New Laser Printer Pushes the Boundaries of Color Printing

Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS Offers Easy to Use, Realistic Color Laser
Printing With Sharp Text and Unrivaled Print Quality and Affordability

CUPERTINO, California--June 19, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. significantly
advanced desktop publishing again today by announcing the Apple Color
LaserWriter 12/600 PS, a groundbreaking color laser printer for workgroups
composed of any combination of Apple Macintosh, Power Macintosh,
Mac-compatible, Microsoft Windows and UNIX computer systems. The new
printer offers superior color and monochrome print quality, ease of use,
speed and affordability to customers in businesses, education, copy shops,
service bureaus, and desktop publishing professionals who require high
quality color and monochrome printing at a competitive price. The printer
provides a new level of price performance for producing presentations,
proposals, composites, financial information, or any document requiring
realistic color graphics.

"Customers want the same quality and ease of use in a color printer as
they've come to expect with monochrome laser printers," said Terry Bailey,
senior director for Apple's value add products group. "Today's
announcement means customers can look professional in color as well as in
black and white. The Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS delivers the right
combination of near-photographic-quality color printing coupled with the
highest quality black text. We're proud to announce Apple has filed 42
patents on technology developed for this printer. No longer do customers
have to compromise and settle for less."

"The first generation of color laser technology forced users to choose
between sharp text and color graphics," said Pieter Hartsook, editor of
the Hartsook Letter, a Macintosh market research concern in Alameda,
California. "With today's announcement, Apple has made a giant leap
forward, combining the best of two worlds--monchrome laser-quality text
with color graphics. In addition, Apple has successfully extended the
simplicity and elegance for which its computers are known into the complex
world of color printing. A laser-quality, inexpensive color business
printer is the last remaining obstacle to the wide-spread use of color
graphics in mainstream business communications."

Outstanding Quality

The Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS provides 600 by 600 dots per inch (dpi)
resolution for superior text and lines. The printer ships with Apple's
Color PhotoGrade technology, for an unprecedented level of photographic
detail, printing directly from the printer. Color PhotoGrade ensures
consistently vibrant, high-quality output, enhancing even low resolution
images. Apple's Auto Calibration technology ensures consistent appearance
of pages from start to finish of every print job.

The printer ships with 39 PostScript and 65 TrueType fonts. Included at no
extra charge is Apple's ColorSync 2.0 color matching technology. ColorSync
2.0 ensures compatibility among color management systems, peripheral
devices and most popular page layout and presentation software
applications. Using a sophisticated color matching accelerator, the new
printer enables ColorSync 2.0 to transform a 5.5 megabyte image in just
two seconds, so that the color viewed on the screen is virtually identical
to the color that comes out of the printer. The printer also supports
Pantone, an industry-standard color matching system.

"Until now, all the different color devices--monitors, printers and
scanners--had their own way of dealing with color," said Jonathan Seybold,
founder, Seybold Seminars. "You could never be sure the color you saw on
one device would even resemble the color that came out of another device.
ColorSync 2.0 calibrates and controls color so that it's really usable for
everyone."

Affordable and Easy to Use

The Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS ships with everything needed to get up and
running fast with no hidden costs. The printing software and fonts connect
in a single, simple step. Fewer consumables (four toner cartridges,
photoconductor and oil) and single side access make the Color LaserWriter
12/600 PS exceptionally clean and easy-to-use and maintain without messy
spills. The printer also uses Apple's Contone Compression Technology to
dramatically reduce the amount of memory needed to run the printer while
maintaining superior print quality. Using this technology, the Color
LaserWriter 12/600 PS needs only 12 MB of RAM and makes sophisticated
Color PhotoGrade and true 600 dpi resolution available at no extra cost.
Color printers lacking this combination of hardware and software require
nearly 130MB of memory, making them much more expensive. In addition, at
five percent coverage the printer costs just three cents per page, or 13
cents per page at 20 percent color coverage.

Color laser printing is far more economical than thermal transfer and dye
sublimation printers. Unlike these alternatives, color lasers print well
on a variety of standard office papers without scratching or flaking.
Until today, high-quality color printing was dependent on costly
technologies that put it out of reach of those who could benefit from it
the most. The small office/home office market will have immediate access
to the Apple Color LaserWriter through Kinko's locations throughout the
U.S.

"We're delighted to offer all our customers, including corporate accounts,
the opportunity for affordable, high-quality color output, a service they
have requested for some time," said Wendell Wilson, vice president of
operations and product development for Kinko's, Inc. The Color LaserWriter
12/600 PS and the QuickTake 150 digital camera are available for customer
use in over 750 Kinko's locations throughout the U.S. Kinko's Copy Centers
provide small and large businesses with a wide array of office solutions,
including computer services, binding and finishing, presentations
materials and video conferencing.

Compatibility

In addition to the complete line of Macintosh, Power Macintosh and
Mac-compatible computers, the Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS works equally
well with Windows-software based systems. The printer comes standard with
"plug and play" networking support, including Ethernet connectivity for
Novell, TCP/IP, and AppleTalk protocols, LocalTalk, and IEEE 1284
bidirectional parallel. A SCSI interface is included for storing extra
fonts on optional internal and external hard disk drives.

Performance and Paper Handling

The printer's speedy RISC processor provides impressive speed, printing up
to 12 pages per minute in monochrome, three pages per minute in color, and
one page per minute for color transparencies. Apple has incorporated a
number of proprietary ASICs to speed the processing of complex documents.
The printerships with two input trays that hold 350 sheets of paper. An
optional 250-sheets tray is also available. The Color LaserWriter 12/600
PS easily handles letter, legal, A4, and B5 paper sizes, including color
stock and Color LaserWriter transparencies.

Availability and Price

The Apple Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS is available immediately through
Apple authorized resellers worldwide and has a U.S. Apple price of $6,989.
Additional black toner cartridges are available for $119, U.S. Apple
