Map'n'Go named Best New Use of a Computer by Software Publishers
Association

Map'n'Go, a sophisticated multimedia travel planning program that takes the
guesswork out of planning trips, won the title "Best New Use of a
Computer" in the Software Publishers Association's annual Excellence in
Software Awards, held recently in San Diego.

The awards, which are dubbed the Codies in a reference to the code that
makes up software, are the software industry "Oscars" and are voted on by
members of the SPA. DeLorme was the only small software publisher to win a
major award. Other awards presented during the black-tie ceremony in San
Diego went to Broderbund Software, Microsoft, IBM, Intuit, and Adobe.

According to Forrest Barberi of Davidson & Associates, who made the
presentation, the award for Best New Use of a Computer signifies the
ultimate in technological innovation and development - a product that
helps redefine the software industry. In winning the award, Map'n'Go edged
out such competitors as The Haldeman Diaries, by Sony Imagesoft; Gift
Maker, by Maxis; Kid Pix Studio, by Broderbund; Star Trek: The Next
Generation, by Simon and Schuster Interactive; and Monty Python's Complete
Waste of Time, by 7th Level.

Earlier this year, Map'n'Go was named the "CD-ROM Title of the Year" by
CD-ROM Professional Magazine.

Map'n'Go has also found immediate acceptance with consumers - selling more
than 100,000 copies in its first three months on the market, and joining
the ranks of the most successful multimedia titles ever launched.

Map'n'Go combines an incredibly comprehensive map database with intelligent
routing, exceptional print capabilities, and a listing of more than 31,000
hotels, inns, campgrounds, restaurants, and points of interest throughout
the US, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Map'n'Go is the only travel
planning software that allows users to print detailed maps of their trips
oriented in the correct direction of travel. It also lets them add hotels
and other stopping points to their printed Travel Plan, allowing them to
create a customized guide to follow.

In addition, the program comes with a detailed 128-page North America road
atlas that is included to give users a broader perspective and sense of
context of their travels.

Map'n'Go was released last summer, and is widely available in retail
software stores and catalogs and in many bookstores. The program does not
carry a manufacturer's suggested retail price; its average street price is
around $39. From now through the end of July, a $10 manufacturer's rebate
is available on retail purchases of Map'n'Go.

Map'n'Go, which operates in Windows, helps both business and pleasure
travelers navigate virtually anywhere on the continent. In keeping with
DeLorme's tradition of providing the most comprehensive mapping
information available, Map'n'Go includes a network of more than 1 million
miles of roads - almost twice that of any other computer travel planning
program. The maps also show national and state park boundaries, streams,
lakes, and rivers; topographic detail; land cover, such as swamps, salt
pans, mines, etc.; airports; and other man-made features, such as many
sports stadiums, museums, and universities.

The program allows users to determine the starting and ending points of a
journey from among more than 200,000 towns, cities, or airports, and
specify up to 50 intermediate stops along the way. It allows them to set
preferences for the type and speed limits of the roads on which they wish
to travel. Then, at their command, Map'n'Go calculates either the shortest
or quickest route to the user's destination, or a route that factors in
the user's preferences.

A detailed screen lays out all the segments of the journey, including the
distance (in miles or kilometers) of each segment, the total distance, and
the estimated driving time.

The user can also scroll along the proposed route on the computer screen,
calling up information about hotels, inns, campgrounds, and restaurants
along the way, which can then be added to the itinerary.

The program features photos and narrated descriptions of thousands of
important historical, cultural, and geographical sites in North America.
Map'n'Go will bring up references to these points of interest - amusement
parks, museums, battlefields, travel information offices, etc. within
five, 10, 20, or even 50 miles of the proposed route. The program provides
narrated information about these points of interest and, often, a photo as
well. These points of interest can be inspected individually, or Map'n'Go
can put together a slide show of interesting sights all along the user's
proposed route.

Once the trip has been completely planned on the computer, Map'n'Go will
print out a detailed Travel Plan of the entire trip, with maps oriented in
the correct direction of travel. The Map'n'Go Travel Plan includes
complete directions, distances for each segment, the total distance and
driving time, as well as any intermediate stops, hotels, and points of
interest along the way that the user has added to the itinerary.

System requirements for Map'n'Go include an IBM-compatible 386 or higher
computer, CDROM drive, VGA graphics, mouse, Microsoft Windows 3.1 or
higher, DOS 4.01 or higher, 4 MB RAM, 3 MB hard-drive space. A sound card
is optional.
