Subj: AUCTION FOR JOEY

"I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that
I can do, or kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do
it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way
again."

On July 1st in Worcester, MA there will be a fund raising event for the
Joeys Oil Fund to fight Leukodystrophy, the disease featured in the
movie "Lorenzo's Oil". The fund is administered by the Kennedy Krieger
Institute of Baltimore. This will be the second annual event in an
effort to keep alive the research that provides the precious medicine
that is giving hope to those terminally ill with the disease. The event
is the brainchild of Joseph Johnson whose son Joey has the
leukodystrophy.

Joe Johnson is the Sysop of a BBS - Call Again Soon (508) 791-1281
which supports the WME Network, which I am the Host of the Comic
Conference, and Comic Book Net which I serve as Network Admin Team
Member. He is a comic fan and was an early member of 4ColorNet which
later became ComicBook Net.

Joey Johnson is 8 years old and is deaf and blind from this disease.
The progress made in recent years have given the Johnson's hope for the
future as the downward spiral in Joey's health was reversed as a result
of medicine research at the Kennedy Kreiger Institute. The fund raiser
aids in providing dollars to keep that research alive and primes the
pump for government funds. Last year we raised over $1000 from an
auction of donated comics, and art and hope to do much better this year.

You can help by finding just one item in your collection that might be
worth something to collectors. Already we have pledges of Sandman #1,
X-Files #1, Rune #0 and more. Last year, through the generosity of
Marvel, DC, and Valiant we had many sought after premium comics and
pages of original art as well. Perhaps it is time to analyze wether you
could part with that premium comic that you happen to have but don't
really need. Perhaps it is time to show that kindness to a fellow
creature while there is time. After all, what is the value of one comic
book weighed against a human life?

Donations of comics and related items can be sent to;

Jefferson, MA 01522-1419

or

Joey's Oil Fund
c/o That's Entertainment
244 Park Avenue
Worcester MA 01609

If need be you can verify the validity of this campaign through the
Kennedy Kreiger Institute at 410-550-9460 at the Office of Development.

Everything must be sent to arrive by June 29 to be sure it will be
included in the auction. Please don't defer or neglect this.

We won't pass this way again.

 The 25th Hour
 By Mike Imboden

Well, deadline time looms and I'm without a topic! I gotta fill this
space with something, so it's time to tap the ol' brain cells, or at
  least what's left of them.

  thinking.....thinking.....thinking......thinking.....thinking......

Ok, got it. Here's a chance for YOU to create your own comic. Well,
ok, it's just a plot but we'll start with the basics first, ok?
It's pretty easy, just insert whatever type of word you are prompted
for just like that wonky kids game, Mad Libs.
  Have fun!

   ===================================================================

THE AGE OF THE SUPER HUMAN - THE ORIGIN

"Face ___[direction]___, true believers! Here's the story you've
   waited __[number]___ years for!"

As a freshman in high school ___[name of someone you know]___ was a
bit of a bookworm. All of the other kids teased him and his nebbish
ways. But ___[same name as above___] didn't mind, not really,
beacuse he was in reality an alien from the planet
___[nonsense word]___ and he knew he had a higher purpose on this,
the third planet from the star called Sol.

One day ___[same name as above]___ was walking home when he he saw

you chose]___ was heartbroken. That night, as he sat in the study
a ___[type of animal]___ smashed through the window.

"That's it!" cried ___[first name you chose]___.
"___[occupation from above]___ are a cowardly and
superstitious lot. I'll become a ___[type of animal from above]___
and fight crime until my dying day!"

Bobby made a costume out of ___[type of material]___ and dubbed
himself the ___[adjective]___ ___[animal from above]___.

Later, as ___[first name you chose]___ slept a lightning bolt
streaked in through his open bedroom window and hit him in the ___[a
body part]___. ___[first name you chose]___'s entire body seemed
to tingle with power. Getting up from bed ___[first name you
chose]___ decided to see if the lightning bolt had given him
super powers. It had! ___[first name you chose]___ discovered
that he could ___[verb]___ fast, ___[a different verb]___,
cling to ___[noun]___, shoot lasers from his ___[part of the
   head]___ and communicate with
   ___[a different animal than above]___.

