 1. CHAPTER INTRODUCTION

This chapter identifies most of the keyboard commands that
are used with Windows applications. A few JAWS keyboard
commands are also described to help you get started. A complete
list of JAWS cursor commands are presented in the next chapter.

To activate the PC cursor, press SPEECH PAD PLUS.
The PC cursor is active when JAWS is first loaded.

To activate the JAWS cursor, press SPEECH PAD MINUS.

2. STARTING/QUITTING JAWS AND WINDOWS

Automatic Loading of Windows and JAWS
If you installed JAWS from within Windows, then JAWS
has been added to your Windows Startup group. This
means that JAWS starts whenever Windows starts, and
you do not need to do anything else to load JAWS.

Manual Loading of JAWS from within Windows
If you have removed the JAWS icon from the Windows
Startup group, then you must load JAWS manually. You
can start JAWS in one of several ways. You can choose
the JAWS icon from the "JFW" program group of Program
Manager, or you can load JAWS with the Run dialog of
Program Manager. To start JAWS with the Run dialog,
press ALT+F to activate the Files menu, and then press R
to display the Run dialog. In the command edit field, type
     "C:\JFW\JFW.EXE" and press ENTER.

Manual Loading of Windows and JAWS from a DOS Prompt
If you installed JAWS from a DOS prompt, then you will
need to type a command at a DOS prompt to load Windows
and JAWS. A batch file for loading Windows and JAWS
was installed in your \JFW subdirectory for this purpose.
At a DOS prompt type "RUNJFW" and then press ENTER.

If you wish to add JAWS to your Program Manager
Startup group so that JAWS can start automatically, then
you can find instructions for doing this in Chapter 1 of the
     JAWS Technical Reference.

9. TEXT SELECTION AND EDITING KEYS

When you begin to select text with one of these
commands, the text you select begins at the location of the
insertion point. If text is already selected, then the use of the
command cancels the previous selection. Selecting text means
that you are highlighting it (or blocking it) in preparation for doing

begin by selecting the word, and then choose the delete
command.
