1. WHAT IS "PLATOON - TOTAL CONVERSION" ?
=========================================

Platoon is a total conversion (TC) add-on for Duke Nukem 3D v1.3D.
The TC takes place in the Vietnam War. You are the lieutenant of
the 2nd Platoon, Company B. Your tour of duty takes you from the
fierce firefights in the jungle to the dark and booby-trapped
underground tunnel systems.

Platoon TC features:

* Duke Nukem is replaced by a real soldier
* Seven realistic new weapons
* A cool new inventory item for DukeMatch: Trip Flare
* Four new enemies
* Cool aircrafts which drop napalm and bombs
* 35 new sounds and lots of new graphics
* A new episode (6 maps) for Single Player/Cooperative play
  with realistic missions
* A new episode (7 maps) for DukeMatch play including new
  versions of Bad Karma's map Beirut2 and IceBreaker's map Arabcity
* Lots of cool military stuff (mines, artillery, radios, etc.)

=====================================
2. INSTALLATION / STARTING A NEW GAME
=====================================

1) Copy the file PLATOON.ZIP to your \Duke3d directory

2) Unzip the file PLATOON.ZIP

3) Run PLATOON.BAT

4) After you have installed Platoon TC, type 'DUKE3D' to play in
   single player or 'SETUP' to play co-op or dukematch.
   NOTE: In a multiplay game, all players must have
	 Platoon TC installed.

5) In Single Player, select 'START A NEW GAME' and the episode
   'L.A. MELTDOWN'. After that you must choose the difficulty level.
   We recommend the easiest 'PIECE OF CAKE', because some maps
   are quite difficult. The difficulty level 'LET'S ROCK' is for
   real soldiers only.

6) In Cooperative, the right episode is 'L.A.MELTDOWN' just like
   in single player, but you should choose 'COME GET SOME' as the
   difficulty level (or 'LET'S ROCK')

7) In DukeMatch, the levels are in the 'LUNAR APOCALYPSE' episode.

3. WEAPONS / INVENTORY ITEMS
============================

Platoon TC features seven realistic weapons that were all
used in the Vietnam War. Here are short briefings on them:

* M16 5.56mm Assault Rifle
	Ammo pack: 12 rounds Max ammo: 180 rounds
	M-16 is your standard weapon in the game.
	Needs reloading after 12 rounds.
	(should be 30 rounds, but it can't be changed)

* M60 7.62mm Machine Gun
	Ammo pack: 50 rounds Max ammo: 200 rounds
	M-60 is a known for its firepower, but it uses
	lots of ammo.

* M72 66mm Light Antitank Weapon
	Ammo pack: single unit Max units: 10
	M72LAW is a great weapon in destroying B-10
	recoilless rifles and bunkers.
	M72 is a disposable weapon.

* M26A1 Fragmentation Grenade
	Ammo pack: 5 grenades Max grenades: 25
	Throw grenades behind corners and into rooms,
	to check out if someone is there.
	You must use the pipebomb detonator to make
	grenades to blow up (can't be fixed, sorry)

* Flamethrower
	Ammo pack: 30 shots Max shots: 30
	For massive ground clearances, there's nothing
	like a flamethrower.

* M18A1 APERS "Claymore" Mine
	Ammo pack: single unit Max mines: 10
	Claymore mines can only be placed on walls.
	The mine detonates by means of a tripwire.
	This weapon is mainly for DukeMatch, but it can
	also be used in single player/co-op levels.

* Sniper Rifle
	Ammo pack: 5 Max ammo: 10 rounds
	This weapon is designed mostly for DukeMatch, but you
	can also find it from some single player/co-op levels.
	(though you won't be added a kill when you assassinate
	your friend with this cool but unfair weapon :)
	Sniper rifle is an extremely powerful weapon, it can
	take out most targets with a single shot. Works best
	with the night vision on. Every time you shoot a wall
	or the ground with this weapon, there's a blue flash.
	(Because this gun replaces the freezethrower)
	You have a limited vision while aiming with
	this gun, so watch out for the other players...

* M49A1 Trip Flare
	You can carry only one flare at the time.
	(Couldn't change that)
	The flare is activated on contact (when someone walks
	over it) and shoots a firework-like flare straight up.
	It can be used to signal the presence of another player
	in a certain location.
	Placing a trip flare is simple: just duck and press space.
	After that you'll have a few seconds to move away from the
	placed trip flare.
	The difference between a placed and a non-placed trip flare,
	is that there's a red stripe in the non-placed one.
	(The non-placed flare can be picked up and placed)

============================
4. AIR AND ARTILLERY SUPPORT
============================

In some levels there are radios, and using them (pressing space)
you can call in air strikes and fire missions.

