Version 2.5(Adds full support for DUKE3D ver1.5)

FEM.CON readme

Prior to the Duke's unceromonious return to earth in his famous Hollywood debut, he made various arrangements with the medical cruiser "Ryan's Hope". These arrangements amounted to a supply of $20dollarbill look alike, self-adhesive "teleporter foils." Impregnated with electronic particles, these foils enable distant teleporters to lock on and beam the foil holder to activated teleporter pad. Designed as an aid to thwart street criminals( the criminal would steal the foil thinking it was money, then end up in a jail cell) foils fell out of public use because of too many practical jokes and gags(more than one cat or dog ended up being transported to police facilites). However a large supply of foils still remained in various inventories where emergency rescue personnel among others found a use for them. And one of these others is DUKE NUKEM.
Should the Dukester run across any prisoner, any hostage, or ANYONE in need of help, all he had to do was hand them a foil, and in the wink of an eye, they would be wisked away to "Ryans Hope." There, after their cortex is scanned for insurance and bank account information, rescuees would recieve comprehensive medical attention at the hands of the finest equipped doctors and nurses in the in the Solar System. If their insurance or funding is lacking, however, they would still get a complementory free medkit and hammock in steerage, just below the main gun battery.

Of course, because of the alien's peculiar fascination with Earth women, the Duke will mostly end up rescuing chicks. These babes may be inside of pods, impaled, electronically implanted to dance endlessly, or otherwise not be able to run and scream when the fur is flying, but if rescued, "Ryan's Hope" can restore each to perfect health nevertheless.

However, Dukes rescue duties does not end there. As if not to allow Duke to hog all the glory, the MARINES have fought, and continue to fight the aliens whenever there are forces available to engage them. Frequently, these marines bite off more than they can chew and guess who has to come in and clean up the mess? Now the Dukester can recover Marine casualties, teleport marine POW's out of prison cells, or finish that abortive assault marked by all the wounded marines laying around a dead BattleLord. Recovery of such marine casualties will likewise recieve "Ryan's Hope" rewards, though aliens still may not like it one bit, so watch out!!!

Scientists have also discoverd a way to "de-mutify" pigcops, that is return them to human form. If you have the guts to stand up to a shotgun blast and attempt the teleport of a pigcop, go for it! If fortunate, you will recieve a greater than usual amount of SHOTGUN AMMO! That is greater than what you would otherwise get if you killed the pigcop outright.

Additionally, the aliens have been seeding areas with the "Organtic", a highly toxic plant. Earth scientists are interested in the properties of this plant, so if encountered and recovered, there are rewards to be had! However this plant WILL reduce Duke's health to zero if he stands near it to long, so he better kill or teleport it up QUICK! More on the Organtic in the latter end of this document.

What does this mean for you the Player of Duke3d? Prior to FEMCON, every fem, babe, podchick, doomed space marine, Snake P., dog, or pirate you ran across were either pathetic bulletstoppers, brainless dancing flashers, suffering "killme" wimperers or all of the above! With FEMCON, all this changes!!!

Now when you walk up to a fem, or the above listed character, you can RESCUE them, that is instantly teleport them away to a safe place! Hit the spacebar a couple of things will happen:

1. A message will flash.
2. The character will disappear from the scene.
3. A medkit, ammo, boots, jetpack, steroids or some other device or weapon may be left behind.
4. An alien may appear where the character just was, are you quick on the draw?
5. A morter round may be left bouncing around. Lookout! Its still LIVE!

The above means that the Duke flipped a teleport foil on them and they are now instantly transported to "Ryan's Hope" sickbay, saying "bye" as they vanish! Sometimes it may take more than one spacebar hit for them to vanish, though the message and "female bye" voice still may happen. Podchicks or wounded marines or others with alien vines wrapped around them may have a slightly different message, and are too distaught for a cheery "bye," but are rescued just the same.

4. A medkit, ammo, boots, jetpack, steroids or some other device may be left behind.

This means that in exchange for sending them customers, "Ryan's Hope" has sent you some (hopefully) useful item from their stores!

5. An alien may appear where the character just was.

The aliens have a limited teloport/lock track capability. When a cahracter beams out, an alien may instantly teleport in to investigate the disturbance. This generally has the unpleasant effect of bumping your incoming load of goodies from "Ryan's Hope" (damn alien bastards are gonna pay for stealing my stuff!!!).If this happens, watch out! Octabrains are easy to stomp with your boot as they are slow to respond to their new surroundings. And it IS rewarding just to kick them so hard they see their last thought. But the gattling gun Lizard and Fatman SaucerDude aren't so easy to dispatch!!!

6. An explosion may occur, or if you are standing back far enough, a pretty orange and sparkling yellow ball may be left bouncing around.

The aliens beamed in a live MORTER ROUND! The orange and sparkling yellow ball is an unexploded alien MORTER round(of course I found that out the hard way in one of my games). If you are standing close to a fem you teleported, the morter round will explode, injuring you and ketchuping other nearby fems. If you stand a little back, the round may not explode, but just bounce and lie there. If other fems got killed in the explosion, there is a chance that Octabrains and Liztroopers will appear to investigate!!!

