NEC TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCES A FOUR-WAY SYMMETRICAL MULTIPROCESSING WORKGROUP
SERVER FOR MICROSOFT BACKOFFICE

Mountain View, CA, May 15, 1995 -- Building on its commitment to deliver
leadership price/performance server solutions for Microsoft Windows NT
Server and BackOffice, NEC Technologies today announced the RlSCserver
4200, a four CPU symmetrical multiprocessing server for database
transaction processing, document management and decision support that
provides advanced scalability, reliability and availability.

Operating at 200 MHz in each of the four processors, the RISCserver 4200
comes with 2MB of high speed level 2 cache, a primary level cache twice
the size of competitors with similar priced systems, a high performance
PCI-bus, 32-bit high performance RAID capability, and error correction
code (ECC) memory scheme as well as Microsoft Windows NT Server.

"The RISCserver 4200 is the obvious choice for those who require fast
processing of complex database queries, data analysis and document images
at affordable prices," said Tony Levy, director of product marketing of
NEC's RISC Windows NT group. "It delivers the performance, reliability and
scalability that today's distributed database computing environment
demands."

BackOffice

"NEC's RISC-based servers complement the solutions that each component of
BackOffice delivers," said Rich Tong, general manager of Microsoft' s
business systems division. "For example, NEC's RISCserver 4200 and
Microsoft SQL Server 6.0 provides Windows NT customers with enhanced
database solutions in replication, branch decision support and OLTP
environments. "

Document Management Solution

Optimizing the latest document imaging and management software such as
Vantage Technologies document management technology suite, the RISCserver
4200 is designed to accelerate the ease and shift to tomorrow's paperless
office. Capturing information quickly, the RISCserver 4200 can easily
transform libraries of documents that are now paper-based into accessible
electronic information. It can manage these electronic documents using
access authorization, check/in check out and version authoring software.

Features

NEC's RISCserver 4200 comes standard with four 200 MHz processors; an open,
industry standard PCI-based I/O bus subsystem; integrated I/O support
using SCSI-2 and Ethernet; 2MB of high speed cache; and Windows NT
Server.

Its new MultiRISC Plus architecture includes the MIPS VR4400 microprocessor
that has a five-stage super pipeline design that enables multiple
instruction execution and is the third-generation of 64-bit architecture
that optimizes data processing and minimizes faults. The RISCserver 4200
also includes an ECC memory scheme for complete data integrity and 32-bit
high performance RAID capability to ensure data is accurately written to
disk. Its advanced hotswap capability enables users to change hard drives
and automatically reconfigures the system to incorporate the new component
without any significant downtime.

Expansion Options

Additional processing power can be added by plugging in CPU modules. To
expedite the management of document management and other applications, the
RISCserver 4200 can be enhanced by adding options such as fast 7200 RPM
2GB and a storage cabinet with 4GB SCSI-2 hard drives; three 5.25 inch
removable media devices and eight 3.5 inch hard drives.

Pricing and Configurations

Available through authorized resellers beginning in June, the RISCserver
4200 configurations and estimated street prices are as follows:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
* 2 CPU, 64 MB RAM, 2 GB HDD without RAID    $24,734

---------------------------------------------------------------------

NEC RISC Systems

NEC Technologies manufactures and markets RISC-based workstation and
servers that run exclusively on Windows NT and incorporate the MIPS VR4400
microprocessor -- the same platform on which Microsoft developed Windows
NT. The NEC RISC product family includes the RISCstation 2200, the
RISCstation 2000, the Express RISCserver, the RISCserver 2200 and the
RISCserver 4200.

All NEC RISC systems employ the MultiRISC architecture and come with a
three year limited warranty plus a variety of support options. NEC
Technologies is a subsidiary of NEC Corporation, the $35 billion leader in
computers, semiconductors and communications.
