OVERVIEW
--------

Document Conversion Manager for OS/2 is a SOM object whose
purpose is to provide seamless, accurate document translation
services.

This release is fully enabled for DisplayWrite DOC and
RFT, and Ami Pro document exchange.

===========================================================
The Lotus Notes RTF-CD format creation modules are first
release alpha - and only just made it into this release for
the Merlin applications Sampler CD. The retained funtionality
is minimal. Paragraph text should be maintained, and should
view and import OK, tables are created and should view OK,
but there are problems with import.

Please watch our web site - www.ftech.net/~pembroke - for
information on further releases of the CDF modules.

If you want to be notified when we have updates available
please send e-mail to frank@pembroke-int.com
============================================================

Users need to be able to work with data - document objects -
without being concerned where or by what they were created.
Document Conversion Manager provides users with the ability
to work with document objects by providing seamless transformation
of documents at the system level. The desktop intelligently provides
translation services to applications on a need basis.

There is a requirement for three levels of conversion :

No roundtrip required - DCA/RFT storage.
- Ami Pro to DCA/RFT where the DCA/RFT document is comprised
of a single fixed pitch font with column margins set for
use by a dumb terminal, with text reformatted for those
margins and the document fully repaginated.

Roundtrip required
- Ami Pro to DCA/RFT with complete font mapping which requires
each environment to have complimentary fonts.

Roundtrip required
- Ami Pro to DCA/RFT where the DCA/RFT document is comprised
of a group of fixed pitch fonts of equal size, with column
margins set for use by a dumb terminal, with text reformatted
for those margins and the document fully repaginated.
DCA/RFT to Ami Pro where each DCA typestyle maps to a specific
face and point size, eg :
  Courier 10pt = Typestyle 85
  Tmns Rmn 12pt= typestyle 86
  Helvetic 16pt= typestyle 87

This version shows how :

 - Ami Pro and DisplayWrite/RFT documents can be co-existed.
 - DisplayWrite/RFT documents can be effectively migrated
   to Ami Pro.

====================================================================

Using Document Conversion Manager for OS/2
------------------------------------------

Use and setup of DCM is handled through the Conversion Folders.

Conversion is effected by either :

- Dropping documents onto the Conversion Folders.
  - Dropping an Ami Pro document onto the "Convert to DisplayWrite"
folder will produce a DisplayWrite/RFT document in that folder.
  - Dropping a DisplayWrite ".DOC" or DCA/RFT document onto the
"Convert to Ami Pro" folder will produce an Ami Pro document in
    that folder.

- Dropping documents onto the receiving application icon.
  - Dropping a DisplayWrite/RFT document onto the Ami Pro icon will
convert the document into Ami Pro format.

In both the above cases, if the Command-line or DDE option has been
enabled through the Set Application page of the Conversion Folder
notebook, the target application will be loaded - if not already
running - with the converted document.

- Opening the target Conversion Folder and selecting a document
  using the file-selection facility.

Configuring Document Conversion Manager for OS/2
          ------------------------------------------------

MODIFY SETTINGS
---------------

These controls mainly determine how converted text looks, and where
on the paper the text is to be presented.

Output file extension No change
                           Fixed as
                           Numeric incrementing from
Display units Inches
                           Centimeters
                           Points

Printer The choice of printer may dictate
                           available fonts and form sizes/orientations.
Different font and paper mapping may be done
                           for each printer.
Output paper Source form or any other paper size
                           available.

Top crop area Initial values will be obtained from the
Bottom crop area selected printer. If text margins infringe
Left crop area these values, text will be repositioned at
Right crop area the crop area. Any value up to a total of
1/3 of the paper width may be input.

Set margins This will fix the document margins at the
values set in the crop areas.
Linedraw action Replace linedraw characters with spaces
(ie strip); with bar characters, or with a
font containing the linedraw character set.
Linedraw font Select the linedraw font.
Maintain text position Causes text positioned by required backspace
and ZICR controls to be positioned within
                           a frame.
Maintain formatted text Causes text generated by controls to be
converted as body text. The control
                           generating the text is stripped.
Body text adjustment Enables the last typing line in a DCA/RFT
document to be increased in 1/100"
increments, which can stop Ami Pro breaking
                           pages too early.
Page breaks Forces all pages to be terminated with a
                           required page break.
Set absolute tabs Sets DCA/RFT tabs with respect to the
page edge rather than to the left margin.
Use tables only Translates Ami Pro multi-column text as
                           tables.
Set prompted stops Translates Ami Pro bookmarks as single and
multibyte controls to maintain the comment
portion into DW370. The dual control is
picked up by the DisplayWrite READER as a
single control on the round-trip to re-create
                           the bookmark with comment.
Use space above/below Translates space above/below as either
                           RCR or sub/superscript controls, or
                           ignores any value.
Stops for bullets Translates all Ami Pro bullet characters to
                           DCA periods.
Use counter controls Translates Ami Pro numeric bullets to DCA
counter controls, or the text equivalent of
                           the control.
Sonoran width scaling Allows the average character width to be
scaled accurately relative to the effective
                           pitch.
Strip Non-Text Objects If you are not using protocol driven
                           printers, graphics may cause printing
problems. Use this control to strip
                           graphics from your documents
                           when converting to DCA-RFT.
Ignore Right Indents This control causes any right indention
to be ignored when converting to DCA-RFT,
to reduce the number of LineFormatChanges.
Map Extended Character If your DW370, environment does not
  Set support graphics/extended character set,
then any character that would have had a
match in that set can be mapped to a
                           default character.

