QMS Announces Support for Industry Standard Printer Management Format

June 12, 1995--Mobile, AL--QMS Inc. (NYSE:AQM) today announced that it
would support the newly announced printer Management Information Base
(MIB) format in future QMS print system products. The standard MIB format
will allow supporting network management software applications to monitor
the status of and manage QMS print systems by providing a common
"language" for exchanging commands and status information over networks
via Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).

The standard MIB format was developed by the Printer Working Group of the
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), a consortium of leading printing
industry vendors, including QMS. The Printer Working Group was formed to
define a common information base which can be used to manage printers. The
Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF) has already announced the
availability of a complementary standard, the Printer Management
Information Format (MIF) for managing printers via workstations. The MIF
utilizes the same conventions as the standard printer MIB, allowing
consistent management capabilities for compliant printers in a network
environment regardless of whether they are attached directly to networks
or through workstations.

"By announcing support for this important industry standard, QMS can
continue to provide leading edge printing solutions which- deliver maximum
flexibility and manageability with the broadest number of user systems,"
said Scott Chandler, QMS executive director of product marketing. "The
growing complexity of mixed platform network environments makes the
adoption of common standards such as this one a crucial part of building
network printer systems which perform equally well for all network users
and can be easily managed by network administrators."

The availability of a standard management and control convention for print
systems paves the way for software developers to provide "print system
aware" applications which make the task of printing in complex network
environments easier for the user. By allowing these applications to
determine print system capabilities and status, the applications in turn
can notify users of potential problems such as supplies outages, or direct
a specific print job to the printer best suited for that job.

Because of the QMS focus on enterprise printing solutions, the company
maintains a strong commitment to further the "network intelligence" of its
print systems and has been an active member of the Printer Working Group
since its inception. The company is also active with leading network
application developers, working to further the implementation of advanced
print systems within their environments. An example of this is QMS' work
with Novell's NEST development technology which will be used to facilitate
printer integration of QMS print systems into Novell's NetWare Distributed
Print Services (NDPS). QMS was recently the first company to demonstrate a
NEST-enabled print system which can take advantage of NetWare 4.X
functionality, including NetWare Directory Services and Security
features.

QMS print systems supporting the standard MIB format are expected to be
available in the latter half of this year.