In the years that followed ___[first name you chose]___ fought
numerous villains such as ___[military rank]___ ___[noun]___, the

 CSNsider
 by David Leblanc

This is the CSNsider from CSN #417, which will be in shops on 6/14/95.
It is reproduced in its entirety with the expressed permission of
COMIC SHOP NEWS.

Dan Jurgens, acclaimed writer/artist of Superman and Solar, was honored
with a Reuben Award in the Comic Book category from the National
Cartoon-ists Society ... Angel Medina has signed on to replace Liam Sharp
as the artist on Incredible Hulk; Medina had previously worked with Hulk
writer Peter David on Dreadstar... And speaking of The Incredible Hulk,
Peter David has written an original Hulk novel for Putnam's; look for it
to appear in hard cover in July... Acclaimed animator Friz Freleng died on
May 26th at the age of 89; during his career, Freleng worked on a number
of Warner Bros. cartoons, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the Road
Runner...

Look for a Sovereign Seven retail poster in August, with a Sovereign Seven
Annual following in the fall...

Tom DeFalco is moving over to become the writer of Amazing Spider-Man,
working with artist Mark Bagley...

The on-again, off-again quest to bring Stephen King's stories to comics is
on again, with two different companies talking about licensing King tales
for comics adaptations...

Pamela Anderson is set to begin work on the Barb Wire film, based on the
Dark Horse Heroes character; the film is slated for '96 release...

With the price of newsprint and other forms of paper used in comic book
printing soaring to record highs, another round of price increases are
almost inevitable later this year; in the past year, the prices of various
grades of paper have risen 54% to 148%, and more increases are likely --
so when you see a higher price on the cover of you're favorite comic,
there's a reason why! Some publishers are considering reducing the number
of pages and maintaining the same price, but no decisions have been made
yet...

Charles Vess, acclaimed comic book artist and cover illustrator, is
venturing into the world of self-publishing with the release of The Book
of Ballads and Sagas this October; Vess will illustrate ballads written by
Neil Gaiman, Jeff Smith, Elaine Lee, Sharyn McCrumb, Jane Yolen, Emma
Bull, and others, while Rob Walton will script the ongoing Nordic saga...

Alan Moore has signed on to write a story arc for Maximum Press' WarChild
series...

Dark Horse Comics has confirmed that they have secured the license to
bring Hasbro's GI Joe to comics once again; look for Dark Horse's first GI
Joe titles this fall...

Diane Duane's second original Spider-Man novel for Putnam's is scheduled
for fall release...

Fleer's first Marvel Comics collectible trading card game is now slated
for late summer/early fall release...

Claypool Comics has announced that Phantom of Fear City #12, which will
bring the series' long-running storylines to a close, will be the final
issue of the maxiseries...

Darren McGavin, star of the 1970's Kolchak the Night Stalker television
series that many see as a precursor to today's X-Files, recently confirmed
that conversations have taken place to have him guest star on an episode
of X-Files, but contractual problems concerning the defunct series
currently stand in the way...

Is Paramount looking at starting its own comic book line? Could be!

CSN #417 features a cover feature on Batman Legends of the Dark Knight #75
from DC, as well as more news and and exclusive interview with John Byrne!

It is reproduced in its entirety with the expressed permission of
COMIC SHOP NEWS.

Get ready for oodles o' Superman: not only has Lois & Clark been renewed
for a third season, but the final arrangements have been made to add a
Superman Animated Series to the WB Network lineup in the fall of '96
(thirteen episodes in '96 and 52 more the following year) -- and deals are
getting ever closer for a new big-screen Superman film in '97...

Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, hard at work on the Wolverine/Gambit: Victims
series, still found time for a third annual Batman Halloween Special,
Ghosts; look for it this fall, of course...

When Marvel and Fleer unleash their Marvel: Overpower collectible Card
game this August, fans can expect to find six different starter sets as
well as hundreds of booster cards available in affordable booster packs;
each of the six starter sets will offer the same cards in each set, but
boosters enable players to customize their sets...

Pinky and The Brain, the Animaniacs spinoff series, will not be seen on
Saturday mornings or on weekday afternoons; instead, it will join the WB
network schedule on Sunday nights at 7:30 pm!...

The new Vertigo series The Seekers, slated to debut this fall, is
described by those in the know as "X-Files meets the New Age"...

