CAT Currents:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now that Summer is finally over, most people are back to school or
back to work... Here at CAT, it was a VERY slow summer. In the
beginning of June, we announced our current video project to help
gay, lesbian and bisexual (GLB) teens develop self-esteem and to
prevent suicides. Being new to the issue, we mistakenly assumed the
GLB community would rally around a common cause: GLB youth. We have
since learned about the fear of many GLB adults (potential
supporters). Many adults feel they've been hurt and unfairly accused
of being child molesters who recruit youngsters into the "homosexual
lifestyle." Obviously these accusations are false. We will stick by
our plan to produce the video, as well as provide factual, honest and
age appropriate information for GLB youth through this newsletter and
our Web site. Since June 5, we have received only $150 in donations.
Our phone bill for June was $250!!! It is clear we can not continue
to operate with this lack of financial support. This project is in
serious danger of failing...
We are an all-volunteer non-profit organization, including the
administration. Claude DiDomenica, the President of CAT recently
said, "You know you run a progressive non-profit when the only food
in the house is food for the cat..." Many people have complemented us
on our newsletter and the CAT Web site. They enjoy the original
articles and information. Recently, Bessie Hadley our Executive
Director, spoke with a potential supporter who said, "I saw your
newsletter on America On-line." The word is getting out and the
emotional support, if NOT the financial support, is there. Another
hurdle we face is that we are not a direct service organization. We
don't feed the homeless. It is easy to be charitable when you can see
the face of a starving child. Our goal for long term prevention and
education is a contribution just as important as providing shelter
for the homeless. Any project to encourage self-esteem in today's
youth is a worthwhile project. Preventing the suicide of a GLB
teenager should be just as important...
If you want us to continue this life saving educational project for
GLB youth, PLEASE send a check (a tax-deductible donation) to:
Children's Animated Television, Inc.
1492 Highland Ave, Suite 3
Needham, MA 02192
Remember, everyone should want a brighter future for GLB teens...
Update from last week:
HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE TO HOLD HEARINGS ON
"THE HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA IN SCHOOLS"
TO:   NACYSO Participating Organizations and other Youth Advocates
FROM: Rea Carey, Coordinator, National Advocacy Coalition on
      Youth and Sexual Orientation
CONGRESS POSTPONES ATTACKS ON GLBT YOUTH ---
URGENT ACTION NEEDED TO CANCEL HEARING!!!
Congressional staff of Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.), chair of the
Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Economic and
Educational Opportunities Committee, has confirmed that the
previously scheduled hearing on homosexuality and the schools has
been postponed. The hearing is being billed as a hearing on "Parental
Involvement in Social Issues in Education." The hearing was scheduled
for September 12, at the request of Lou Sheldon of the radical right
"Traditional Values Coalition."
[ End ] YOUR ACTION IS STILL NEEDED!
Word as of yesterday is that hearings will occur and that Gingrich
did promise them to Rev. Lou Sheldon. Hoekstra's office is not yet
releasing the witness list but you can bet it'll be stacked. The
hearing currently is named "Parental Involvement in Social Issues in
Education." It has been postponed but will likely occur between the
end of September and Thanksgiving. It allegedly will address the
following 3 focus areas with perhaps a 4th to be added later:
1) Sex education and abstinence
2) Condom distribution in schools
3) Homosexual curricula (sic)
Grassroots action is needed to cancel the hearing!!!
*****ACTION STEPS*****
1) Contact Rep. Peter Hoekstra's office and insist that his
subcommittee CANCEL the hearing on "Parental Involvement in Social
Issues in Education." Members of Congress were elected to work on
critical problems facing this country, NOT to wage attacks on youth
and their families! Hoekstra's office: (202)225-4401.
(Majority Chief of Staff: Jay Eagen, (202) 225-4527).
You can E-Mail Congressperson Hoekstra <tellhoek@hr.house.gov>,
though you will get an email form response telling you that he will
not snail mail respond to anyone outside his district.
2) Call the other subcommittee members and give them the same
message! U.S. Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121. (Minority Chief of
Staff: Gail Weiss (202) 225-3725).)
Subcommittee:
Republicans: Hoekstra (Mich.) Chair; Barrett (NE); Ballenger (NC);
Cunningham (CA); McKeon (CA); Castle (DE); Weldon (FL); Goodling(PA).
Democrats: Sawyer (OH) Chair; Martinez (CA); Reed (RI); Roemer (IN);
Scott (VA); Green (TX).
3) Call your own Representatives and express your concerns about the
hearing. U.S. Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121.
Tip of the week:
Poison prevention for the home
1) Keep items such as soap, cleaners, insecticides, and detergents
   away from kids. These products can be toxic. They should be kept
   in their original, labeled containers and behind cabinet doors
   with child-resistant latches.
2) Keep medications away from children. Install a lock or
   child-resistant latch on medicine cabinets. Buy medicines with
   child-resistant packaging. Do not give your children any
   medication without first consulting a physician. Have a bottle of
   syrup of ipecac handy to induce vomiting, but use only if advised
   by the Poison Control Center or a physician.
3) Know the sources of carbon monoxide - a poisonous gas with NO
   smell. Carbon monoxide sources in your home include:
   * room heaters, furnaces and water heaters
   * charcoal grills, ranges and fireplaces
   * a car running idle inside a garage
   Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include dizziness, fatigue,
   headache, nausea, and irregular breathing. A carbon monoxide
   detector can be a life-saving device for your home.
4) Know your plants! Many plants are poisonous if ingested. Remove
   toxic plants from your home or put in an unreachable area.
   Remember to keep them away from children and pets.
5) Keep the phone number to the Poison Control Center listed by the
   telephone for quick reference. Most areas have this number listed
   in the front of the telephone book. If you can't find the number
   for your area, the National Poison Control Center phone number is:
   1-800-498-8666.
As you read this information, you may be thinking, "I already know
all this." But you never know when an emergency might arise. You'd be
surprised how many times that simple things were overlooked and
resulted in tragedy. You CAN be prepared to protect your children
against these common household poisons.
CRISIS IN MERRIMACK:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings... This week CAT is providing for you a list of people
and newspapers to contact in regards to "Crises in Merrimack."
In case you didn't know, the School Board of Merrimack, New Hampshire
voted into policy on August 14, 1995:

