J&L Information Systems Announces ChatPower-Plus

A Revolutionary Redundant Power Supply System

An upgradeable and truly hot swappable Fault Tolerant Power Supply System
that reduces dramatically the power required for achieving complete
redundancy in a multi-processor rack mounted environment.

New York, June 19th. 1995 -- J&L Information Systems a division of Astro
Sciences Corporation, a leading manufacturer of communications and
applications servers, announced today the introduction of their
revolutionary ChatPower-Plus a truly "no tools required, hot swappable"
redundant power supply system for their family of award winning
ChatterBox/NRS and ChatExpress communication and applications servers.
With the release of ChatPower-Plus, J&L continues its leadership role in
the development of redundant power supply systems for the rackmounted
applications and communications server market.

Existing redundant power supply systems leave no room for power expansion
or are intrinsically wasteful in terms of the power they dissipate, as
each has to be capable of running the total J&L system if one fails and
are usually in a powered up mode. J&L's range of rackmounted applications
servers can, at any time have up to 56 processors in a single 19" rack
cabinet. Managing our customers ever changing power requirements and still
offer redundancy evolved the ChatPowerPlus. The ChatPower-Plus addresses
these issues by utilizing 'N+1' technology, to provide support means for
providing full power redundancy to any size J&L rack-mounted system. The
ChatPowerPlus comprises 14 processor card cage, a metal chassis housing
four cooling fans, slots for up to four hot swappable 350 watt power
supply modules, and a disk cage. The disk cage can be populated with up to
five 3-l/2" devices or three 5-1/4" devices. These can be floppy or hard
drives, tape units, CDROM's, etc. All peripheral units can be connected to
any of the ChatterBox/NRS processing units and can be used for a variety
of tasks including Tape Backup or RAID storage. The ChatPower-Plus can be
installed in any 19" rack mount system and can offer full power redundancy
for up to four fully configured card cages.

To use ChatPower-Plus you simply calculate the power requirements of your
J&L card cages(s) J&L supplies a power consumption table on diskette that
calculates it for you. Then install one more power module than the system
requires and you have 100% redundancy without 100% duplication of power
resources. If a power module fails the system will emit a tone to warn
users of the failure and the remaining module(s) will load balance and the
systems will continue as if nothing had happened. The user then simply
notes which power module light is on, turn a lever remove the module and
replace it with a spare module, without disturbing the system or the
network.

Pricing starts at $2,995.00 for a ChatPower-Plus assembly with a single 350
Watt power module and $995 for each subsequent module. First shipments are
slated for July 1995.
