Bitstream Inc. Joins CI Labs

Supports OpenDoc Industry Standard

New York, New York--June 20, 1995--Bitstream Inc. announced today its
membership in Component Integration Laboratories, Inc. (CI Labs), a
vendor-neutral industry association promoting OpenDoc. Bitstream joins
industry leaders including Adobe, Apple, IBM, Lotus, Novell and Taligent
in support of CI Labs OpenDoc component software architecture, an emerging
industry standard for software interoperability.

"Bitstream's goals are similar to CI Labs--to provide a vendor-neutral
cross-platform technology to the industry," said Ray Boelig, president and
CEO of Bitstream Inc. "We look forward to contributing Bitstream's font
technology expertise to assist the CI Labs association in realizing
OpenDoc as an industry standard for component software.

Bitstream TrueDoc Imaging Technology provides OpenDoc developers with a
solution for resolving universal font fidelity problems in component
architecture, delivering complete font fidelity across all applications,
operating systems, platforms and devices. Bitstream will work with OpenDoc
application developers to provide endusers a font solution that maintains
a component s font fidelity across all platforms and heterogeneous
environments.

Bitstream Joins Open Industry Association

Bitstream joins CI Labs in supporting efforts to provide cross-platform,
component software that will benefit users by making information and
applications easier to share. As an associate member of CI Labs, Bitstream
will participate in working groups, task forces, technical reviews, and
other component software development activities. Bitstream will also work
with association partners to guide the evolution of OpenDoc and promote
its interoperable, object-oriented environment.

Bitstream is supportive of open-industry standards because the company
believes that component software such as OpenDoc is the future computing
architecture, bringing the greatest benefit to the end-user. Bitstream is
currently working with CI Labs' other members to incorporate TrueDoc
technology and to further the progress of true component software.

Bitstream to Support OpenDoc Development

Bitstream hopes to contribute to OpenDoc's success. The company will
examine OpenDoc source code to find complimentary and comprehensive ways
to incorporate TrueDoc technology into future versions of OpenDoc.
Bitstream is also in serious discussions with CI Labs members about
building TrueDoc technology into emerging OpenDoc applications. TrueDoc,
which is currently built into document distribution applications, web
browsers and printer controllers, offers application developers and
end-users a font fidelity solution in component software architectures.

TrueDoc as an Enabling Technology

As component software architectures become more prevalent, users sharing
electronic documents across platforms and heterogeneous networks will
greatly increase. Maintaining a document s font fidelity will be vital to
users who need to share and display documents exactly as they were
created. Without complete font fidelity, documents lose much of their
intended efficacy, impact and legibility as well as their corporate
identity. TrueDoc technology, when built into a component software
architecture, will solve the font fidelity, language, character set, and
cross-platform problems faced by developers and users today.

Font fidelity is achieved when the original look and feel of electronic
documents is maintained on all screens and printers--independent of the
font format, application, character set, language or operating system. It
frees authors to employ any combination of fonts in any format and
guarantees that all readers can view and print, regardless of whether
those same fonts are installed on his system. Font fidelity is a critical
aspect of people s ability to share documents and information across the
enterprise.

About CI Labs

CI Labs is a vendor-neutral industry association promoting software
integration and component software. CI Labs' OpenDoc component software
architecture provides software integration that enables distributed,
cross-platform component software and brings a new level of computing
power to users. CI Labs will offer reference source code, technical
documentation, example software and validation services -- openly, without
non-disclosure requirements.

CI Labs' Sponsors Adobe Systems Inc., Apple Computer, Inc., IBM Corporation
and WordPerfect, the Novell Applications Group, have provided significant
financial support to the organization. Apple, IBM and Novell are
developing OpenDoc implementations for Macintosh, OS/2 and Windows
platforms, respectively. Phone CI Labs at 408-864-0300 or email
cilabs@cilabs.org for more information.
