[1] On the Net by David LeBlanc

The answer to the question about Stefan Petrucha's ESC <escape> is in
Comic Shop News #470 this week. It is a 4 issue limited series from
Comic. It is supposed to be out starting late June at $2.95.

This week brought a few things to the mailbox worth mentioning. You'll
see my review of STEVEN'S COMICS #3, a Xeric Foundation winner by David
Kelly. I got the Innocent Bystander newsletter #1 as well, which makes
mention of our review of IB #2 and give the URL to our website, thanks
Gary. I also got some advanced photocopies from my friend Angelo Furlan
of his next project called STUF. If you think Catfish is just about sexy
super heroes and the like this will correct that thought. More about
that another time.

CBG this week had the finalists for the Fan Awards which as I type this
will be awarded tonight in Chicago. You can bet we'll have the winners
list next time around. Also, this CBG had the Comic Club list which I
thought had been discontinued. Don't be confused by our listing as it
still carries the old Web page address. We'll correct that before they
run it again.

I decided to include Jeff Mason's latest contribution to finding your
way around the Comic Industry, his "Resource Guide". This is a listing
of various media companies, and people that might be helpful to those
who need to make those contacts to promote product or for any reason.

Lastly, we see another giant of the industry pass from this world. I
was saddened to learn of the death of *the* Superman artist in my mind.
I speak of course of Curt Swan. Having grown up with comics in the 60's
and 70's it was Swan who defined the Man of Steel as well as the Legion
of Super Heroes for me. His style to this day is instantly recognizable
and those who admire the flash in the pan gone in a year or two hot
artist would do well to study the technique of this most respected artist
of long standing. He has given me something that lives on, even past his
own time with us - the memory of Superman will always be a Curt Swan
picture in my mind. Thanks for that Curt, and God rest your soul.

Subject: I'm connected again!

Finally, I'm hooked up to a decent provider again! And I've got
an OFF-LINE READER!!!!!!!
Just so you're warned, I'll be popping a copy of STUF #1 in the
mail for you on Monday. The book itself won't be solicited 'til
October, so there's still time for changes in the text, and I plan on
making a few changes. I'd be interested in any feedback from you.

[Got it in the mail on Friday and a quick glance looks pretty good. Who
did the art?]

Also, I'll be going to the Chicago Con next weekend. Now that I
can FINALLY send real mail again, I wonder if you'd like me to report
back on the Con for you? I'm sure I can find a few moments in my busy
schedule to churn out a few words. :>
Angelo Furlan Writer/Creator of SINNAMON, BRUISER, STUF, and whatever
else we can find money to publish.

[How can I turn down an offer like that? Angelo Furlan *is* Catfish
Comics and I hope some of you catch him at the Convention. I'll be
waiting for his report to put in a future issue. Anyone going to San
Diego want to volunteer to send in a report of your adventures? I love
reading those things since I don't get to the big ones, and I'm sure
others will enjoy the vicarious thrill as well.]

Dave,
Some questions.

1) What is the address to CBG?
2) What is the address to CSN?
3) Did you get a telnetable site?

I am wanting to get the CSN and CBG, but no place around here carries it.

One year subscription is $36.95 MUCH cheaper than buying it at
retail every week for $2.95 each.($153.40). If you write to them
and ask they WILL send a sample issue for you to check out.

CSN is only available through retailers, they do not have subscriptions.
You can write them @

No choice on CSN but you would be better off getting CBG by mail.

I was wondering what you need to run an e-mag. Can someone like me with
a text editor, and Internet e-mail(only) access do it? and would I need
a different offline reader to cross post the messages? I've been
thinking about starting one & since the CBEM is a good one I figured
you'd be a good person to ask. thanks!

             Jeremy Dennis
   Internet: Jeremy.Dennis@lroom.org

Jeremy:

Text editor & Email only? Theoretically yes. As it gets bigger the
size of the issue can dictate whether or not the Email software can
handle the entire thing or if you have to break it up into more than one
part. Also you will need the ability to create the message and store it
offline and should have Email software that can automatically address the
message to MANY people through a *nickname* or similar feature.

What I do is compile most of the issue, if not all, using a plain but
robust ascii editor. I copy and paste parts from Email, press releases,
web page text, and newsgroup and other like forums for discussion. I
then load the entire issue into OLX, my offline reader. This is because
the text is easily formatted to the right width (something my ascii text
editor doesn't easily do but I prefer it anyway) and the spell checker
has lots of terms I have added that are unique to comics, since I use it
for offline mail as well. Using OLX also makes it easier to export parts
to messages for BBS messages, like the CBN Insider, every week.

