WELCH ALLYN INTRODUCES NEW CHECK READER
--Multiple Data Capture Capabilities In One Small Unit--

June 1, 1995 -- Skaneateles Falls, NY -- Welch Allyn announced that it has
developed a new multi-use check reader that reads MICR check data
magnetically, can read magnetic stripe credit card data and can support
bar code scanning in just over a 20 inch footprint. The unit, called the
SCANTEAM 8300 (ST8300) Check Reader, is now available to customers,
according to Liz Michalec, Marketing Communications Manager for the
Skaneateles Falls, New York-based manufacturer.

The ST8300 is the first check reading technology to be designed with the
flexibility to meet the varying data collection needs of both big and
small retailers who face increasing losses due to check and credit card
fraud, Michalec said.

The unit operates on a wide input power range, and comes standard with a
triple track mag stripe port for an integrated or external swipe reader,
plus one RS232 port, making it adaptable for future peripherals such as
PIN Pad and Signature Capture units. A base unit is also available with
one port for retailers requiring check reading capability only.

Additional ST8300 features include an integrated interface/wedge controller
that provides system compatibility with and can drive power to hundreds of
POS terminals or PCs, and builtin flash memory based firmware that accepts
programming modifications, such as editing and formatting output data.

Welch Allyn developed the ST8300 specifically to help retailers satisfy
their need to become more flexible in their data capture capability,
Michalec explained. "Our new unit can adapt to a variety of applications,
giving retailers the ability to better control fraud, as well as further
enhance customer service, all within one of the smallest POS footprints on
the market," she said.
