SHARP RESEARCH LABORATORIES ESTABLISHED IN THE U.S.

OSAKA, JAPAN -- May 22, 1995 -- Sharp Corporation announced today the
formation of Sharp Laboratories of America, Inc. (SLA) in Camas,
Washington to focus on multimedia research. As a subsidiary of Sharp
Electronics Corporation, Mahwah, N.J., this new research and development
facility enhances Sharp's commitment to the U.S. market by localizing
research and development, manufacturing and production and sales and
service. Heading the new laboratory will be Jon K. Clemens, Ph.D.

Dr. Clemens was formerly associated with The Stanford Research Institute as
senior vice president. He is an internationally renowned expert in the
multimedia field, with many successes over the years in consumer
electronics technology, especially image technology.

Sharp Laboratories of America, Inc. will initially employ 30 top-level
research and development professionals and is expected to increase to 100
over the next five years. The central theme of this new facility will be
leading edge digital processing technology -- the fusing of images,
telecommunications and information -- and will concentrate on promoting
research in hardware, software, systems and devices for multimedia. In
addition, it will collaborate with universities and colleges in the U.S.
in a broad range of research. Successful developments will be immediately
shared with Sharp's production and sales/marketing facilities in the U.S.
to bring exciting new personal multimedia products to the market quickly.

The facility will be located adjacent to Sharp Microelectronics Technology,
Inc. (SMT), which develops and manufactures semiconductors and liquid
crystal displays (LCDs), as well as design applications for
telecommunications technologies. Both SLA and SMT will work together to
promote research and development for software and systems to create
original multimedia products and systems suited for the U.S. market.

With the addition of Sharp Laboratories of America, Inc., Sharp now has
research and development facilities in Oxford, England; Japan and the U.S.
to help meet consumer needs throughout the world.