Once complete I export the message as text and delete the REP file,
since I don't upload the mag to BBS services as a message. I then use
that text file to build a message in my Email software. I use Eudora,
many others are available. I like the way it handles the address book,
with lots of names (I send to hundreds) and the Blind carbon copy
feature. I prepare 4 copies, each to 1/4 of the subscribers, while
offline. Then I sign on to the Internet provider and send the mail.

It is a lot of work if you want to be good enough to get increasing
readership. Lots of self praise of how great your mag is, turns people
off - they will look for flaws. Try to be original and informative, or
fun or whatever tack you want.

Good luck.

Dear Mr. LeBlanc:

Congratulations on another great issue. You all are doing a terrific
job. Thank you very much for sending me such a nice cheesy price. I'm a
big John Byrne fan and the moment I saw your next trivia question I just
couldn't pass this chance to say something about my idol. Since I
already won last week this letter is not intended for participation in
your contest.

John Byrne's first published was "Doomsday +1" from the now defunt
Charlton Comics. It lasted six issues. Later Fantagraphics Books
re-released the entire series under the title "The Doomsday Squad!"
including the rare seventh issue, which only saw print in a fanzine. this
new editions were recolored by Mark Wheatley and Kathryn Mayer.

[Wrong guess, even though it don't count]

I also wish to make a call to any Freakasoid fans out there. I'm looking
for a first season episode guide and a list on all the articles about
this series published. Please e-mail me to EmilioTorr@aol.com.

BOCA RATON, Fla., June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- BIG Entertainment, Inc.
(Nasdaq: BIGE), today announced it has signed an agreement for a joint
publishing program with Harper Collins, one of the largest publishers in
the world and a wholly owned subsidiary of The News Corporation, a global
media company whose diversified operations include Fox Broadcasting,
Twentieth Century Fox, TV Guide, more than 128 newspapers, and other
media interests worldwide. The agreement provides for an advance to BIG
Entertainment in the mid-six figures.

This program has two components, Hardcover Novels, and Illustrated
Novels:
          (i) Hardcover Novels: HarperPrism, a division of HarperCollins,
licensed from BIG Entertainment the North American book rights to
publish novels based on the following concepts created for BIG by the
following best-selling authors:

NAME OF PROPERTY
Anne McCaffrey's "Acorna: Queen of the Unicorns(TM)"
          Isaac Asimov's "I-BOTS(TM)"
Margaret Weis' "Testament of the Dragon(TM)"

Anne McCaffrey's "Acorna" will be written by Anne McCaffrey and
Margaret Ball; and Margaret Weis' "Testament of the Dragon" will be
written by Margaret Weis and David Baldwin. The novels will be
distributed by HarperCollins throughout the mass market, including major
bookstore chains, with BIG Entertainment receiving royalties on sales of
the novels.

(ii) Illustrated Novels: HarperCollins will also publish Illustrated
Novels based on the aforementioned properties and distribute them to the
mass market, including bookstores. The Illustrated Novels may feature
original stories and ancillary material to immerse readers in the story.
Presented in a new-styled format, Illustrated Novels are text stories
combined with character sketches, timelines, blueprints, schematics,
maps, charts and other original background information that enhances the
story for the reader. BIG Entertainment will receive royalties on the
sales of the Illustrated Novels in the mass market, and BIG retains the
right to market, sell and distribute the Illustrated Novels to the comic
book market.

"We are delighted to be working with such an established and
successful publisher as HarperCollins, which intends to aggressively take
these entertainment properties into the mass market," stated Mitchell
Rubenstein, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BIG Entertainment.
"This agreement is another step in BIG's strategy to license its
entertainment content to major media companies."

The properties to be included in this innovative program are: Anne
McCaffrey's "Acorna: Queen of the Unicorns," featuring Acorna, a part
human, part unicorn creature by Anne McCaffrey, considered by many to be
the #1 best-selling fantasy author in the world; Isaac Asimov's "I-BOTS,"
chronicling the development of futuristic robotic technology conceived by
Isaac Asimov, one of the leading science fiction writers of the Twentieth
Century; and Margaret Weis' "Testament of the Dragon," the tale of a
dragon-possessed, immortal human by best-selling author Margaret Weis,
known for her popular role-playing games and numerous sword and sorcery
novels, many of which have appeared on the New York Time Best-Seller
list.

