<TOOLS USED IN TUTORIAL:>
 - For creating Quake textures I recommend Paint Shop Pro 5, which can be
   downloaded from:
   http://www.jasc.com
 - For Wad manipulation, I recommend and use AdQuEdit which can be
   downloaded from:
   http://goldrush.com/~hicks/adquedit/
 - For the Quake Palette, goto:
   http://www.frontiernet.net/~davejmj/dh/files/quakepal.zip

Unzip each of these files and create a directory for each.

<INTRO:>
This is just a basic tutorial on creating textures for Quake 1. This is meant
to be a reference for newbies interested in starting their own textures. This
does not tell you how to create the actual look of a texture. You'll need to
be creative and make your designs up ;) This tutorial requires that you already
have basic knowledge of level editing and graphics creating.

<WHY?>
I made this tutorial for myself and others like me :) But seriously, there are
NO tutorials out there for creating quake1 textures, I have looked everywhere
and could not find one. This is probably due to the fact that Quake 1 is old
and everybody is making new levels/mods/skins/textures for Quake 2. However, I
enjoy editing for Quake 1 much more than Quake 2(like anybody cares!)
If you know of a tutorial or tips/hints/tricks on creating textures for Q1,
email/icq me so I can add it as a link in this tutorial.

<STARTING A NEW TEXTURE:>

1. ) Start up PAINT SHOP PRO 5 and goto FILE > NEW

2. ) Specify a dimension for your new texture. The Background color should be
selected from the quake palette once you load it up(step 4)

    ___________________________________________________________________________ __
    [*NOTE* \/
[Standard dimensions for QUAKE textures follow as:
    [
    [ 16x16
    [ 32x32
    [ 64x64
    [ 128x128
    [
[ Basically, everything is doubled by the last number... You get the point :)
    [
    [ Other sizes include:
    [
    [ 16x128
    [ 16x64
    [ 16x128
    [ 128x16
    [ 32x64 <---| usually used for crate/ammo box textures
    [ 32x16 <---|
    [ 32x128
    [ 64x128
    [
    [
[ You can pretty much use any dimension for a texture, but those are the most
[ common ones found in quake /\
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --

3. ) Image type should be 256 colors (8 BIT)

4. ) *IMPORTANT* --> Goto COLORS, Click on load palette and double click on the
     quake.pal file.

     __________________________________________________________________________ __
     [ *NOTE* \/
     [
[ If you goto EDIT PALETTE under COLORS you will see a index of all the
[ colors in the quake palette. Click on a color and PSP5 will give you a
[ index number for that color. Now, keeping this in mind, colors #241
[ to #256 are colors known as FullBrights. FullBright is when a color
[ on a texture can be seen even if the lighting in the room is absolute
[ pitch black. FullBright colors are good for creating a texture that
[ would be used as a light. So, if you dont want the lighting in a quake
[ level to have a effect on a color in your texture, use #241 to #256. All
[ colors below #241 are the colors you should use for standard textures.
     [ /\
     -------------------------------------------------------------------------- --

5. ) Your ready to begin making a new texture!

     __________________________________________________________________________ __
     [ *NOTE* \/
     [
[ When you goto save your texture goto the PCX file format, select
[ OPTIONS and make sure version 5 is CHECKED. If not, check it and click
[ OK. Now you can save your file.
     [ /\
     -------------------------------------------------------------------------- --

<AFTER YOU HAVE SAVED THE TEXTURE:>

6. ) Start up ADQUEDIT v1.3

7. ) Goto FILE > ADD > BASE DIRECTORY

8. ) Select the dir where your new texture(s) is. AdQue should display your
texture file if you saved it as PCX format.

9. ) Click on your texture file.

10.) Goto FILE > NEW > WADARCHIVE

11.) AdQue should make a NewWad.wad file under the dir you put your texture in.

12.) Now, double click on the NEWWAD.WAD and the WAD EDITOR should come up.

13.) Click on IMPORT and select your PCX file. After doing this, you should
be able to see/view your new texture in the WAD EDITOR.

14.) Now for the last step, make sure your texture is selected and click
on MAKE MIP. AdQuEdit will convert the PCX file to the standard quake texture
format known as MIP. Now your texture is ready to be used in a quake level.
You can add as many textures as you want to this wad, so have a blast with
it! There are many other features in AdQue's WAD EDITOR, such as exporting
textures and adding your textures straight to other wads. Expirement with
them, and see what you can do.

15.) When you are done adding new textures simply click on EXIT. Load up your
favorite level editor, select your wad file and slap those new textures
     on your level!
