MAXTOR ANNOUNCES DURANGO FAMILY OF 7000 SERIES DRIVES FOR DESKTOP PC
MARKET

New Industry-Leading Enhanced IDE, 3.5" Drives Feature 1.6GB of Capacity

SAN JOSE, CALIF.--May 30, 1995--Maxtor Corporation (NASDAQ: MXTR), the only
company focused exclusively on providing disk drives for the personal
computer (PC) industry, today announced the addition of the Durango Family
to its 7000 Series of 3.5-inch Enhanced IDE (EIDE) disk drives for desktop
PCs. Available in capacities of 541 megabytes (MBs), 1.0 gigabytes (GBs)
and 1.6 GBs, the new Durango Family of drives meets the increasing storage
demands of the desktop PC market, while reinforcing the position of
Maxtor's 7000 Series product line as one of the benchmarks for value in
the industry.

"The preferred capacity for PCs with minimum storage requirements will very
shortly be 500MBs -- particularly after the acceptance of Windows '95
later this year," said Barbara Nelson, Maxtor vice president of marketing.
"We believe that 1.6GBs will quickly become the disk drive capacity of
choice for power-users as they increasingly down-load information from
Internet services and operate popular, storage-intensive multimedia
applications. With the volume shipment of our Durango 71626AP this
quarter, Maxtor is one of the few manufacturers to offer the PC industry a
cost-effective disk drive above 1.0 GBs."

Maxtor currently has Durango Family qualification units at six of the top
10 PC manufacturers in the world. Maxtor has announced 10 new products in
the 7000 Series in the past nine months and now provides one of the
broadest lines of PC drives available. 7000 Series drives are now
available in capacities of 270, 425, 541 and 850MBs, and 1.0, 1.2 and
1.6GBs.

"Our objective is to aggressively apply proven technologies in our products
in order to yield the best lifetime cost-of-ownership specifically for the
desktop PC market," said Brian Smith, Maxtor's vice president of 7000
Series products. "To attain this goal, Maxtor has worked extensively with
key OEMs and resellers to define the storage requirements of PC customers.
After looking at all the elements of cost-of-ownership, such as capacity,
performance, price, compatibility, reliability and support, we know that
Maxtor's value-engineered 7000 Series is best-in-class."

"These products strike a balance between cost and performance for PC-class
Winchester disk drive storage, effectively allowing Maxtor to cast a 'wide
net' in attracting a broad range of desktop PC customers," said Crawford
Del Prete, director, IDC Storage Research.

Durango Family drives offer industry leading ATA disk areal density of 400
M/Bits per square inch through an innovative refinement of thin film head
technology called proximity recording. Proximity recording reduces head
flying height, fundamentally improving head/media interface signal
quality. "The disk drive industry has struggled with the introduction of
MR head and PRML channel technology," said Smith. "Thin film head
proximity recording has enabled Maxtor to use a proven peak detection
read/write channel in Durango Family products. This allows us to delay the
application of MR head and PRML channel technology in future
value-engineered products until the required cost and availability targets
have been met."

Maxtor, in partnership with key suppliers, is a pioneer in the use of thin
film head proximity recording. This technology is now being embraced by
other disk drive manufacturers.

Durango Family products feature an EIDE interface capable of transferring
data at PIO Mode 4 or DMA Mode 2 (16.6 MB/sec). Maxtor's EIDE interface is
compliant with the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) ATA-2
specification and includes Logical Block Addressing capability to break
the 528MB PC capacity barrier. The Durango Family also features custom
on-the-fly Error Correction Code logic (capable of correcting multiple
error bursts without performance loss), and MaxCache, Maxtor's workload
sensitive buffer that maximizes throughput for demanding sequential
operations. The drives feature low power consumption and ATA power saving
commands that support EPA Energy Star "Green PC" standards.

The Durango Family design is leveraged directly from existing members of
the 7000 Series. These HDDs provide leadership head media interface
durability with a start/stop specification that exceeds 50,000 cycles, as
well as an improved non-contact actuator latch to increase reliability
under extreme non-operating shock. In addition, the 1.0GB Durango 71084 is
available in two different buffer sizes -- the larger offering improved
seek times for applications demanding increased levels of performance.

All 7000 Series drives are backed by Maxtor's industry-leading No Quibble
Service program which offers customers worldwide, including end-users, the
most comprehensive service solutions in the disk drive industry.

Volume production of the Durango Family is planned for June, 1995.
Single-unit OEM evaluation quantities are priced at $250 for the 500MB
version, $350 for the 1.0GB version and $500 for the 1.6GB version. These
products will be available in retail and distribution channels in June,
1995.
