/--[-1-]--/ THE 25TH HOUR /--------------------------------------------/

 The 25th Hour
 by Mike Imboden

  "25th Hour" - M!ke Imboden

Well, after an unplanned hiatus I have returned, (Actually, I've been
back for a week or so now but have finally gotten caught up to the
point where I can sit and write something). Our BBS machine decided
that it was going to die with no warning and we weren't able to get
the parts needed to rebuild it for a couple weeks.

What did I do in my "time off"? Not much. I actually managed to read
a few comics - getting caught up on most of the "bigger" titles.
Captain America and a few others, (JLA, etc) are left to catch up on,
though. I suppose the "neatest" thing I did was build a computer from
just the parts. I'd never done more than install a piece of hardware
like a new drive or soundcard so I was quite intimidated by staring
at a motherboard OUTSIDE of the case. Well, I only blew one fuse in
the house, that coming on my first attempt at hooking up the power
supply. Attached the connectors, pushed the power button and FAVAMP -
all the lights in the house went black. After that it was smooth
sailing. Surprisingly I managed to get the darn thing together and
running by the next afternoon. It would have been sooner but I didn't
know I was short one power connector for the floppy drive which I had
to rush out and buy when morning came. I still don't claim to be a
whiz at this thing, but I guess in a pinch I can muster the know-how
   to get something running.

So, onto things you care about...

What's up with the feedback? There is none! Are we that boring? Come
on folks, you write e-mail everyday. We have what, half a dozen
addresses you can reach us at? Hop to it, drop us a line and let us
know if you like what we're doing. Is there anything you want to see
more, (or less), of? Name it. We can't give you what you want to read
about unless you tell us what that is.

In other stuff... I didn't realize I was ripping off Tony Isabella's
CBG column until after I wrote mine last time. I was behind on my
CBGs and didn't notice his take on the lack of real HEROES until
after I was moved to write about it in the wake of the Oklahoma
bombing. Tony says it all better than me, so I'll just nod my head,
point towards Medina, Ohio, and say "Yeah! What HE said!".

This just in from the "Mike is WAYYY Behind the Times" department...

Man, I just saw SPEED on HBO tonight... Geez-Louise, talk about a
nail biter! It's been awhile since I've been riveted to the screen
the way I was during this flick. Great stuff for you action fans out
there. The jumping bus bit was a tad over the "reality" line, but
hey, who's got the scorecard around here anyway? This was a great
movie and Dennis Hopper didn't disappoint in his role of the bad guy.
(although, IMO, his best "bad guy" role is, no, not King Koopa, the
dude in David Lynch's BLUE VELVET. Now THAT was a freaked out cat.)
Anyhow, if you're living a year behind everyone else like I am when
it comes to seeing movies, (actually, I call it smart. Ticket prices
these days makes it hard to see films in the theater, y'know?), try
and catch this. It's on tape and on HBO this month.

So, DC is "exclusive" with Diamond now. Well, this could be one of
the final nails in some retailer's coffin. If Diamond incorporates
DC's minimum, (whatever it is) into their own most should be ok.
However, if Diamond accounts will have to meet a DC minimum in their
overall Diamond total we could see the casualty figures begin rolling
in. Diamond's current minimum isn't hard to meet assuming you sell
enough DCs and other non-Marvel stuff, but taking another bite from
that Diamond figure could be REALLLL hard for some people to meet.
If you weren't scared when the Marvel deal went down, now's the time
   to start biting your nails.

Before I turn over the controls to everyone else I wanted to get a
plug in here. Now, I don't know the guy, have no financial interest
in his work and am getting nothing for this. Solicited in this
month's Previews is a little book called FATHER AND SON. It's written
and drawn by a guy named Jeff Nicholson. Many of you may not know who
he is, which explains why his other work never sold by the
gazillions. But his stuff is good. It's black and white and he has a
nice style to his cartooning. His writing is fantastic stuff. I
strongly urge you to pre-order this book from whoever you get it
from. IN fact, ask your retailer about getting some of Nicholson's
other work, THROUGH THE HABITRAILS (a tpb) and back issues of ULTRA
KLUTZ, a very clever parody of Ultra Man. Jeff's also done some
strips which are collected in NICHOLSON'S SMALL PRESS TIRADE,
(another trade paperback). He also did four issues of a GREAT book
called LOST LAUGHTER which was a sequel of sorts to his ULTRA KLUTZ
title. It was cancelled by Jeff, however, when he saw that close to
no one was buying it. Don't make the same mistake twice! Losing Jeff
to a "real" job would be shame. IN fact, I'll go so far as to make
the following offer; If you want a copy of the first issue, (listing
at $2.75), I'll send you one for a paltry buck-fifty which includes
shipping. Yep. $1.50 for a comic. (Novel idea, huh?). If you want to
read what I believe will be a great book, send a $1.50 to

