired interface
standards.

All Cylink bridges work through digital spread spectrum modulation and meet
all IEEE 802.3 LAN standards. The 802.3 LAN interfaces are for "thick"
coax, "thin" coax and twisted pair cables. All higher level protocols are
transparent. It features learning bridge capabilities and provides
protocol support for the Spanning Tree Algorithm.

Diagnostic reports include the number of forwarded packets, the number of
collisions and CRC errors. All software can be remotely down loaded or
upgraded to FLASH memory.

The AirLink Bridge is FCC Part 15 certified (G83 BRIDGE) as a spread
spectrum transmitter. No user license is required for operation in the
United States and many other countries. Cylink's Bridge comes with a 12
month warranty and can be serviced through a worldwide sales and
distribution network.