These two aircrafts were both used in the Vietnam War, and now
you can also see them in Platoon TC.

* F-4E Phantom II
	Armament: Napalm

* A-26A Invader
	Armament: 500 lb bombs

===============
5. ENEMY FORCES
===============

There are four new enemies in Platoon TC.
Here are short descriptions of them:

* VietCong soldier with an AK-47 assault rifle
	The AK-47 is the standard weapon of the Vietcong (VC)
	and the North Vietnamese Army (NVA).

* VC soldier with an RPD light machine gun
	The RPD LMG has a high rate of fire and it's also
	quite accurate.

* Kamikaze VC soldier
	This guy has a backpack full of explosives and a detonator
	in his hand. When he gets close enough to you, BOOM !!!

* B-10 82mm Recoilless Rifle
	This weapon is quite accurate and deadly, but has a very
	slow rate of fire. The B-10 RR can't move because of its
	weight.

* Antipersonnel Mine
	I don't know if this is an enemy, but it's extremely deadly
	and quite difficult to detect. If you spot a mine, you can
	try to destroy it with grenades or the M72LAW.
	When you step over a mine, you'll hear a click. Then you
	should stop moving immediately. You can try to disarm the
	mine by pressing the space bar, there's a fifty-fifty
	chance that you'll succeed in disarming (and the mine
	disappears). If you aren't so lucky, the mine
	will blow up !

===============================
6. SINGLE PLAYER / CO-OP LEVELS
===============================

These levels are in the "L.A. Meltdown" episode.

* "Alpha Bravo"
	Location: South Vietnam, near Cambodian border
	Date: May 3, 1967
	Reconnaissance has reported that the elements of NVA 4th
	Division are moving towards the city of Pleiku. Your
	mission is stop them at once.

* "Ambush on Highway 1"
	Location: Highway 1, South Vietnam
	Date: September 15, 1967
	Your mission is to escort a convoy to Nha Trang.

* "Operation Yellow Star"
	Location: An Lao Valley, South Vietnam
	Date: January 18, 1968
	The famous NVA 3rd "Yellow Star" division is hiding somewhere
	in the An Lao Valley. Your task is to find and eliminate
	the enemy.

* "Assault on Hue"
	No description available
	(You'll see it in the briefing room in the game)

* "Apocalypse Now"
	No description available.

===================
7. DUKEMATCH LEVELS
===================

These DukeMatch levels are in the "Lunar Apocalypse" episode.

* "Apocalypse Now"

* "The Horrors of Hue"

* "Beirut 3"

* "Vietnam 2"

* "Bunker Hill"

* "Guerrilla Warfare"

* "Arabcity 2"

==============
8. INTO BATTLE
==============

(Single Player / Cooperative)

Like a real military operation, every mission starts from your own
quarters in the base. First you'll have to choose the weapons for
your mission. There are two rooms which have different weapons and
you can only go to one room. You'll be able to see the weapons in
the rooms before you go in, so that you can choose the weapons and
equipment that you want. For example, the other room might have more
firepower (like an M60 machine gun and M16 mags ), but the other room
has an armor vest and a shotgun (which will keep you alive). After
choosing the gear you must go to the briefing room, there you will
find out what your mission is. Finally you will be teleported to the
battle zone.

=============
9. UNDER FIRE
=============

As you probably know, in real warfare you'll have to make
fast decisions. That's why Platoon TC may seem to be quite difficult
at first. Here are a few tips how to survive:

* In a single player game, save often !

* If you hear VC talking or machine gun fire, take cover immediately.
  Especially if you don't see the enemy.

* Use ammo wisely, 'cause most likely you aren't gonna find any ammo
  until the next mission.

* There are mines scattered around some levels, so watch out for them.
  If you step on a mine, try to disarm it by hitting space.

* Use radios to call in air strikes and artillery. They'll help you,
  but be careful when playing around with napalm and 500 lb bombs,
  because they can't tell the difference between a friend and an enemy.

* If you hear a whistling voice, take cover !!!

* Sometimes it's better to withdraw to a better firing position, than
  to stay in a place where everyone can shoot you. Especially if you
  are outnumbered (in single player, that means every time :)
