3M Introduces Its Gold Series:
Highest Reliability For The Ultimate In Data Integrity

ST. PAUL, MN (June 20, 1995)--Adding to its present line of high-quality
computer accessories, 3M Company has just introduced its exclusive Gold
Series family of computer cables and connectors. Designed with unsurpassed
quality, the Gold Series is specifically created for users needing maximum
reliability and the ultimate in data integrity between a computer, its
components, and its peripherals. The 3M Gold Series line consists of an
exciting array of peripheral cables, gender changers, SCSI terminators,
and data switchers for a variety of needs required by both PC and Mac
computers.

While cables and connectors are often taken for granted, they are one of
the most important elements in the mix of computer components, such as the
monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and computer peripheral devices like
printers and modems. And, unlike any other part of a computer system,
cables and connectors are more likely to be subjected to physical abuse
and can cause seemingly inexplicable problems if they fail.

"The reliability of a computer system is dependent upon the quality of its
components and peripheral devices," says Lee Kennedy, marketing and
international director, Audio and Video Products Division. "And the
essential ingredient for all of those pieces is the cabling required to
attach them together."

To maintain data integrity under even the most harsh conditions, 3M has
concentrated on all areas of connector and cable design for its Gold
Series line. For example, data cables use gold plating on both the
connector and its contacts to prevent oxidation and help guarantee a
positive connection at all times. The tough, rugged premolded PVC outer
shell contains an aluminum undermold barrier to shield against extraneous
EMI or RF interference and includes a pre-molded strain relief to protect
the cable from physical damage due to flexing.

The cable, too, is designed for reliability and data integrity. It's made
of a superflexible rubberized PVC material with a flexible aluminized
shield to further protect the internal 28 AWG stranded copper wires and
resist EMI or RF interference. Additionally, to make the cable a truly
complete package for the user, each comes with two ID tags for quick
identification once installed and a toll-free Help Line is available
(1-800-7426658).

"Creating a cable system that is completely reliable in virtually any
number of computer environments is a challenge that requires acute
attention to detail," says Kennedy. "A computer is literally a chain of
individual components and peripherals, and the cables connecting them
together simply can't be the weakest link."

Nor can any other portion in the chain, and Kennedy adds that 3M has used
the same design philosophy for AC power cords, gender-change connectors, a
SCSI terminator, and an Apple Talk networking kit in the Gold Series line.
Additionally, the Gold Series includes data switchers for the ultimate in
peripheral flexibility. Two- and four-position manual switchers allow a
single printer or modem to be shared by multiple computers with the flip
of a switch. And an automatic two-position switcher routes data signals
from two computers to one peripheral automatically when needed.

The Gold Series is the newest addition to 3M's extensive computer accessory
line that includes a variety of products--from disk-drive cleaners to
surge protectors--for all home, office, and professional needs. "The
explosive growth of this industry represents enormous opportunities for
our dealers," says Kennedy, "and 3M intends to support them by
continuously offering a full line of high-quality, high-necessity products
to offer their customers."

3M is a diversified $15 billion (1994 sales) company headquartered in St.
Paul, Minnesota, with operations in 62 countries. 3M manufactures some
60,000 products ranging from audio and video tapes, data storage products,
fiber optic connectors and medical diagnostic products to Post-it notes
and Scotch adhesive tape. In 1995, 3M was ranked the eighth most admired
company by Fortune magazine.
