NEC ANNOUNCES SMP WINDOWS NT WORKSTATION FOR DESIGN AUTOMATION AND GRAPHICS
MARKETS

Provides 50% Application Level and System Performance Advantage Over
Pentium Systems at Half the Cost of UNIX/RISC Systems

Mountain View, CA, May 15, 1995 -- Strengthening its leadership position in
the mechanical CAD and high performance graphics markets, NEC Technologies
today announced a symmetrical multiprocessing workstation for Windows NT
with 50 percent higher floating point performance than Pentium-based
systems, and advanced performance graphics capabilities. The RISCstation
2200 delivers the industry's best price/performance solution.

Operating at 200 MHz, the RISCstation 2200 supports 1MB of L2 cache, memory
expandable to 512 MB, 2D and 3D Open GL graphics accelerator cards, open
PCI-based and EISA I/O bus architectures with industry standard integrated
I/O support using SCSI-2 and 10BaseT Ethernet, 16-Bit Business Audio, and
comes with Microsoft Windows NT Workstation.

"Running exclusively on Windows NT, the RISCstation 2200 is the ideal
platform for compute-intensive 2D and 3D applications such as Parametric
Technology Corporation's Pro/ENGINEER and Pro/JR. as well as animation and
location-based entertainment applications," said Al Reyes, product manager
of NEC's RISC NT group. "Windows NT's enhanced application environment and
multitasking features combined with optimized system features and floating
point advantages of the RISCstation 2200 enable the mechanical CAD and
graphics markets to minimize process time and run productivity and CAD
tools simultaneously, thereby increasing overall efficiency at affordable
prices."

New System Architecture

The RISCstation 2200 incorporates the NEC MultiRISC system architecture
that contributes to the systems' superior floating point performance,
reliability, expandability and high performance graphics capabilities.

The enhanced graphics capabilities come from the systems support for 2D and
3D Open GL graphics accelerator PCI cards working with companies such as
3Dlabs. Each card has been integrated into the workstation's overall
system architecture allowing for superior integration and optimization of
the operating systems drivers and APIs.

Data integrity and accuracy are ensured with the systems' ECC (error
correction code) memory.

System Expansion and Features

The RISCstation 2200 allows for easy expansion and upgradability with the
system's open, PCI-based I/O bus subsystem with integrated I/O support
using SCSI-2, 16-Bit Business Audio and 10Base-T Ethernet. Additional
features included with the workstation include NEC MultiSpin 4Xi CD-ROM
reader, 1.44 MB floppy, 1, 2 and 4 GB disk drives, SCSI DAT tape drives
and 16-Bit Business audio plus Windows NT Workstation.

Pricing and Configurations

Available through authorized resellers beginning in June, the
configurations available and their estimated street prices are as
follows:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
* 1 CPU, 16 MB RAM, No Disk                  $ 5,299

* 1 CPU, 64 MB RAM, 1 GB Disk, 3D Graphics   $10,874

* 1 CPU, 32 MB RAM, 2 GB Disk                $ 7,679

* 2 CPU, 32 MB RAM, 1 GB Disk                $ 9,654

NEC RISC Systems

NEC Technologies manufactures and markets RISC-based workstation and
servers that run exclusively on Windows NT and incorporate the MIPS VR4400
microprocessor -- the same platform on which Microsoft developed Windows
NT. The NEC RISC product family includes the RISCstation 2200, the
RISCstation 2000, the Express RISCserver, the RISCserver 2200 and the
RISCserver 4200.

All NEC RISC systems employ the MultiRISC architecture and come with a
three year limited warranty plus a variety of support options. NEC
Technologies is a subsidiary of NEC Corporation, the $35 billion leader in
computers, semiconductors and communications.

Parametric

"We expect our Windows NT business to increase significantly over the next
year and NEC will be a strategic partner in this business," said Olimpio
DeMarco, manager of strategic relationships of Parametric Technology
Corporation. "NEC's RISCstation 2200 provides a very compelling
price/performance platform for Parametric's Pro/JR. and other Pro/ENGINEER
applications that will help fuel our growth and market leadership in
mechanical design automation."

3Dlabs

"NEC is a key player in making accelerated 3D an integral part of the
Windows NT environment," said Osman Kent, president of 3Dlabs. "The MIPS
VR4400 can provide double the performance of other CPUs for 3D intensive
applications, and so the RISCstation 2200 will be an ideal platform for
many 3D applications looking for a high performance alternative to UNIX.
We are proud and excited that NEC chose 3Dlabs and GLINT for this new
range of RISC workstations, which further consolidates 3Dlabs position as
the premier silicon vendor for professional class 3D graphics."

Microsoft

"The mechanical CAD market and other engineering disciplines has been one
of the largest markets for Windows NT since its release last fall," said
Matt Ragen, Windows NT Workstation product manager. "The combination of
NEC's RUSC-based workstations and Windows NT provides an attractive
price/performance solution for customers in the engineering market."
