DESCRIPTION

Backup, Archive and Recovery Functions

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 provides an enterprise-wide backup and
archive facility for a wide variety of LAN file servers and individual
workstations. An OS/2-based system is the backup/archive server, storing
the data on a variety of devices ranging from high-speed disk systems,
optical drives and tape systems.

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 allows you to schedule automated
backups when it is convenient for you and your users. You can
simultaneously backup the hard disks for multiple workstations or LAN
servers. The data can be automatically compressed prior to being sent to
the backup server, reducing the network load as well as the backup/archive
server's storage and CPU requirements.

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 can minimize the amount of data that
is unnecessarily backed up. ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2's
incremental backup, along with its database which tracks all file copies,
the ability to collocate data from a client on backup media, and the
ability to reclaim media on the ADSM backup server alleviate the need for
periodic full backups. In addition, backups that are halted or end
prematurely due to system failures can be resumed without the need to
start the backup from the beginning.

Assets Protection: ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 is designed to
protect and enhance your company's information and system investments by:

o Managing network storage

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 allows workstation users
to backup or archive files through an ADSTAR Distributed
Storage Manager/2 server function, thereby protecting all your
   company's valuable data.

o Implementing recovery solutions for LANs and workstation disks
   and diskettes

o Supporting multiple networks and multiple client computer
systems Supervising the authority to access specific files
that have been backed up or archived and allowing cross client
   restore to other operating systems

The ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 handles data backup and archiving
for a wide array of workstations and file servers. The platforms included
are:

o DOS 5.0 or later
o OS/2 1.3 or later
o NetWare 3.11, 3.12 or 4.01
o Microsoft Windows 3.1

The following additional clients are also available:

o HP-UX 8.07 for System 700 and System 800
o AIX/6000 Version 3.1.5 or later
o Macintosh System 6.07 or Macintosh System 7
o SunOS Version 4.1.1/Solaris 1.0
o SCO Open Desktop 2.0, SCO UNIX 386 Release 3.2.4
o DEC ULTRIX 4.2A or 4.3 for DECstation

Improved Worker Productivity: With ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2,
backups can be scheduled automatically, significantly enhancing user
productivity. Users can backup/archive complete file systems,
directories, single or multiple files using a windowed, graphical
interface or simple commands. When required, files can be restored for a
system quickly and easily. To free up space on the local hard disk, users
can archive the low-use files and then erase the local copy. If the files
are ever needed again, they can be easily retrieved.

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 is designed to improve productivity by
allowing data to be easily shared between users, even those using
different operating systems. A user can authorize other users to access
one or more files that have been backed up or archived. These files can
then be easily restored by another user's workstation running a compatible
operating system. DOS or Windows data can be restored to a DOS, Windows
or an OS/2 client. OS/2 data that matches the DOS FAT file system
convention can be restored to a DOS or Windows Client. Data backed up or
archived from a UNIX-based client (SunOS, AIX/6000, HP-UX, DEC ULTRIX and
SCO UNIX) can be restored to any other of these clients.

Users' productivity is improved by eliminating the need to keep local
copies of the backed up or archived data. This also leaves local disk
space for other uses. ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 also gives the
user access to the most current copy of the data, avoiding the possibility
of duplicated or out-dated data.

The ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 server is designed to provide
users with a collocation feature which places all files associated with a
client file system on a minimum number of sequential storage volumes.
Because user files are consolidated, tape mounts are reduced when
restoring or retrieving large numbers of files from tape. This can result
in a significant time savings.

The backup/archive server provides multitasking, which allows each client
session with the server to be run as a separate task. For example,
multiple clients can backup data simultaneously while other server or
client operations are occurring.

Improved Data Availability: ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 is
designed to provide high data availability through backup/archive server
functions, a database and recovery log, and database or log mirroring.

The database maintains inventory information for all of the backup and
archive data. It also stores information about registered clients, and
access control information. A recovery log tracks all changes made to the
database and ensures that, if a system failure occurs, the database can be
restored.

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 provides the availability of data in
the event of a database or recovery log media failure by providing an
optional software mirroring feature for the database and recovery log.
You can define up to two additional copies of each database volume and
each recovery log volume for mirroring.

The ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 also allows you to make
configuration changes while the system is online. With the export/import
feature, you can also move backup/archive data from one server to another.
This may be accomplished by using offline storage such as tape or online
storage via flat files.

