Notes : On the 24th of February 1996 Id Software finally
released the Quake Test. After a two year wait
everyone calls their friends while they download
it. The reaction is subdued. Yeah, John said it
was a test, but we were expecting to be blown off
our feet. As it was, yeah, the lighting is nice
and the scenery gives a good atmosphere. But
                          thats all we could say.

For Id this must have been a dark day. They told
us it was a test and we knew it was a test, but we
expected they were further along than this.

As it turns out, they were. Within 24 hours a
weary-eyed hacker discovers that the test does
infact contain monsters, and reveals the hack
                          that can enable them.

12 hours ago I started playing around with this
and and was blown away. These monsters are
amazing! All of a sudden the dreary Quake test
is transformed from a depressing footnote in
Id's impending obituary to proof that Quake
really will rock our world. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!

So bear with Id. Lets Give them the benefit of the
doubt and a little more time. This scenario I
constructed will show you that Quake will deliver
great things. Infact you can get a really good
                          taste of them RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                          See the installation instructions above.

Description : You had so many dreams when you started that
small software company. Your bright idea soon
became a spiffy product that swept the net and
overnight you were a success. You married your
sweetheart and started a family. You bought
your parents a new house so they could move out
of that syringe carpet neighbourhood. Your wife
become involved in charity helping the poor and
the homeless while you worked on new and
wonderful code. You were going to make the world a
                          better place.

But somewhere in Redmond WA someone is making
other plans. A press release announces that
Microsoft will be building your software
function into NT and giving it away for free.
The phones stop ringing. The banks threaten
foreclose. You call the local TV station but NBC
is to busy running stories about Windows 96 and
setting up MS-NBC cable to care. You now have
no choice. You must go see the man and
beg him to leave you and your company alone.

Landing in Seattle you catch a taxi to Microsoft.
You slip in through the service entry and
follow the trail of yes men to the master. The
yes men disappear and he hops in an elevator
going down. This is your chance. Maybe with his
corporate pitbulls gone you can talk one on one
and he'll reveal that he is at heart a caring,
                          sensitive and misunderstood guy.

You use the next elevator. You get off in the
dim and dank basement. You wonder why Microsoft
built its hq on an ancient stone ruins? You
dismiss these thoughts as you see Bill alone,
                          praying.

But hang on!!! Hes "praying" before a wall
nailed with skinned faces! What's going on here?
Confused you call out "Mr. Gates?" He turns
around, but now you see hes morfed into a
monster with the head of a floating giant tapeworm.
He hisses at you menacingly, and starts
chanting "One Microsoft Way! One Microsoft Way!"

Closeby you hear rattles of armor as God knows
what denizens rush in to grab you. You grab
a nearby shotgun and jump through a big hole
in the floor. Above you you hear a lot of noise,
but now you're more worried about the blood
curdling shriek accompanied by hot breath on
your neck. Something is in here with you!

You load the shotgun and slam it shut. You
grimace. "So he's the Antichrist. Now it
all makes sense. Well, I'm gunna send him
back to Hell or my name isn't Marc Andersen.
                          Long live NetScape!!!!!"

Additional Notes : I made this by taking TEST1.BSP and hacking it
with a hex editor. I added the monsters, but
there wasnt a lot of room. I took out one of
the Deathmatch starts, so dont act surprised
if it falls over if you run it in that mode.
I wanted to include some other monsters, but
many of them are only "half baked". The
Shalrath is fantastic, but I think I broke a
limit when I tried to include it.

                          This'll give you a good pulse-pounding welcome
that Id should have delivered with the original
                          test.

Caution : Because this is a patch it will only work with
QTEST1. It probably wont work with after versions.