Policy 6540--Prohibition of Alternate (sic) Lifestyle Instruction
"The Merrimack School District shall neither implement nor carry out
any program or activity that has either the purpose or effect of
encouraging or supporting homosexuality as a positive lifestyle
alternative. A program or activity, for purpose of this item,
includes the distribution of instructional materials, instruction,
counseling, or other services on school grounds, or referral of a
pupil to an organization that affirms a homosexual lifestyle."

The above policy is discriminatory, shows no compassion or love and
allows the Merrimack School Board the unwise power of censorship.
The policy flies in the face of everything that is decent, just and
fair in our American society... People from all backgrounds must
stand up and fight for the rights of our nation's youth...

GLB Youth Advisor:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CAT's current video project is on GLB teen self esteem. Our goal
is to help put a stop to the unacceptably high rate of GLB teen
depression and suicide. We also believe there is a direct correlation
between low self esteem and unsafe sex practices. To this aim, as a
public service we present to you the GLB Youth Advisor...
What if???
~~~~~~~~~~
A new feature to the popular CAT Chronicle is "What if???"
Our President, Claude DiDomenica will be writing a weekly column to
stimulate the minds of our youth and adults who haven't lost their
"youthful imaginations..."

What if there was no longer was any prejudice???
First of all, I probably wouldn't be writing this column in our
newsletter, because our world's problem with diversity is what
sparked the conception of CAT. No CAT equals no CAT Chronicle!

Perhaps people would be focusing on cleaning up our environment,
space exploration and the arts... On a personal note, I am a jazz
composer and guitarist. I really would like to return to my previous
"selfish existence" of playing my guitar and writing music. However,
my conscience won't permit that unless for some reason we fail and
have to give up CAT. For some time now I have been crying out to
anybody that would listen about CAT's lack of financial support.
So far, nobody has responded... I suppose next week's column might
be titled: "What if there was no CAT???" :(

The CAT Credo...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Children's Animated Television (CAT) believes in a positive future
for all children...
CAT's philosophy is to help solve today's complex social problems
through honest and open dialogue, education, information and
compromise...
CAT will produce video programs for pre-teens and teens to stimulate
their minds, harness their creativity and imaginations to cultivate
long-lasting answers to problems in their world...
As a public service, CAT will also provide educational information
using all available technology including a computer bulletin board,
World Wide Web site and other electronic media. CAT will supply this
knowledge for children, parents and educators to enable our society
to develop ideas and solutions for a better tomorrow...
