Microsoft Announces Availability of Windows NT Server 3.51 And Windows NT
Workstation 3.51

Product Update Adds Support for the PowerPC Platform

REDMOND, Wash.--June 12, 1995--Microsofl Corp. today announced the
availability of the Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server operating
systems version 3.51. This new release includes support for PowerPC-based
systems along with other customer-requested features. Windows NT Server
3.51 now includes a tool to help customers manage Client Access Licenses
for Microsoft BackOffice products and a utility that enables
over-the-network installation of the Windows 95 operating system. Windows
NT Workstation 3.51 provides support for Windows 95-compatible
applications, popular fax software, a replaceable Winlogon screen and
additional devices including PCMCIA.

PowerPC Becomes the Fourth Platform Supported by Windows NT

Windows NT Server 3.51 and Windows NT Workstation 3.51 are the first
operating systems to provide the same feature and API set across four
hardware platforms: Intel, Alpha AXP, MIPS and PowerPC, giving customers
unprecedented hardware flexibility.

"PowerPC systems running Windows NT 3.51 offer outstanding functionality,
compatibility and price/performance," said Anne-Marie Larkin, vice
president of the technical staff and director, Motorola Software
Engineering. "This powerful system/software combination is an attractive
choice for running all popular applications and is rapidly becoming a
preferred platform for high-volume, high-performance computing for the
desktop."

Hardware vendors planning to sell Windows NT on the PowerPC include
FirePower Systems, IBM Corp., IPC Technologies, Motorola Computer Group
and Reply Corp.

During the next few months, Microsoft plans to release desktop
applications, development tools, and business systems products for the
PowerPC, including Microsoft Excel and Word, the Visual C++ development
system and Microsoft Test, and SNA Server. Many third-party vendors also
plan to release applications for Windows NT Server and Workstation for the
PowerPC.

Windows NT Server 3.51 Expands Network Administration Tools

Windows NT Server 3.51 contains a new built-in licensing tool, License
Manager, which enables administrators to manage and track Client Access
Licenses throughout the enterprise. License Manager allows customers to
choose a licensing option--per server is now available in addition to per
client--and helps alert them about when to purchase additional Client
Access Licenses. While many customers find per-client licensing to be the
most efficient choice, per server (concurrent) licensing works well for
customers with special use servers, such as communication and Internet
servers, as well as occasionally used servers.

"Tracking and managing licenses is a difficult challenge for any
organization," said J. Briscoe Stephens, advanced science information
systems coordinator at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. "With
Windows NT Server 3.51, we have a flexible licensing model as well as
tools that greatly reduce the time involved to be compliant."

Windows NT Server 3.51 also contains the upgraded Network Client
Administrator utility, making it easier for customers to deploy Windows 95
when it becomes available. The expanded utility allows administrators to
create a boot disk to install Windows 95 over the network.

Windows NT Workstation 3.51 Offers Support for Windows 95-Based
Applications and 16-Bit Fax

Windows NT Workstation 3.51 provides support for Windows 95 Common Controls
and Dialogs. This support allows 32-bit applications designed for the
Windows 95 operating system to be deployed across both the Windows 95 and
Windows NT platforms with a consistent interface.

Users of Windows NT Workstation 3.51 can now benefit from support for
16-bit fax applications: Delrina WinFax PRO 4.0 and Delrina WinFax Lite,
and broader device support including PCMCIA. In addition, Windows NT
Workstation 3.51 includes a replaceable Winlogon screen that allows
alternate security devices such as ATM cards to be used to log on to
machines running the operating system. Both Windows NT Workstation and
Windows Server 3.51 also include NTFS file compression.

Pricing and Availability

The product is currently being shipped to distributors throughout the
United States and Canada. The international English version of Windows NT
3.51 is shipping simultaneously, and Europe will begin receiving the
product in July. Pricing and packaging of the product remain unchanged
from version 3.5. Many customers choose the Network Value Pak, which costs
$999 for a server license and ten Client Access Licenses. A "Step-Up" to
Windows NT Server 3.51 is available to current customers of Windows NT
Server 3.5 for approximately $69.95 per server license. No additional
Client Access License fees are required, provided a Client Access License
has already been purchased for each client accessing the system. For
customers of Windows NT Workstation 3.5, a "Step-Up" is available for
approximately $19.95 for CD-ROM media and approximately $49.95 for
3.5-inch media. Customers on maintenance agreements with Microsoft will
receive the upgrade for no-charge. Customers who purchased Windows NT
Server or Workstation 3.5 after April 15, 1995, will receive a no-charge
upgrade to version 3.51.