Berkey Breathed may be out of the comic strip biz right now, but his two
creations, Bloom County and Outland, will be featured in a new trading
card series slated for August release...

The second Vamps series, Vamps: Hollywood and Vein, will debut in the last
quarter of '95...

Fans have been wondering what was up with Omni Comix now that Omni
Magazine is becoming primarily an online-only mag; well, the answer is
that Omni Comix is still alive and well, continuing as a 112-page solo
comic book magazine...

The first Starman story arc by James Robinson and Tony Harris will be
collected in trade paperback... FPG is producing a new supplemental series
of a cards for Everway, Wizards of the Coast's new  collectible card game;
look for it later in '95...

Spawn will star in his own collectible card game later this summer,
courtesy of Caliber; the Spawn Collectible Card Game can be played by
itself or can be played in conjunction with Caliber's Powercardz game...

And if that isn't enough card games for you, then howsabout the Wildstorm
Collectible Card Game, featuring three hundred cards inspired by Gen 13,
Wetworks, WildCATs, Grifter, and other Wildstorm series?...

If you were one of the thousands of unlucky fans who missed out on the
limited edition hardcover of Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean's Mr. Punch,
here's some good news: a trade paperback edition will be released this
fall...

Topps is adding an X-Files Digest to its line in August, featuring new
material, background articles, and more.

CSN #418 features a cover feature on Lady Rawhide from Topps and is an
all-news issue with the CSN Charts thrown in for good measure. Also
shipping with #418 is the CSN Summer Preview, so be sure to stop by your
favotite comic shop and grab them both.

The only way to get Comic Shop News is to visit a shop that carries CSN.
The publication costs the shops just 10 CENTS each and is generally free to

/--[-5-]--/ KOMIC KOMMENTS /-------------------------------------------/

 Keady's Komic Komments
 By John Keady

Here are my reviews of the DC stuff I got this week!

Robin #19- Mike Weiringo makes his debut and his artwork is his usual
good! Ulysses Armstrong & Maxie Zues join forces as Robin frets over his
troubles with Ari. I was actually rather pleased with the storyline.
That Ulysses kid is one sick puppy! GOOD

Green Arrow #99- I picked this one up because of my interest in the
upcoming #100 confrontation with Superman. I wanted to see why Ollie
Queen is doing what he's doing. In the few times I picked this up, I've
always tended to like it. This is no different. Very well paced and I
will definatly get #100 to see the outcome! GOOD

Action #712- Superman finally finds Jimmy Olson in a trap set by the
late Conduit and must try to save him but saving him might kill him! Not
a bad issue. I was not thrilled with the art in this one but the story
was still pretty good. AVERAGE/GOOD

Guy Gardner #33- Well, I suppose that with Marc Campos beginning his run
as artist on this title would drive me out of this title as he did when
he messed up Extreme Justice.....almost. The story saves me from
wretching too heavily at the way too busy art! AVERAGE

Subj: Capital DOESN'T buy Frank

Ward Batty has brought something to my attention. This original post
was sent to rec.arts.comics.misc by Matt High of Antarctic Press. I
relayed it here as such, with the subject header Matt had assigned.

Relayed by Matt High of Antarctic Press:

NEWS: Capital City buys Friendly Frank's
From: Matthew High <antarc@texas.net>
Date: 24 May 1995 01:42:54 GMT

I haven't seen anyone break the news here yet, so I might as well.
The following message was posted to Compuserve by Paul Grant earlier
this afternoon.
-------------

Madison, Wis. -- Capital City Distribution, Inc., a leading
worldwide distributor of comic books, trading cards, games, videos,
and media and pop culture items, has acquired Friendly Frank's
Distribution, Inc. (FFD). Capital will begin servicing the hundreds
of FFD accounts immediately.

Under the terms of the agreement, Capital will assume responsibility
for all FFD purchase orders and outstanding retailer orders. It will
also assist in helping collect the company's accounts receivable.
--------------

NOW

Please note, they did not BUY FFD, but acquired FFD,assumed their orders
(presumedly the open orders for future shipments) and responsibility to
distribute product to the existing customers as well as collect
outstanding debts. BUT they did not BUY their assets nor accept
liability for their debts:

D.L.
----------
He emphasized that Capital is not buying most of FFD's assets or
liabilities, although the ongoing service of customers would be
Capital's responsibility.

