Portrait Display Labs Announces 17" Pivot Displays

New models offer bigger page display and more flexibility than any other
monitor made

April 16, 1995 -- (Fremont, CA) Portrait Display Labs, Inc., has announced
two new bigger, better, and more affordable 17" color multi-frequency
displays combining portrait and landscape views in a single pivoting
monitor for Windows, Macintosh, and Power Macintosh computers.

The first model, available in July, is the Pivot 1700, a .26 dot pitch
color pivoting display providing non-interlaced resolutions of up to 1024
x 768 (768 x 1024 in portrait view) at 76 Hz, and 1280 x 1024 at 60 Hz.
The average street price is expected to be around $995.

The second model, available in December, is the Pivot 1700 Professional,
positioned for document imaging, graphics, and other applications where
higher resolutions at higher refresh rates are desirable. The color Pivot
1700 Professional offers .26 dot pitch and maximum non-interlaced
resolutions up to 76 Hz of 1280 x 1024 (1024 x 1280 in portrait view) on
Windows, and 1152 x 870 (870 x 1152 in portrait view) on the Macintosh.
Its approximate street price will be $1,295.

For Windows and Macintosh

Both products feature digital/microprocessor controls, are EnergyStar and
MPR II compliant, and work with popular Windows graphics cards (with 1 Mb
of video memory) and standard Apple Macintosh and PowerMacintosh video.

Both products are also backed by a three year limited warranty.

Rotated to its portrait or "vertical" view, the Pivot 1700 matches the 8.5"
x 11 " proportions of the work users do most -- word processing, desktop
publishing, desktop faxing, e-mail, on-line services, the World Wide Web,
and document storage and retrieval. It provides the readable display of a
full page document not possible on conventional landscape-only 15" or 17"
monitors.

Conventional 15" and 17" monitors require users to continually scroll up
and down to see various portions of a document, or shrink it down to a
tiny full-page preview. In portrait view, the Pivot 1700's bigger than
life size 9.3" x 14.4" active page display area is about 20% taller than
that provided by a 20" monitor, and offers superior document viewing
because of its 1024 lines portrait resolution at 76 Hz (1280 lines at 76
Hz on the Pivot 1700 Professional).

Rotated to its landscape or "horizontal" view, the Pivot 1700 functions as
a high quality conventional 17" monitor, suitable for work like
spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, and desktop video.

"The bottom line is that our pivoting monitors -- these new 17" models and
our current 15" model -- are dollar-for-dollar simply the most flexible
displays people can buy for their Windows or Macintosh computers," said
Bruce Cummings, president and CEO of Portrait Display Labs. "The concept
is pretty simple: make the monitor pivot to match the work you do, rather
than you accommodate the limitations of a landscape-only display."

Competitive Pricing

Pricing for the new models also represents a change, according to Cummings.
"In the past, pivoting monitors sold by Portrait Display Labs and our
sister company Radius, Inc. were more expensive than other equivalent
quality, equivalent tube-size displays, simply because they cost more to
make," he explained. "With these new models, we're able to take advantage
of volume manufacturing techniques while using the highest quality tubes,
yokes, and electronics, and pass that savings on to our customers. In the
future, we intend to stay very price competitive with products from NEC,
Sony, and other quality monitor manufacturers, so we can offer a far
superior, more flexible product at no price premium."

Portrait Display Labs continues to offer its full page/pivoting Portrait/15
Plus 15" color monitor at an average street price of around $599. The
product was recently enhanced by the addition of new drivers giving it
1024 x 768 resolution at 76 Hz on Macintosh computers.

Portrait Display Labs, Inc. is the only supplier of color multi-frequency
portrait and pivoting monitors for Windows and Macintosh computers. The
products are based on proprietary technology enhanced from that originally
developed by Radius Inc. Headquartered in Pleasanton, California, the
company markets its products internationally through distributors,
dealers, system integrators, and direct sales.
