SunScreen Creates Virtual Secure Private Networks FireWall-1 1.2 Completes
Sun's Security Portfolio

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- May 23, 1995 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today
announced Solstice SunScreen and a new version of Solstice Firewall-1, a
complete suite of network security offerings designed to address all
levels of security needs for companies which engage in electronic commerce
on the Internet and other complex data networks.

"The Internet requires companies to make decisions about security, while
considering cost, efficiency and convenience," said Eric Schmidt, chief
technology officer, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Sun developed a set of
security products that addresses the total range of Internet security
needs."

The SunScreen solution is a complete network security solution designed to
deliver the highest levels of security for complex commercial networks in
industries such as telecommunications, banking, health and government.

At the heart of the solution is a dedicated network device whose unique
"stealth" design makes it virtually invisible on the network and to
hackers trying to attack. The Sun Screen solution delivers unparalleled
levels of security by integrating highly advanced packet screening with
authentication and privacy technologies. Site-to-site encryption enables
geographically dispersed companies or business partners to use the
Internet as a virtual, secure, private network (VSPN), without the need
for expensive private lines, specialized applications, or customized
existing applications.

"We have been testing the SunScreen solution in our Zurich headquarters for
the past several months, and are very pleased with the results," said
Giorgio Scherl of Union Bank of Switzerland. " SunScreen offers the kind
of security required to protect communication between multiple Union Bank
of Switzerland sites."

How SunScreen Works

The SunScreen solution implements powerful packet screening technology to
provide access control capabilities to enable the regulation and
monitoring of an enterprise network while being connected to any network,
private or public. The Solstice SunScreen solution's packet screening
technology enables corporations to grant employees wide access to the
Internet and other public network services and to publish corporate
materials with a very high level of protection for the company's assets.

The SunScreen configuration consists of two components: the SPF-100 which
contains the SunScreen software and to which IP packets are logged, and
the SunScreen Administration Station, which administers the SPF-100. A
dedicated, "cloaked" hardware device, the SPF-100 is difficult to detect
on the network.

The SunScreen Administration Station, which includes a powerful GUI design,
enables system and network administrators to manage multiple SunScreen
security solutions remotely and securely and to define a security policy
with minimum effort.

Authentication and privacy features make the SunScreen product unique, and
enables the use of the Internet and other public data networks as a highly
cost-effective infrastructure for secure communications and transactions
between business partners or a company's remote sites. A complete
solution, SunScreen includes network services for installation,
configuration, security audits and consulting on security policies.

Solstice FireWall-1 1.2

The FireWall-1 software is a layered network security tool for the Solaris
software environment that allows an organization to access the Internet's
resources without compromising internal network security. An
out-of-the-box software product, FireWall-1 supports advanced packet
filtering services and provides new user-level access control. It also
includes user authentication and enhancements to the anti-spoofing
capability. The FireWall-1 software's easy-to-use administrative GUI
enables users to implement their security policy and manage it with little
effort.

Because it is transparent to users and applications, implementation of the
FireWall-1 software requires no additional training for end-users. The top
selling security product on the market today, FireWall-1 addresses the
basic security needs of businesses with a low cost of ownership solution.

The addition of the SunScreen solution and the new FireWall-1 software to
Sun's suite of network security products enables Sun to deliver the most
comprehensive set of security solutions available in the industry. Sun's
offering includes products and solutions which address trade-offs between
costs, efficiency and convenience and delivers to customers the optimum
security solution.

With revenues in excess of $5 billion, Sun Microsystems, Inc., is a world
leader in the design, manufacture and sale of open network computing
products and services, including work stations and servers, microprocessor
and application-specific IC design, system software, networking products,
professional service and support and after-marketing services. The
company's SPARC workstations, multiprocessing servers, SPARC
microprocessors, Solaris operating software and UNIX service organization
each rank No. 1 in the UNIX industry. Founded in 1982, Sun is
headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., and employs more than 13,000
employees in 32 offices worldwide.