FONT MAPPING
============

Converting from Ami Pro to DCA-RFT
----------------------------------

Select the type of mapping required and optionally set the DisplayWrite
column margins. Text will be fully reformatted between the selected
column margins. Go to the selected Font Map page and set up your map.

Map Type 1
----------
Standard Font Map - Convert Ami Pro fonts to complementary DCA-RFT
typestyles. Use this map if for every incoming
font there is a matching DCA-RFT typestyle.

The Available Input Fonts are DisplayWrite typestyles.
DOCFONT.INI is the source for this list box.
The Source font is the Ami Pro font which is to be mapped to one
or more DCA typestyles.

An Ami Pro scaleable font will need to be mapped to multiple
typestyles. eg Ami Pro font Courier will need to be mapped to
typestyles 10,85 & 223 in the event that font Courier is used
at 12pt, 10pt and 8pt. The conversion process will map the
incoming font to a typestyle that gives the nearest match.

Press SAVE to form the map.

OR

Map Type 2
----------
Custom Font Map - Convert Ami Pro fonts to a range of typestyles
of equal width ie 12 pitch. Use this map to
create uniform output for DCA-RFT. Map specific
fonts and sizes to exact DCA-RFT typestyles,
which can then be re-mapped to the correct
Ami Pro font and size for the roundtrip in the
Convert to Ami Pro Conversion Folder.

The source font is the Ami Pro document font at a specified size
which will map to a DCA Typestyle.

Press SAVE to form the map.

OR

Map Type 3
----------
Single output font - Convert all Ami Pro fonts to a single DCA-RFT
                     typestyle.

Press SAVE to form the map.

NOTE
----
A Conversion Folder can have only one active font map.
If you need multiple mappings set up additional Conversion Folders
through the Conversion Templates

Defaults
========
Unmapped incoming fonts will convert to a nearest match typestyle.

Converting from DisplayWrite/RFT to Ami Pro
===========================================

Standard Font Map
-----------------
The Unmapped Input Fonts are DisplayWrite typestyles.
The Target font is the required Ami Pro font.
Multiple typestyles can be mapped to a single Target font.

To map a typestyle, select the typestyle(s) and press the MAP
button. The selection(s) will appear in the Mapped typestyle box.

Custom Font Map
---------------
The Unmapped Input Fonts are DisplayWrite typestyles.
The Target font is the required Ami Pro font.
Point size is the height of the required Ami Pro font.

To map a typestyle, select the typestyle and the required Ami Pro
font and point size and press the MAP button. The selection will
appear in the Mapped typestyle box.

Defaults
--------
Unmapped fixed pitch typestyles map to font Courier.
Unmapped proportional spaced serifed/sans serifed typestyles will
map to Times Roman and Helv respectively.

====================================================================

ADD FONT
--------
Documents may contain fonts that are not included in the default
font list. Use this page to enable these fonts for mapping.
The notebook will need to be closed and reopened for the font map
list to be updated.

====================================================================

SET APPLICATION
---------------

This page defines an application association for the current
Conversion Folder. An application name with full path must be
entered for the association to be formed.
If the application supports command line launching, tick the box.
If the application can respond to DDE instructions, enter the DDE
information on the sub-page.

Ami Pro DDE information is automatically entered during folder
instantiation.

If the application accepts drag/drop then the icon is enabled for
conversion.

====================================================================

TEMPLATES
---------

Templates allow multiple definitions of conversion set-up.
Each implementation of the DisplayWrite editor has different properties.
Some may have scaleable fonts, or may not support numbered lists,
or use of stop and prompted-stop codes, or line-draw. These features
may need to be handled differently when documents are shared across a
divers organisation

Example :
An organisation has DW370, DW5 and Ami Pro. Line-draw is used
in DW5 and Ami Pro but not in DW370.

Drag two DisplayWrite/RFT templates to the DCM folder or the desktop.
Select one of the Conversion Folders and open the notebook at "Modify Settings", and change the Line-draw option to "Use bar characters",
change the folder title to "Convert to DW370" and exit.
Select the other Conversion Folder and at the "Modify Settings" page
choose "Use extended char. set", change the folder title to
"Convert to DW5" and exit.

When converting documents decide which conversion is appropriate and
use that folder. The same thing can be done for Ami Pro, which allows
line-draw to be stripped or converted as bar characters or spaces.

Because multiple definitions are allowed multiple applications can be
seamlessly enabled for conversion services. Each Conversion Folder
controls the shape of the information passed to a defined application.