Dave Drew reports this item from the San Diego Union:

Jim Lee's Wildstorm Productions will be teaming up with GTE
Entertainment (of Carlsbad, CA) to bring Jim Lee's newest creations to
cyberspace. According to the article, "Their ambitious project,
tentatively called Siege, will start as a new comic book series, but its
military characters will later come alive in a multiplayer game for
computer networks like the Internet, where players can assume the roles
of various characters and take the comicbook story line in new
directions."

From there on, there will be occasional new comic book stories to
bring new plot twists, characters, and armaments to keep people
interested in the game.

Siege will be GTE Entertainment's first online game to be produced for
the GTE network, a computer entertainment network being developed for
the phone company GTE Corp. Siege is expected to debut in early 1997,
around the same time when GTE's dial up gaming network is expected to
be up and running. If the network isn't up by that time, the article
says that there should be a stand alone CD-ROM available.

Wildstorm was also said to be working on a live action Siege
television show, as well as a Gen 13 movie. (Keep in mind that they're
saying they're working on getting it going. That could mean no more
than they're submitting concepts to various studios. Nothing definite
was mentioned.)

Also according to the article, Wildstorm is working with Electronic
Arts to work on a Gen 13 game, but Wildstorm president John Nee said
in the article that it won't be anywhere near as elaborate as the
Siege game.

The article says to expect the first Siege comic book in December and
subsequent issues to come out every six weeks.

Diamond Comic Distributors and Viz Communications recently announced that
the publisher's line-up of new products will once again be available from

be available to Diamond and its retailers through the Diamond Star
System. Now Viz will be making its frontlist products available as well,
including ongoing comic book titles, graphic novels, trade paperbacks,
videos, and more. Retailers and consumers will see new products from Viz
offered in the July edition of Diamond's Previews catalog, for September
shipping. (New products which have already been solicited by another
distributor will be noted as "Available for the first time in Previews"
on the July Previews Order Form.)

[4] Legendary Superman Artist Curt Swan Dies

Curt Swan, the artist whose drawings fueled children's fantasies for
30 years, was found dead at his home in Norwalk, Connecticut on Sunday,
June 16. He was 76. The cause of death had not been determined at press
time.

"Curt Swan was the artist who made Clark Kent's wink an invitation to
share Superman's secret and world," said DC Comics Executive Vice
President & Publisher Paul Levitz. "The humanity of his artwork and his
consummate professionalism made him the model for Superman's many artists
over the past four decades."

Fresh out of military service in 1945, Swan was introduced to comics
by longtime writer France Herron, who brought him to the attention of DC
Comics' Editor Mort Weisinger. Assigned a Boy Commandos story on the
strength of the illustrations he had provided for the Army's Stars &
Stripes magazine, Swan soon established himself not only as one of DC's
most dependable and versatile pencillers, but as DC's foremost cover
artist during the 1950s. In 1955, he began a run on Superman that lasted
30 years, adding another Superman title, Action Comics, in 1970.

Heavily influenced by noted illustrators Norman Rockwell and John
Whitcomb, Swan's work was distinguished by its realistic line and
expressiveness. Said to have drawn more Superman pages than any other
artist, Swan also worked on Legion of Super-Heroes, Batman, and many
other titles. More recently, Swan worked on issues of Superman, The
Batman Chronicles and Swamp Thing, as well as designs for prestige
Superman merchandise in the Warner Bros. Studio Stores.

Swan is survived by his ex-wife Helene Swan and three children. Cards
or letters may be sent to the Swan Family in care of his daughter,
Cecelia Swan Swift, at 573 Valley Road, New Canaan, CT 06840.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations in
Curt's name be sent to:

[6] Review:STEVEN'S COMICS by David Kelly David LeBlanc

STEVEN'S COMICS #3 B & W , color cover $3.00 - DKPress
created & self published by David Lawrence Kelly
and funded by a grant from the Xeric Foundation
DKPress@aol.com http://www.winternet.com/~oprairie/

I received this odd sized (for me) comic in the mail last week with a
note from David Kelly the creator. The book is about 2/3 the size of
a normal comic and is a collection of 6 panel black and white strips per
page, 32 pages in all. The art reminds me of the cartoon show on
Nickelodeon, "Doug" for some reason. It is very detailed when called for
with lots of narrative that takes up about a third of each panel. The
style is well suited for the type of comic, and David shows the ability
to move you from panel to panel while you relate the narrative to the
pictures.

This is the story of a dysfunctional family in the northwest whose father
has moved away after the divorce. There is Steven who is about 12, his
younger brother Tim, his sister Kim, two older teenage brothers Brad and
Randy and their mom. There is not much pretty about this story as it
deals with the harsh realities of life. David touches on many subjects
like divorce, child and spousal abuse, loss of a parent through death and
the problems they create in a young person's life.

