APC announces new large capacity Back-UPS Pro UPS models: Performance Power
Protection for Advanced Workstations

APC expands line offering with 1000 and 1400 VA units

(West Kingston, RI) American Power Conversion is pleased to announce two
new high capacity Back-UPS Pro models to its existing series of line
interactive UPSs with integrated Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR). The
Back-UPS Pro 1000 and 1400 uninterruptible power supplies provide battery
backup power and surge protection to computers and other sensitive
electronic equipment. Designed for multi-tasking systems, peer-to-peer
workstations, engineering workstations and other advanced networked
or-stand-alone systems, the new Pro models feature a microprocessor
controlled Intelligent Battery Management system to monitor battery
performance, life and reliability. The Back-UPS Pro 1000 and 1400 are
suitable for long battery runtime requirements, multiple computer systems,
telecom, and POS applications.

The Intelligent Battery Management system includes an automatic self test
to alert users of battery status, overload conditions, or the necessity of
battery replacement. The Pro series also employs fast recharge technology
and battery discharge protection to maximize the service life of the
batteries.

The Back-UPS Pro incorporates AVR to automatically correct brownouts and
over-voltages without using battery power. AVR protection maximizes backup
time and extends UPS service life by saving battery power for extended
outages. AVR and instant battery backup ensure that the computer system
receives a continuous supply of stable power during brownouts and
over-voltages. During a power failure, the Back-UPS Pro allows the user to
save, close files and safely shut down the system while protecting data
and productivity.

"The Back-UPS Pro series is the first UPS product specifically designed to
address the needs of the advanced workstation user," commented Andrew
Kallfelz, Back-UPS Business Unit Manager. "With AVR and multiple path
surge protection, the Back-UPS Pro offers the most complete power
protection for networked or stand-alone systems."

The Back-UPS Pro models 1000 and 1400 will begin shipping in mid-April with
US list prices of $589 and $759 respectively. Both will be available in
120V and 230V versions. The Back-UPS Pro models 280, 420, and 650 include
the same set of features as the 1000 and 1400 and have been shipping since
December 1994 with US list prices of $199, $299, and $399 respectively.

In addition to multi-stage surge protection and EMI/RFI filtering of
utility power, the Pro series includes integrated fax/modem and network
cable surge protection. This unique feature prevents damaging back-door
surges from entering the computer via the phone line or 10Base-T network
cable. The combination of utility and network/modem surge protection,
effectively protects multiple paths of entry for surges and spikes which
can damage hardware and cause data corruption.

Other benefits include:

User Replaceable Hot-Swappable Batteries: The complete Back-UPS Pro line
allows for easy replacement of exhausted batteries without having to send
the entire UPS back to the manufacturer for service. A removable front
panel on the new 1000 and 1400 VA models allows for quick and safe
replacement of the batteries while the connected system remains running.

Advance Warning Diagnostics and Alarms: Back-UPS Pro informs the user of
system and battery status: front panel LED's indicate on line, on battery,
overload, and replace battery conditions. Audible alarms alert the user to
on battery, low battery, replace battery, and overload conditions.

Communications Interface Port: Back-UPS Pro models 420 and higher allow
automatic, unattended shutdown of files and operating systems during
extended outages. When used with PowerChute software or interface kits
(sold separately), the UPS will automatically shutdown Windows, Windows
NT, OS/2, SCO Unix, Netware, LANtastic, Apple System 7, LAN Manager, and
most other popular platforms.

All Back-UPS Pro models are UL, CSA and VDE approved and include a two year
warranty.
