MountainGate Introduces New Removable Hard Disk Systems

Stampede Provides Up To 400 GB Per SCSI Bus

Los Angeles, CA -- June 5, 1995 -- MountainGate Data Systems, Inc., today
announced the Stampede, a new line of high-capacity, removable and
transportable storage systems capable of storing up to 400 gigabytes (GB)
of data on a single SCSI bus. Easily configurable, the Stampede is a
versatile solution that allows users to employ any combination of 3.5" and
5.25" drives within a single docking station. The new product line is
designed to meet the needs of multimedia, electronic prepress, desktop
publishing, audio/video editing, and general business professionals who
demand absolute data security and the flexibility to work with a variety
of drive formats and fully expandable storage capacities.

According to Amos Deacon, product manager at MountainGate, "Stampede was
designed to meet the needs of increasingly sophisticated consumers. With
Stampede, users can easily configure their systems with either 3.5" and
5.25" drives and the capacity for on-line and near on-line storage is
almost unlimited." Adds Deacon, "These features combined with high-speed
access times and transfer rates ensure reliability and provide an
affordable, high-performance alternative."

High Capacity

Ideal for on-line and near on-line storage requirements of electronic
prepress and desktop publishing professionals, Stampede drives are
available in capacities of 1.0 GB, 1.7 GB, 2.1 GB, 4.2 GB, and 9.0 GB. For
increased usability, Stampede is available with a SCSI expander device --
a Logical Unit Translator (LUT). When used with the LUT, each SCSI address
is capable of accommodating over 63 GB of data. For professionals working
with larger amounts of data, Stampede docking stations can also be daisy
chained together. As a result, MountainGate Stampede systems can offer
over 400 GB of removable hard drive storage capacity per SCSI bus.

Flexibility

Stampede is available in 2-bay, 4-bay, and 8-bay desktop docking stations,
an 8-bay deskside pedestal and an 8-bay rack mount configuration. The
product is designed to offer user-friendly features designed to
accommodate the increased demands of business and multimedia
professionals. To provide the highest levels of flexibility, Stampede is
configured to allow users to chose any combination of 3.5" or 5.25"
removable drives within Stampede's docking station. Within each drive
module, users can insert whichever drive is demanded. For customers who
require the versatility of working with multiple drive formats in a single
station, Stampede provides seamless performance without requiring the user
to arrange separate stations for 3.5" or 5.25" formats. The product is
also designed so that each drive module can accommodate either a Fast
SCSI-2 (singled ended or differential) hard drive or Fast and Wide SCSI-2
(single ended or differential) hard drive.

Performance and Reliability Features

Stampede drives offer outstanding hard disk performance with access times
as fast as 8 milliseconds and transfer rates up to 20MB/sec. The product
also supports a MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) of up to 800,000 hours
ensuring the highest levels of data integrity.

Stampede drive modules are also hot swappable and thus allow users to
replace or switch drives without shutting the entire system down. Each
drive also has its own activity and power indicator, making it easy for
users to see when it is safe to remove the drive. The new line
incorporates dual redundant auto ranging power supplies and dual redundant
cooling systems that help to ensure reliable, trouble-free operation.
Stampede's drive interface connectors are certified up to 25,000 cycles
(insertions), ensuring a long life cycle without loss of data or decrease
in performance.

Pricing and Availability

Stampede is compatible with most major computing systems, including the
Macintosh, PC, Power PC, Silicon Graphics, Sun SPARC, IBM RS 6000, and HP
workstations. Stampede storage systems are available for a suggested list
price of $ 1750 for the 8-bay rack mount docking station. Removable module
prices are dependent on drive capacities and requirements. All Stampede
drives and systems are designed to be forward compatible with future drive
modules offering larger capacities and higher performance. The product is
backed by a two-year warranty that includes an exclusive next-day
replacement guarantee. For sales and distribution information, contact
