A TAINO NATIVE AMERICAN BBS

I recently received a message on my board from Peter
Torres regarding the Hummingbird BBS Service. He wanted to make
sure I included information about the board being part of the
SmartNet and has the goal of bringing the Native Americans and
Hispanics together and helping them get back in touch with their
Native American roots.
With my nose for news I called Peter to find out what's
going on. The Hummingbird Bulletin Board Network is ( run by the
Network Sysops: Peter Torres and Fred Alvarado of Vineland, NJ )
one of only four Native American boards in the United Sstates. The
Colibri is a major Native American information center and that's
how the conferences are set up. "We're hooked up with some other
Native American boards in the U.S.A. including Alaska and South
America. So we keep abreast of things and we pull All Native
American and Hispanics people together to give them a place where
they can communicate. You see there are a lot of people who are
part Native American, like the Taino people from the Caribbean
Islands and Florida. What seems to happen is they loose track of
their roots and when they want to locate their families, we help
them find them, if they're looking for their roots. Sometimes
they call with spiritual questions, we try to help them find
those answers too.", says Mr. Torres....
The North American Natives Conference and the Taino
Conference on SmartNet originated from Colibri BBS and has become
a major source and file base. Beyond the BBS, Mr. Torres is the
President of the Taino Inter-Tribal Council Inc. a Native American
Non Profit organization in New Jersey, The Inter-Tribal Council has
a major Taino Indigenous Documentation Project, to help the Taino
Indigenous people get back the roots that the Spanish colonial had
raped them of their Native American heritage. Mr. Torres also does
officially represents the Taino Indian people living in New Jersey
and the Colibri BBS of Vineland, " We give Native Americans and
Hispanics support. What we're trying to do is put computers on all
the U. S. reservations and give the Hispanic Communities within the
United States tech help. We're trying to build something using a
modern day instrument to better communicate with the people, and
keep the people tied to issues and things of major importance to
the Indian and Hispanic nations".
In addition to supporting the Native American and Hispanic
communities The Hummingbird Bulletin Board is a great source for
students doing research on the subject. So file this information
away for when school starts. Every time a teacher let us pick the
subject of a report or composition I always chose a subject that
I had access to "special" information on. Peter says "There are
loads of echo Mail tech conferences, files and stuff they can get
a hold of". So check out another great resource of New Jersey.
The BBS number is (609) 825-7922 (Millville, New Jersey) The
Computer Network does operate on PCBoard 15.21, with an IBM 486 DX2
50 MHZ main server and IBM 386 DX 33 nodes, supports baud rates
2400 to 14,400. They have SmartNet, NATIVnet, DisputeNet, FriendsNet
and PlanetEarth Net InterNational mail echo exchanges. Do note that
the Internet and the World Wide Web, will soon be coming on line at
the Millville, New Jersey site of the Hummingbird/ Colibri BBS.