Often we see Steven daydream about living with other *real* parents, as
if his own were fake, or moving in with friends who seem to have a
happier home life. We see the disappointments of children whose own
wishes get pushed aside by mom's new boyfriend and Dad's unwillingness to
meet his responsibilities. My parents divorced after I was out of
college, but my own teenage sister had a rougher time coping with the
changes going on at home so I can relate somewhat.

He also touches on budding homosexual tendencies in the lead character,
whose best friend reveals he dresses up and wants to kiss Donny Osmond.
The next strip is in celebration of "Queer Pride" and Steven tells us
that he likes Christopher because they both like things most boys don't
and that he doesn't have to pretend with Christopher. This is one of
the few bright spots in his life. The theme is touched on later as he
envisions himself as a showgirl in Vegas, Miss Stephanie. The point is
not belabored, just touched on as one facet in the big picture.

I found this comic to be very sensitive in its approach to some very
hard subjects. Kelly deals with them honestly and with much insight that
you are immersed in the character as if he was telling you of his own
childhood, though there is no indication that he is. It is also set back
in time to the seventies so the impact of a few references may not catch
with the younger crowd. Overall it is well worth the cover price and the
kind of product that helps spread the notion that comics are not just
heroes in spandex. This one is not for everyone, but has a lot to make
you think about if you are willing to try.

The original mini-comics #1 and #2 are available for $1 and $2
respectively and DK press offers Boy Trouble #2 by David Kelly and Robert
Kirby for $3.

the world, many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you
have the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal
Emulation software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the
many systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs).
Most of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book
Network...

There are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as
well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention
sections for general conversation, collecting, gaming and other forms
of entertainment.

If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most if
not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download a .QWK
packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called an offline
mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure, and then
upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your local BBS.
There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer
system. They all give you a better explanation in their documentation
than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are
free to download from most BBS's. I recommend SLMR or OLX-TD for DOS to
get started.

These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading
replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the
average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is
LESS THAN $.75! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial
information services available! :)

So what else can you find on free BBS systems? There are plenty of files
for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of
message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like
sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online
games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system
sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most
powerful being in a online adventure!

And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to
ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of
replies and all the help you need to join in the fun!

specifically for this electronic magazine. Some articles are
independent of any connection with CBN and are used with permission.

All text contained within is copyrighted to the originating author(s).
Opinions expressed in this publication are those of the authors and
do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of the Editor, the
Network Administration Team or the members and users of The Comic Book
Network.

Except where elsewhere noted, The Comic Book Network Electronic
Magazine is Copyright 1996 by the Comic Book Network.

THE CBN WEB PAGE
----------------
If you have access to the World Wide Web, please stop by and visit our
web page! On our web page, you can find the latest issue of our E-Mag,
as well as an annotated index and all back issues. You'll also find
important information on how to join the conversation in the Comic Book
Net, and other neat features like newly released comic book graphics,
links to lists of Comic Book Company addresses, Comic Professionals Email
addresses, and other Comic Book related Web pages!

The URL address is: http://members.aol.com/ComicBkNet

LOCATING THE ISSUES
-------------------
The latest issue is always available from all the systems linked into The
Comic Book Network. You can also find the back issues at America Online,
by going to Keyword: Science Fiction, scrolling to the menu item _Comic
Book Forum_ and then going to the _Comics Library_ from there. Most issues
should also be available on Compuserve, Genie, Channel1 BBS and Software
Creations BBS as well as other non CBN affiliated Bulletin Board Systems.
All back issues should be available at the above sites, as well as our
World Wide Web page.

SUBMISSIONS
-----------
To submit an article, review, column, etc to our e-mag, simply post it
in any Comic Book Net conference and leave me a message in the
CBN: E-Mag conference giving me permission to use the article. If you
cannot access the Comic Book Net, submit your articles for consideration
to the editor at: ComicBkNet@aol.com

Reviews of mainstream books are least likely to get included when
submitted from sources outside of CBN. We give more consideration
to reviews of indies and self published material as we feel that
material deserves more exposure to the general public.
Commentary on the state of the industry, and personal observations
and reflections related to comics are *most* likely to be included
in our publication.

We also accept product for review purposes. Advanced copies of comic
books will not be returned but anything sent to us will be reviewed in
the ComicBook Net Emag. Send all material to:

David L. LeBlanc
84 Heather Circle
Jefferson, MA 01522-1419

SUBSCRIPTIONS
-------------
If you wish to receive each issue automatically through your Email
account, please address a message to ComicBkNet@aol.com to be
