BROTHER LAUNCHES A 12 PPM, 600 DPI LASER PRINTER FOR THE SMALL
BUSINESS/PROFESSIONAL PRINTING MARKET

- Superior Speed, True 600 DPI Resolution and Versatile Paper Handling
Addresses Unmet Needs of Business Productivity Printing Market-

SOMERSET, NJ, (May 1, 1995) - Brother International Corporation today
announced the HL-960 --the first 12 page-per-minute (ppm), 600
dots-per-inch (dpi) printer to address the unmet needs of the growing
Business/Professional printing market. The HL-960 is designed for today's
demanding professional who needs high quality output, versatile paper
handling and the ability to effortlessly handle complex printing needs -
at an affordable price. Product will ship in early May, 1995.

"Brother has seen a significant market segment emerging," says John
Wandishin, Director of Marketing for Printer Products at Brother. "In the
past you had to make a choice when buying a 600 DPI laser printer - an
affordable price tag with a slow 4 page per minute speed or spend about
40% more for a fast 12 page per minute unit. The HL-960 has changed all
that. This printer offers high quality, broader paper handling
capabilities and ease of use - at a price tag under $1,000."

The many features and design of the HL-960 make it equally appropriate for
single or multi-user environments. Standard, leading edge features include
600 dpi resolution, 12 page per minute print speed, patented automatic
emulation switching, 60 resident fonts, 11 resident bar codes, high speed
bi-directional parallel and serial ports, a PCMCIA Type III slot, 600 dpi
resolution, automatic interface switching and data compression.

Advanced Technology and Compatibility

The HL-960 features the very reliable Brother print engine which produces
output of near typeset quality. Sharp, crisp text and well-defined
graphics are a result of its 600 dpi resolution. The HL-960 emulates the
Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4 (PCL5e with HPGL/2), IBM Proprinter XL and
Epson FX-850, supporting virtually every popular software package in
today's marketplace.

Patented automatic emulation switching is a productivity and
auto-intelligence feature of the HL-960. It can automatically sense and
adjust to which type of data it is receiving among its PCL5e, HPGL, IBM
Proprinter XL, and Epson FX-850 standard emulations.

In addition to a high speed RS-232C serial port, the HL-960 comes standard
with a high speed, bidirectional, Centronics parallel port which allows
the printer to send and receive printer status messages.

An important productivity advantage of the HL-960 is its auto interface
selection feature. The HL-960 can automatically sense the input signal
that it is receiving and select the proper port.

Both auto-intelligence features mentioned above minimize manual user
interaction and spare end-users an extra trip to the printer to adjust the
control panel. These are especially useful in multiuser environments where
unique user needs require various printer adjustments.

Advanced, High Capacity Paper Handling; Duplex Option

The printer comes standard with an adjustable 150 sheet, multi-purpose
paper tray and a 500 sheet adjustable-size paper drawer that can
accommodate letter, legal, A4, A5, A6, B5, B6, executive, envelope and
transparency stock. Since the adjustable drawer can accommodate multiple
paper sizes and stock, it eliminates the added expense of additional size
specific paper trays. An optional, adjustable 500 sheet second paper
drawer (LT-1200, SRP $349) can be linked to the standard tray to handle
longer print runs and/or different paper sizes and types.

To handle more sophisticated two sided printing requirements, while at the
same time cutting paper consumption in half, the HL-960 can accommodate an
end-user installable duplex option (DX-1200, SRP$549.) This small,
end-user installable, low profile option easily attaches to the rear of
the HL-960.

PCMCIA Type III Support

Unlike the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4, the Brother HL-960 has a standard
PCMCIA slot. This slot accepts commercially available Type III cards
ranging from flash memory to hard drives (up to 120MB) to save often used
forms, fonts, and data.

Fast Printing Speed

The HL-960's 12 page-per-minute rated engine offers the end-user 100% more
output speed than the more common 6 page-per-minute engine printers in the
same price class. To quickly and efficiently handle demanding graphics,
the HL-960 is powered by a 20 MHz IDT RISC microprocessor. This, in
combination with the HL-960's automatic data compression technology,
allows it to easily handle both sophisticated graphics and text
applications.

Incorporated into each HL-960 printer is a proprietary Brother technology
referred to as advanced, automatic Data Compression that works with all
graphics applications. This feature operates transparently and requires no
user interaction. Data Compression reduces a file's size while maintaining
no loss of data.

Each HL-960 comes with a diskette containing an optimized Windows printer
driver.

The HL-960's selectable Quick Reprint feature via the control panel allows
the reprinting of the last printed page directly by the printer without
the need to download the data again from the personal computer.

Wide Font and Memory Selection

The HL-960 comes with 60 fonts - the most in its printer class - which
includes a combination of 8 bit map and 52 scalable (Intellifont
compatible and TrueType compatible) fonts.

Another unique feature is the inclusion of 11 resident bar codes (UPC-A,
UPC-E, Code 128, EAN-8, EAN-13, EAN-128, Code 3 of 9, Interleaved 2 of 5,
CODABAR, ISBN and POSTNET).

The printer comes with one Hewlett-Packard-compatible font cartridge slot
which can accommodate a number of industry standard font cartridges.

The HL-960 has 2 MB of RAM standard. Expansion up to 26 MB of total on
board memory is easily achieved by adding user installable, industry
standard SIMMs directly to the controller board. Memory upgrade options
available are: the MS-1, a 1 megabyte SIMM ($75 SRP); the MS-2 ($ 139
SRP), a 2 megabyte SIMM, the MS-4 ($215 SRP), a 4 megabyte SIMM, and the
MS-8 ($399 SRP), an 8 megabyte SIMM.

Adjustable Input Buffer and Page Protection features can be selected to
allow users to better manage available memory and ensure complete document
printing.

Uses Industry Standard One-Piece, Microfine Toner Cartridge

The HL-960 Series uses the industry-standard, one piece EP-ED microfine
toner cartridge (R74-1004, SRP $149.) This cartridge is widely available
from various resellers nationwide and is known for its easy, clean-hands
installation. The toner is rated for 6,000 pages at 5% coverage.

Since most users print multiple drafts before a final of any document, the
HL-960 was designed to save toner during the proofing process. By easily
selecting the Economy Print Mode, end-uers receive output that appears as
if it were reproduced on an office copier set to a light toner density
setting while printing the page in its intended formats and design. When
users are ready to print a final copy, they can easily select normal mode
and print. This feature can dramatically reduce per page cost to well
under 2 cents while increasing toner yield up to 50%.

EPA Energy Star Program Compliant, Ergonomic Design

Because of its low energy usage, the HL-960 is qualified as compliant by
the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for inclusion in the EPA Energy
Star Program.

The HL-960's easy-to-read display and control panel can be tilted upward
for optimal operation and readability, while providing a user with direct
access to numerous functions. Printer messages and status can be set to
one of ten different languages (English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish,
Italian, Finnish, Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian).

Warranty and Reliability

The HL-960 includes a one-year limited parts and labor warranty. In and out
of warranty service is available on a walk-in, send-in, or on-site basis
through Brother, a nationwide network of Brother Elite/Authorized Service
Depots or nationally through Dow Jones (depending on location).
