ISI'S ELECTRONIC LIBRARY PROTOTYPE INCORPORATES LOTUS NOTES

Philadelphia, PA, U.S.A.--June 20, 1995--The Institute for Scientific
Information (ISI) today announced that it will incorporate Lotus Notes in
its Electronic Library Project initiative. Under this initiative, a
prototype is being developed that uses Lotus Notes as the client. Lotus
Notes is the leading client/server platform for developing and deploying
groupware applications.

ISI's Electronic Library Project was first announced in August 1994. The
prototype consists of Current Contents/Life Sciences, providing tables of
contents, bibliographic data, and abstracts for approximately 1,350
scholarly journals, with the addition of the full images of those articles
for which publishers have agreed to allow electronic storage and delivery.
Lotus Notes Desktop software will be used by pilot sites at the eight
locations in North America and Europe which have agreed to test the
prototype.

"This relationship," said Frank Licata, Senior Vice President, Systems and
Technology, ISI, "is a very positive step for ISI's Electronic Library
Project. Lotus Development Corporation's groupware standard is the ideal
platform to provide users with access to large amounts of full-imaged data
and the capabilities to track usage statistics. It has been easily
integrated into ISI's prototype."

"Lotus Notes' flexibility will enhance the applications and testing
capabilities of this critical project," continued Licata. "It provides a
tool that will operate efficiently and still provide the level of security
needed for the content providers - the journal publishers. n

Don Bulens, Lotus Director of Partner Programs, stated "We are excited to
be working with ISI as business partners. We understand that ISI has been
a leading provider of scholarly information to the worldwide research
community."

"ISI's broad-based innovative project to bring the most critical
information to the research community strengthens Lotus' goal of providing
easy-to-use workgroup applications to business and academic communities
worldwide," continued Bulens.

All aspects of the Institute for Scientific Information's prototype have
been designed by ISI and its partners in this venture. International
Business Machines (IBM) offers the technical expertise and components for
storage, retrieval, and delivery of information in a distributed
environment which will seamlessly plug into various existing library
WAN/LAN topologies.

Over 360 publishers, representing the 1,350 journals indexed in Current
Contents/Life Sciences, have been invited to participate in this venture.
Eight pilot sites will test the prototype. The pilot sites are: Brookhaven
National Laboratory, Lehigh University, The New York Public Library,
Purdue University, SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceutical R&D, Thomas Jefferson
University, University College London, and Glaxo Research and Development,
Ltd.

The Institute for Scientific Information has been publishing current
awareness products for more than thirty-five years. ISI also produces
cited reference products such as the Science Citation Index. The company
is headquartered in Philadelphia, PA, U.S.A. and has offices throughout
the world.
