CHINON TO SHIP ES-3000

Advanced Color Digital Camera Features 3x Power Zoom, Removable Flash Card
Memory and Out-Of-The-Box PC/MAC Compatibility

June 20, 1995 -- (PC EXPO, NEW YORK) -- Chinon America Inc., one of the
world's leading manufacturers of CD-ROM drives and other computer
peripherals, has announced it will ship the ES-3000, a 24-bit, multi IR
beam, auto-focusing, color digital camera designed to work with PC or
Macintosh formats, in July, 1995. "From the user's standpoint, the Chinon
ES-3000 operates just like a standard 35mm camera, but instead of typical
film, it digitizes pictures, which can be uploaded online or used in
multimedia presentations, publishing projects that require portable image
acquisition and other digital imaging applications," said Scott Elrich,
marketing manager.

"The explosion of sales for CD-ROM drives and other multimedia peripherals
indicates digital storage and display of information will eventually
replace most forms of analog equipment, including cameras," said Elrich.
"The ES-3000 represents yet another advancement in this rapidly developing
product category. It combines unique features traditionally found only on
standard 35mm cameras, with the advantages of removable memory and instant
PC or Mac compatibility."

Images can be captured in Super Fine (640 x 480 with lossless compression),
Fine (640 x 480 with lossey compression) and Normal (320 x 240) resolution
modes. Although the camera's 1 MB of built-in memory can provide a maximum
of 40 images, its ability to accept optional flash memory cards up to 16
MB in capacity allows it to store an unprecedented 689 possible images,
uploadable to a PC or Mac via a serial cable.

A Windows-compatible image acquisition and camera control program and a
TWAIN-compatible utility, for acquiring images within a favorite graphics
program, are included for the PC. The ES-3000 also comes with a
Macintosh-compatible image acquisition and camera control software utility
and a plug-in module for Adobe Photoshop.

Applications Range from Online Publishing to Multimedia Presentations

Images are output in 24-bit color, which makes the ES-3000 useful in a
multitude of applications. "With the number of Internet users growing by
hundreds of thousands every month, online publishing is an exploding
field. The ES-3000 is perfect for collecting digitized images which can be
stored and transferred quickly and efficiently,'' said Elrich. "The
camera's 24-bit technology provides a viable solution for individuals who
want to utilize the online medium's photographic capabilities to the
fullest extent."

Other applications for the ES-3000 include multimedia presentations, image
databasing, photojournalism and other functions of electronic publishing
necessary for versatile, truly portable image acquisition.

The ES-3000 offers other features that allow more versatility in
image-capture, including a flash with three modes: Sensor Flash, Auto
Flash and No Flash. The shutter speed varies from one-sixth to one-three
hundredth of a second, utilizing a programmed mechanical shutter and
programmed AE exposure. There also is a manual and auto zoom control,
multibeam automatic focusing system, single beam AF mode, macro mode and a
built-in, ten-second self-timer.

In addition, an easy-to-use LED display on the ES-3000 indicates the number
of exposures available, AF mode, battery level, resolution mode, date
transfer mark, erase mark, memory card status, auto zoom mark and close
distance warning.

The ES-3000 operates on four AA size NiCad batteries. An optional AC
adapter also is available in the package. The camera is 5 7/8 x 4 1/8 x 2
7/16 inches and weighs 18 1/2 ounces, not including batteries. The ES-3000
is believed to be the first digital camera of its kind for less than $
1,000. Chinon will begin shipping the ES-3000 in July with everything
needed to use on either a PC or Macintosh, including serial cables and
software.