----------

So, you say, what's the big deal?

Here is the correction posted by Ward Batty of Comic Shop News and my
apology for any misleading inference in the original Subject header:

**************
I appreciate your posting the press release, but your headline is wrong.
Capital is merely assuming FFD's accounts, it is NOT buying the company.
Capital is assuming FFD's assets without taking responsibility for its
back debts, so that publishers (like CSN) are being stiffed for the back
money owed us. To me, this is the same as my calling our distributor and
saying "My store Dr. No's is going out of business. However, another
store, Dr. Yes is opening up in the same location and will take Dr. No's
future orders, however, we aren't paying any of Dr. No's debts to you." Of
course no distributor would accept this, but they happily pull this on the
publishers who are expected to just take it. We're seriously considering a
suit against FFD for what they owe us unless they file for bankruptcy
(which they haven't said they are doing).

This sucks, but is typical of how things are done in this business.

/--[-8-]--/ FEEDBACK /-------------------------------------------------/

From: 100532.110@compuserve.com (Tim O'Shea)
To: ComicBknet@aol.com (INTERNET:ComicBknet@aol.com)

Hi,

The Emag is excellent. As a 28yr old parent of 2 very young boys, finances
are obviously stretched, and often the only way to keep up with comic book
news & issues is through the fan/industry press as I cannot afford to buy
all the comics I would want.

Do you have any U.K. BBS's?

Did you know that Marvel U.K. is to launch a 100 page Monthly comic to
reprint the X-Men from recent years (I believe that they are starting from
X-MEN #1) and also reprint the "classic" stories? It will retail at L1.99
which is about $3.20 for 4 full length stories in full colour.

Thanks again

Tim O'Shea

We are glad you enjoy our little effort. A lot of enthusiastic
members put a lot of effort into putting out the latest news,
interesting insight and commentary. It is good to know it is
     appreciated.

Is Canada part of the U.K.? *8^)

Not yet. Someday it could happen. Many of our member BBSs belong
to International networks such as FIDO and WME. All it takes is
one BBS that also transfers mail overseas to join in CBN. Perhaps
you could find a BBS local to you that carries such networks and
inquire about how they might pick up another U.S. Network? If they
have a specific U.S. node they poll, we could work on it from our
end if the SysOp on your end is willing to add CBN.

Marvel U.K. publications have all but died over here so we don't
see much information about them anymore. That is a good price for
a 100 page comic! They have already been reprinting the first
series and the stories from the restart with the all-new, all
different team so it was a good guess that this would see reprints
as well. Thanks for the info.

Write to us again with more insight on the market over there. You
can be our official overseas correspondent!

Subj: CBEM #12 Feedback

Welp...just checked out CBEM, and since I call em as I see 'em, here's
my call:

Mike's 25th hour was entertaining, with the reflection on DC's
presentations. The clumsiness of the deliverance really supports my theory
that DC/Diamond threw this exclusivity deal together at the last second,
simply because `Marvel's doing it, and we have to, too.'
The Superman Cartoon sounds exciting! I'll try to get them all on
tape, seeing as how the only other television Superman is Lois and Clark,
and all that relationship stuff makes me yawn. I mean, who cares if Lois
says yes or no to Clark? She'll say yes eventually, and either way, Status
quo will be maintained.
Anyone else think DC is shooting themselves in the foot by not
producing toys for Mass Markets? I for one would rather do without Superman
figures (which I've been looking forward to) than pay inflated comic
retailer prices.

Ry's Communications was also pretty slick. I don't really care for
Spider-Man or Tekno (but seeing the competition it was against, I suppose
Diamond would have to give it a gem). I'm also not much of a Majel
Roddenberry fan (after her incredibly rude behavior at a convention that I
(thankfully) did not get to attend), so I don't care what she had to say.
Oops! I also don't like Ultraverse or have cable or AOL access. Nor
do I like: Dan Jurgens, Maximum, Bone, Wonder Woman, Madman, or Bane. (call
me Mr Grumpy)
Still Ry, good variety of stuff. Maybe next time I'll be on the edge
of my seat...

All in all, keep up the good work!