Make a check or money order payable to Mike Imboden and get it in to
me by May 17th, (that's about a week and a half from when you'll read
   this).

There's no guarantee you'll like it, I know I will, but you will be
getting it cheap. What better way to sample something? (Free? yeah,
   there IS that I guess).

   Until next time, I remain,

forwarded to him).

Cartoon Books Goes To Image!:
[Source: Gary Groth]

5/5/95 - Image Comics announced today that Cartoon Books, founded by BONE
creator Jeff Smith in 1991, will become the newest addition to the Image
comics publishing family.

"The comic book industry is a very different world than it was a year ago,"
says Smith, "and I want to make sure that readers will still be able to get
our books. In fact, with Image's marketing power behind us, BONE will be
far easier to find than ever before."

Smith assures his readers that BONE will not change. Smith will retain
complete autonomy over his creation and it will continue to be black & white
and bi-monthly. The storyline will be uninterrupted by the move.

Previous issue of Bone, beginning with Bone #1, will be released on a
monthly basis simultaneously with current issues, and will be the final
reprintings of any Bone issue in Comic Book form. The reprints will sport

Diamond Comics Distribution Update:
[Source: Chris Cade]

5/6/95 - Diamond Comic Distributors, with all the changes going on in the
industry, have decided to set down a statement of principals & fundamentals
that retailors can count on:

"1) Straight talk. No B.S.
"2) Diamond will not use the changes Marvel set in motion as an
opportunity to take discount away from retailers. We will do our best to
maintain the overall pricing we offer.
"3) Diamond will remain receptive - and responsive - to retailer feedback.
We will also advocate on your behalf with all of our suppliers.
"4) Diamond is pro-diversity. We will do our best to preserve open access
to the marketplace for all quality creators and suppliers, so that
retailers and consumers can choose for themselves from the widest possible
variety of products.
"5) Diamond will build on the investments we've made over the years in
distribution and information management systems to deliver service and
support which are state-of-the-art by any industry's standards.
"6) Diamond will never become complacent about quality control or
customer service. We will always strive for perfection.
"7) Diamond will always treat comic retailers with respect. Others may
think you depend on them. We know we depend on you, and we will
always do our best to help your business grow and prosper."

To set up a new account with Diamond Distributors, call 1 800 362-6421 or
410 560-7100 from outside US & Canada between 9am & 9pm. Their fax # is 410
560-7148.

Special Retailor Meetings on The New Dynamics will be held between 10am and
3pm in the following cities:

(Call the above telephone # for updates, the following schedule is
TENTATIVE.)

May 30: Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Tampa
May 31: New Haven
June 1: Dallas, Minneapolis, Miami, New York, St. Louis, Winnipeg
June 2: Atlanta, Boston, New Orleans, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto

June 4: Charlotte, Houston, London, Los Angeles, Montreal, Portland
June 5: Columbus, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, Vancouver
June 6: Denver, Edmonton
June 7: Amsterdam, Honolulu

Other important updates:

* Diamond will not sell DC Comics or other products to other North American
distributors. They will sell to qualified sub-distributors outside of US and
Canada.
* The New Dynamics Meetings will be open to comic book retailers, suppliers,
creators and press, but not other distributors or readers and fans.

And now for a quick DC/Diamond FAQ:

Q: How is the DC/Diamond relationship different from any other
publisher/distributor relationship?

A: Diamond will continue to handle traditional distribution functions. They
will solicit orders, process orders, pull, package and ship orders, invoice,
and will handle credit and collections. They will no longer, however,
purchase DC product for resale. Instead, the transaction will be between DC
and the retailers. DC will set their own prices & terms, and Diamond will
act as their exclusive sales representative.