Hierarchical Storage Management Support

The ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 server stores data on a variety of
storage devices in system managed, administrator controlled storage
hierarchies with automatic migration from the higher to lower performing
devices providing optimum cost/performance trade-offs.

Optimized Support of Storage: ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2
supports many popular storage devices (IBM, Exabyte, LAGO).

The ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 provides a data migration
capability that includes automatic movement of older data to higher
capacity/lower cost media within the storage hierarchy.

Comprehensive Administrator Support

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 is designed to simplify and reduce the
workstation user and LAN administrator's effort when managing backup and
storage.

Improved Administrator Productivity: ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2
allows administrators to query and manage the ADSTAR Distributed Storage
Manager/2 server function remotely through easy-to-use graphical and/or
command line interfaces.

An AIX/6000 MOTIF-based administrator GUI is available as part of ADSTAR
Distributed Storage Manager/2 complimenting the OS/2 2.1-based
administrator GUI.

Centralized Control/System Flexibility: ADSTAR Distributed Storage
Manager/2 system is extremely flexible. The administrator can easily
control and change the configuration of the system, enhancing system
growth options. Under administrator control are the following:

o New, compatible client platforms may be added to or deleted
from the backup/archive system without modification to the
   ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 program.
o Storage and database space to be used by the server can be
   added or deleted as required.
o Additional storage device types can be added when appropriate.
o Backup/archive data can be moved between ADSTAR Distributed
Storage Manager servers using an export/import capability.

Increased Capacity/Performance Improvement: There is also an optional data
compression feature provided that can reduce network traffic, transmission
time and ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 server storage
requirements.

Open Enterprise

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 supports a number of open standards
and provides support for interoperability between System/390, OS/2 and AIX
running on the RISC System/6000 and workstation platforms. It is

workstations as client environments: HP-UX, SPARC/Solaris,
AIX/6000, SCO UNIX 386 and DEC ULTRIX

The OS/2 Version 2-based administrative client graphical user interface is
a SystemView compliant interface for administrator functions and is
designed to the SAA Common User Access (CUA'91) guidelines.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 is a member of the ADSM family of
products. These products are designed to promote data availability,
storage management, and data access across heterogeneous network
environments.

Data is an enterprise-wide business asset. Critical data is often
distributed across many platforms, including distributed workstations or
LANs. The data and storage facilities in this distributed environment are
often managed by local, independent LAN administrators or end users. Many
of the management tools tend to be labor intensive and subject to error.
The results may be inconsistent or ineffective backup/archiving of data,
accidental data loss, unnecessary duplication or under-utilization of
storage resources across the enterprise.

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 addresses your needs for asset
protection and data availability in a distributed environment. It
provides operational flexibility by allowing users to define their need
for backup and archiving. It provides productivity gains by automating a
formerly labor-intensive process.

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 is ideal if the following apply to
your business:

o Have mission critical applications running on your
   workstations
o Have seen your storage needs grow

Data Access Services: If OS/2-based backup/archive clients are part of
your ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager/2 system, you should consider the
functions available with ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager: Data Access
Services (DAS) that can be used with their OS/2 system. The DAS component
enables application programs running on an OS/2 Version 2 system access
record-formatted data (sequential, direct or keyed) and stream-file data
on a local system as well as on a remote non-OS/2 system. DAS is an
implementation of the source (client) support as defined by the IBM
Distributed Data Management (DDM) Architecture (SC21-9526) for
client/server computing. Data Access Services (DAS) can satisfy the
following requirements:

o Transparent access to data from remote platforms

   - Record or byte stream oriented data
   - Alien file data, such as unique format workstation data
created by the multiple workstation platforms

o Improved productivity for application developers

   - New applications for remote platforms to access heritage
data using high level languages (HLL)
   - Modification of existing HLL applications to run on remote
      platforms
   - Data sharing with other workstation applications as well as
      mainframe applications.
   - Network efficiency gains by reducing upload/download
requirements for data and accessing data "in place"

o Ability to leverage existing investments in data,
applications, support skills, and storage capacity

DDM target(server) support software is required to exploit Data Access
Services (DAS) from an OS/2 client. DDM target support is currently
available on MVS/ESA, CICS/MVS, CICS/VSE, OS/400, and 4680 Store Systems.

Data Access Services is separately orderable as a CD-ROM (SK2T-8706).
