Macromedia Announces Director Upgrade Optimized for Pentium-Class
Computers

Leading Multimedia Authoring Software Also Exploits Microsoft WinG Speed

COMDEX, Atlanta, GA -- April 24, 1995, --Today Macromedia, Inc., the leader
in multimedia and digital arts software, announced a new version of
Director for Windows, the industry-leading multimedia authoring software,
optimized for the fast performance and graphics capabilities of
Pentium-class computers. Award-winning Macromedia Director lets multimedia
developers combine video, sound, animation and text into a single dazzling
presentation.

Director 4.0.4 also takes advantage of Microsoft's WinG software to
dramatically boost the speed of action sequences and games on personal
computers. Director 4.0.4 offers improved screen drawing speeds when used
with video cards that tap into WinG's performance.

According to Macromedia senior product manager David How, "This new release
allows Director users to bring faster, more exciting action to their
multimedia titles and presentations for Pentium-class computers. At
Macromedia, our goal is to let multimedia developers create a title once
and deliver it to the broadest possible audience, whether their playback
device is a computer or set-top box."

"At Microsoft, we see multimedia as an important and growing market. The
multimedia support advancements in Windows 95 enable multimedia developers
to create better and faster multimedia titles for end-users," said David
Britton, group manager, multimedia, for the personal systems division at
Microsoft. "We are pleased that Macromedia is one of the first companies
to take advantage of this technology."

When run on a Pentium-class computer, the new version of Director can
display twice as many frames per second, increasing from 60 to 120, so
that action sequences are twice as fast. In addition to optimizing
performance, Director 4.0.4 includes improvements on DIB (Device
Independent Bitmap) import, as well as copy, paste and link operations.

Director 4.0.4 now supports embedded and linked QuickTime compressed PICT
files (JPEG), so that developers can display high-quality, high-resolution
files while using minimal disk space. Sound mixing has also been enhanced.
Users can now mix sounds with different sampling rates (e.g., 11.025,
22.05, and 44.1 KHz) and various sample sizes (e.g., 8-bit and 16-bit).
Sounds can be copied into the Clipboard and easily pasted into other
files.

Macromedia Director has become the industry standard for multimedia
authoring tools. The program lets users easily integrate elements such as
text, graphics, digital video, sound and animation, while providing
interactivity with Lingo, Director's built-in, object-oriented scripting
language. Director's binary compatible file format allows developers to
create files that run on personal computers running Windows, 68000-based
Macintoshes, and Power Macintoshes.

Director 4.0.4 is now available for a suggested retail price of U.S. $1195.