Diamond will remain an independent company completely owned, operated and
controlled by Steve Geppi. They will run their business according to the
needs of their customers and offer products from many suppliers, not just
DC.

Q: What's the point of this?

A: While the Marvel/Heroes' World deal limits retailers to Marvel product,
this relationship will distribute DC product reliably & efficiently while
allowing the retailers to order other products.

Q: Are there any other publishers that Diamond will enter into a similar
relationship with?

A: According to Chuck Parker, Diamond Executive Vice Prez and CEO, that
remains to be seen. They are continuing talks with their other suppliers
about their business relationship.

Q: How will this deal affect retailers' discounts on DC products?

A: "We want to allow retailers to maintain (or improve) their current
discount levels on DC product," says Bob Wayne, DC Director/Direct Market
Sales. May orders for July shipping products will be discounted in the same
way that the April orders for June shipping were.

Q: How will it affect discounts on NON-DC products?

A: For CURRENT CUSTOMERS, in May orders for July product, Diamond will give
customers the same discounts they would've qualified for in April, despite
the absence of Marvel Comics. For NEW CUSTOMERS, Diamond will match the
maximum discount they recieved from the distributor they bought from in
April. The retailer must forward a copy of an April invoice from that
distributor when they send in their Diamond Account Application.

Diamond will implement new discount plateaus after May, which will take into
account the absence of Marvel comics and other factors. Diamond has stated
that they are committed to significant new savings for retailers on trading
cards and toys.

Q: How will retailers benefit from DC & Diamond's new exclusive
relationship?

A: The relationship will quickly improve the availability of reorders. All
DC extras and backlist will be in Diamond's hands for immediate
distribution. The quality and distribution of promotional materials,
procedures for returns and the retailers' ability to adjust orders (up or
down) after the order due date, will be improved.

Q: Will DC continue its coop advertising program?

A: Yes. Additional programs and services that haven't been practical while
working with multiple distributors will be implemented.

Big Changes Phase Two: In a move that's going to be more significant for
comic shop owners than comic book fans, DC Comics has signed an exclusive
distribution arrangement with Diamond Distributors, who will now act as
DC's distribution agent; this seems to indicate that the folks at your
friendly local comic book shop will only be able to get their DC's through
this exclusive distributor.

DC is absolutely confident that this new system will not create any delays

Suspended Animation - by Michael Vance

"Harlan Ellison's Dream Corridor Special"
58 pages, $4.95 from Dark Horse.
Comic/words: Harlan Ellison; various artists.

If the size and shape of this perspective strikes you as bizarre, well
that's Harlan Ellison's game. He has made that crystal clear in his life
and writing. It has made Ellison a world famous author.
Hosted by Ellison caricatured, five of his short stories are adapted
into comics in "Dream Corridor". His introductions often reveal as much
about the writer as do his stories.
Down these uneven corridors:

        * A hunted despot flees into the era of dinosaurs.
        * A sheriff needs protection from what he protects.
        * An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, and a rat for a rat
          smell of vengeance.
        * A genetically engineered dog is a lizard.
        * A sleeping giant gathers much more than moss.

One of these corridors is a dead end. Admitting that "If This Be Utopia"
was a one-punch short story written in his early 20's, Harlan believes
its adaption is "genuinely funny". It isn't. Despite nice art, he should
have let this sleeping dog/lizard lie.
One hall leads to Prometheus buried under petunias, and a powerful,
moving question that man cannot let lie. "On the Slab", with the best
art and most thought provoking story, almost makes "Dream Corridors" a
must read.
To be even a lesser door in Harlan's house of stories is to read better
than most of what is written in comics, and the remaining adaptions fall
into this category. Of these, "The End of the Time of Leinard" (that
Western) is most interesting and "Rat Hater" most hackneyed.
What, gasps a hardened Harlan fan. Harlan hackneyed?
Much in his favor, none of these are rooms without a viewpoint. All lead
back to Ellison, whose beliefs and personality are indelibly impressed
into everything he has written -- the hallmark of real literature.
Recommended for Adults.
MINIVIEW: "Stormquest" #5. New (artists and writers) and improved
justice in time. Superheroes.