Space marines:Similar things happen as above, a variation on the fem theme. However, if killed, aliens WILL NOT appear(a quirk of the hardcode for SPACEMARINE, I could not get it to work as for the fems). Octabrains and Commanders that investigate otherwise are harder to kill, so BACKOFF, HIDE, then let em have it! Several spacebar hits may be required to teleport a marine, however.
Organtic:The plant is dangerous to Duke and is harder to kill with point weapons from medium to long range. If an octabrain is killed, one or two organtics will spawn, giving you something else to shoot at!

Pigcops: To teleport a pigcop, you must be VERY CLOSE to them! A sucessful teleport will likely result in more stuff than than killing them. However, it may take several tries and you may end up dead, so it's a good move to try when you have lots of health but little ammo!

Other characters:The variety of stuff recovered may not be as great as it is for the fems, but is worth going for nevertheless! Some civilians and entertainers(the pirates) can be stubborn, so it may take several spacebar hits to rescue them.

Unzip FEMCON25.ZIP to your DUKE3D directory. Hide away your old game.con and other files of the same name or rename them to something else.

Then type "DUKE3D as usual.

Open Duke3d and play as normal, remembering that any fems you now run across you can SAVE(you hero, you) and in return recieve a pleasant(maybe) surprise!!!

Old saved games played prior to FEMCON will not work properly with a newly installed FEMCON. Start a new game or map and then save.

That's it, go for it Duke, save the chicks and bring our boys back home!!!

One other thing, STEROIDS have an extra ability, if on steroids, and if Duke's health falls below 50, the game will attempt to keep it at 50 until the steroids run out! Still, Duke's gotta watch out for close shotgun blasts and RPG explosions!!!

I included this extra to give steroids that added chutzpah I think they needed without becoming a game spoiler. Your'e still not going to walz into a room full of Octabrains and be the last one standing!!!

Two additional art tiles have been included which have new graphics for the marine and also Snake P(he's alive)! Graphics and code for some civilians have also been included(art taken from Witchaven and Tekwar games). You cn explore their use by running both included maps.

Ideas for using FEMCON

For hostage rescue scenarios:
Since I know of no way to currently keep score of how many fems there are to rescue on a certain level, this has to be done by paper and pen. Example: Stated in the readme.txt for your level, you list13 fems and 3 marines in your *.map. As the Duke goes through your level, he marks one off for each he has rescued, thus at the end of the level, he rescues 8, the others are not found or are killed. Each time he replays the level, he tries to rescue all 15.

For distribution of weapons and other items:
Instead of having stuff just lying around, put fems and marines in instead. If the Duke rescues enough of them, all the stuff he needs(except access cards) will eventually be given to him. Of course it must be kept in mind that this may be offset somewhat by the random teleporting of investigating aliens or exploding morters.

For variety in custom art/maps
If other sprites are drawn and added(mothers with children, injured soldiers, men in wheel chairs, fry cooks etc) fem.con need not be limited to fems, but to others as well. This would require some alteration and inserting the new sprites(or whatever) in the art tiles. Duke3d v1.5 seems to accept new user actors quite well.

Add excitement to existing maps
Why hassle with Build, streching textures and watching your machine crash as you add and delete vertices etc? Stock marines, civilians and fems in those familiar maps instead and have a new element of excitement using fem.con! Load your favorite maps in Build, delete weapons and item sprites and replace them with numerous marines fems! The more marines fems Duke rescues, the greater his chances of finding killer weapons to hassle aliens with!!! Adds a new challenge and may require greater discriminating use of RPGS!!!

Add a different level of activity for your present game environment.
If a level already includes a number of fems, FEMCON will give the Duke add a new element of excitement as he makes his way through levels in the commercial game,

Chuck Norris wannabe scenario
Bring our boys back home. Stab deep into alien territory and rescue wounded marines stashed away in an alien prison. Avoid the large force of BattleLords hot on your tail!

Storm the Alien Alamo scenario
Heaps of wounded spacemarines are lying around an entrance to alien complex. Recover the casualties, get weapons and ammunition. Then FINISH the job they started.

In the above situations, the "organtic" can be added as active hostile flora or as sentry plants or anywhere where a low ceiling is present. Remember organtic restrictions and that Duke will be injured while recieving rewards for collecting them.

Organtic for build designers

If using the organtic, keep in mind that the game initially sees the plant as if you hit the "c" key on it in Build. This means if you placed on the floor in Build, and then run the game, you will notice that the plant is now SUNK INTO the floor, as if you pressed the "c" key in Build. If you want the plant to be seen at a precise height, place it and in 3d mode hit the "c" key. The Organtic will sink a few notches. Now use the pgup, pgdn keys to place it. This is how it will appear in in the game. Hit the "c" key again, and now it will rise a few notches. This makes NO DIFFERENCE in the game. Whatever you do, though, the organtic will arise out of its placement, drift towards the sector ceiling and move along its surface towards Duke. If Duke gets within a certain distance, he can hit the spacebar and capture and teleport out the organtic. However, this may take several tries all the while the organtic is attacking Duke. Duke may instead find it easer to blow them away rather than risk collecting them(even though he might get an RPG for his efforts)! Complete rundown can be found in the Organtic.txt.

DISCLAIMER-- If FEMCON does not work properly for you, or the way you think it should or if you don't like it, or if your computer doesn't like it, or your computer behaves in ways substandard or superstandard to its normal operating parameters, or if you DO like it and you become enstranged from your family and hoplessly addicted to Duke3d because of it, or whatever, I disavow all responsibility!!! Use FEMCON at your own risk!!!
